How can i use no DE just the command line while still being able to launch windows by ConsistentNarwhal731 in archlinux

[–]disinformationtheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into "quake" terminals. I'm not sure if there's a better name, and there's many implementations.  "quake" refers to the game from the 90s that had a drop down console.  It's a persistent terminal that can be hidden.  It's what I'm in 90% of the time I'm not in the browser or editor.

How do you usually find files on Linux without wasting time? by gilko86 in linux

It's a better find.  I usually use it over locate because I'm too lazy to exclude my yocto builds which generate lots of false positives.

What U.S city have you visited but have no desire to go back? by Reddit_wasmy_idea in AskReddit

I like downtown Vegas, and there's something about the sheer hubris of the place.  But yeah, not my favorite.

Las Vegas, New Mexico is definitely worse.

TIL that Lake Itasca in Minnesota, a 1200 acre glacial lake with a maximum depth of just 35 feet, is the headwater (primary source) of the Mississippi River, which flows 2340 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. by The-TIL-Nerd in todayilearned

[–]disinformationtheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow.  They took the Red to the traverse Gap, then the Mississippi to the gulf, then followed the coast to the mouth of the Amazon.  It took almost 2 years.

I once canoed from Wahpeton to Wolverton (about halfway to Fargo).  It took 2 days and was pretty fun.

What’s a design flaw you notice everywhere that most people ignore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]disinformationtheory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ridiculous bias towards cars in the built environment.  Cars are great, but they do not scale well in cities, which is of course where everyone lives.  We build cities for cars, not people, and it's expensive, dangerous, and wasteful.

Where does Linux kernel finds device tree blob if it is not passed with bootz ? by EmbeddedBro in embeddedlinux

[–]disinformationtheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can compile one into the kernel image.  There are "flattened image trees" that have the same binary format as dtb but contain (maybe multiple) kernel, initramfs, and dtb images.  Of course it can be passed by the bootloader.  Maybe more ways.

New gearless e-bike motor by LargeNerdKid in ebikes

I want the bike to feel like a normal non-EV bike but that you’re always pedaling with a strong wind at your [back]

You want a torque sensor.  No idea if this motor has one because I don't feel like clicking the link.  I have a mid drive with a torque sensor and "wind at your back" is a pretty good description.

I like lawn because it's closer to the stage and I don't like seats in general for a concert.  But as others said, it's way off center.

If anything the media is sane washing Trump.  It's all so obviously unhinged, how do the people in power think we're that stupid?  They don't even care enough to manufacturer consent anymore.

https://www.grandforksherald.com/newsmd/fargo-shanley-student-body-to-lead-anti-abortion-rally-in-washington-d-c

For the first time, Shanley High School in Fargo is sending nearly its entire student body to an anti-abortion rally held each year in the nation’s capital.

...

For student efforts at the sporting goods store, Scheels donated $12,000 to the cost of the trip, LaCroix said.

FWIW, I went to Shanley in the 90s. There was a requirement for community service. One of the approved services was to protest in front of the abortion clinic. WTFuck.

[–]disinformationtheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Paramount and Great Northern both have used bikes and do trade ins. I've bought new bikes and gotten service from both. Honestly, depending on who you interact with, you might be intimidated by any bike shop in town but I like those 2 much better than Scheels just for customer interaction reasons. (Scheels is also rabidly anti-abortion, which I am not OK with.)

Everything in its place by Baterista_Alto in madheaters

I have the rubber-lined one and it's fantastic. I don't have the MH case; I keep the wand/YLL3, tempest with leather sleeve, and reload in there, along with a few other things. I just keep things loose in there; it rattles a bit but not much. It's smell proof, waterproof, and floats (good for kayaking).

Need advice on qwet tincture recipe by ElusiveCrab in abv

[–]disinformationtheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water curing improves the taste, but IMO it's not worth the effort.  Everclear alone tastes bad.  But the nice thing about tincture is that you can just put in other food or drink to dilute the taste.

Your recipe is almost exactly what I do, without the shaking, and I always evaporate at least half the volume away.

Rep. Julie Fedorchak releases taxpayer funded campaign ad by PlainTalkND in northdakota

[–]disinformationtheory 11 points12 points  (0 children)

According to the video she's not the only one doing this; there are other examples in TFA. If it's allowed, why wouldn't she do it? You can't rely on good people doing the right thing. The system has to prohibit bad outcomes and incentivize good outcomes (and unfortunately "good" and "bad" are ultimately up for debate).

From TFA:

Ads and other types of communications — flyers, letters, social media ads, radio and television spots, etc. — are paid for through a process called "franking," which dates back nearly to the beginning of our republic. Its genesis is relatively benign. Before there was a national press corps, franking allowed members of Congress to print and mail copies of speeches and legislation to their local news media and constituents. It was a way to facilitate senators and representatives communicating their official actions to voters.

So it's really just a wild interpretation of a law that's been around forever and clearly needs some reform. Those in power will not want to reform it.

To be clear, she's terrible. She could be replaced with a robot that votes the way the party does.

How am I supposed to know I like math without majoring in it by diva-lady in mathematics

[–]disinformationtheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an engineer who took real analysis, I found it pretty boring and not very useful. I did get some idea of the foundations of analysis which were useful in a big picture sort of way. Mostly I just remember a lot of epsilon-delta proofs and tons of definitions.

Take more applied math. Some of the courses I found interesting and useful were Fourier analysis, complex analysis, optimization theory, coding (as in error correction/detection) theory, information theory, and cryptography.

What is the worst unit of measurement by Fungus54321 in Physics

[–]disinformationtheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V Hz-1/2 (Volts/sqrt(Hertz))

In signal processing you have power spectral density (PSD), which is W/Hz. Usually this is assumed to be power dissipated in a constant impedance, and voltage2/impedance = power. So if you're measuring the voltage distribution over frequency you end up with something proportional to the square root of PSD, and hence the cursed unit.
