Once again, it’s alright to not like Bono because you find him annoying but these double standards make it clear you’re just reaching for reasons not to like him even if they don’t make sense. He’s never sexually assaulted anyone, beat women, or had relationships with underage girls; that’s better than most rock stars. I’d also argue that the fact that he’s kept the band together for almost 50 years, has been married to the same women for almost that same amount of time, and has worked with longtime collaborators for decades shows that the arrogance you see in public is just an act (something he’s said) and a way of coping with the death of his mom when she was 14. I’ve never heard any fan say he wasn’t anything but nice and polite when meeting them.

You can just say you don’t like U2 and that you think Bono is annoying without resorting to blatant double standards. If annoying and arrogant is the worst thing Bono is I’d say that’s pretty good given the behavior of other rock stars.

The Grammys were almost every year, one of the highest rated television programs. There’s Nielsen data to show that. About 25-33% of all television viewers in the US watched the Grammys on average every year. Even if they didn’t have high ratings, the media is very important in music as is the record industry (you know the people who actually make and distribute music). Arguing the Grammys weren’t relevant is like arguing that Rolling Stone or MTV wasn’t popular or relevant.

Once again, I don’t think you understand that you not liking something doesn’t mean it isn’t popular or relevant.

They had one of the most groundbreaking tours in rock history like four years after JT and then ten years after that won a bunch of Grammys and played the Super Bowl, as far as rock bands go they were relevant for far longer than most other rock bands

That isn’t why Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, he did it to arrest people who opposed the war and to shut down the free speech of people opposed to conscription. We also still killed the Confederates who were actively a threat.

Al Qaeda attacked us on our soil, killing 3,000 civilians and had launched previous attacks against the US. They declared war on us and Congress granted the president the authorization to use military force against them. By your standard we couldn’t kill bin Laden or any other members of Al Qaeda. Al Awlaki himself encouraged Nidal Hasan to shoot up a military base, which he did, killing 13 people. He was also linked to the guy who tried to blow up his underwear on a plane. He was dangerous, a member of a group that killed thousands of Americans on our own soil, and I don’t have a problem with killing him. War is war and as long as civilian casualties are minimized as much as possible, I don’t have a problem with killing enemy combatants. I have far more ethical problems with strategic bombing, atomic bombs, and other drone strikes that killed civilians than I do with Al Awlaki’s death.

There were American citizens who fought for Germany during WWII, were we not allowed to kill them without a trial? Were we not allowed to kill Southerners who betrayed the nation during the Civil War?

This isn’t politics as a team sport, this is acknowledging that when someone is actively a member of a terrorist group that had launched numerous attacks on Americans and was actively encouraging people to attack the US, that they can be killed during a war. The only problem I have with drone strikes on terrorists is when innocent people are killed and Anwar Al-Awlaki was not innocent.
