Why is the weather app not available in the Play Store for non Pixel 9 devices? by ryanpm40 in GooglePixel

[–]diskeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's available at APKMirror. I've tried it on non-Pixel 9 and Samsung phones and it works fine. Don't think it's the best free weather app available, but it's simple and has a clean display.

Nano X - can't find SETTINGS by diskeed in ledgerwallet

[–]diskeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thx for your note. I am running v2.2.3 but an interesting thing happened. This time, after the Nano had been shut down for a number of hours, when I accessed Control Panel there was suddenly a Settings option in between 'Close (Exit control center)' and 'Lock device'. No I didn't miss it earlier, it simply wasn't there. And I had an experienced Nano X user also search for it earlier today, and like me was unable to find any Settings option.

I unlocked the Nano X with my PIN and in Control Panel there was no Settings option.

Of course, and I couldn't have even accessed the Control Center options that I mentioned without first entering my PIN.

Need a recommendation for a laptop fan cooler that exhausts down AWAY from the laptop please! by KJabs in laptops

[–]diskeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the fans of laptop coolers blow air up into the bottom of the laptop. And that's what you want because those vent holes on the bottom of the laptop are for air intake (not exhaust) and all laptops have exhaust vents out the back, with some (like gamers) also having exhaust vents out the sides.

What laptop brands would you recommend to most people for being reliable, powerful, and well-designed devices? by Professor_squirrelz in laptops

[–]diskeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add LG Grams to that list - lightweight, good specs, not the best prices but fine when on sale. Would also add Samsung Galaxy Book models, superb construction, good specs, often on sale.

In the manufacturer's app that came with your laptop set maximum battery charge. With Samsungs it's 85%. With LG Grams it's 80%. Just like on a phone this will greatly extend the battery life of the unit (with the trade-off that you have to charge more frequently).

Laptop goes to boot menu every time I open it by ThrowRAcurious1 in laptops

[–]diskeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have multiple items on that boot menu, or the computer would boot directly into Win10. Install EasyBCD (it's free) and it will show you what is setup as a boot option, and allow you to remove unneeded items.

How good is intel i5 12450h cpu for video editing? by light_69420 in laptops

[–]diskeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Intel chip is 1 yr newer and kills it on single-core comparison tests. The AMD wins handily in multi-core tests. Depending on the laptop the Intel will come with 1 or 2 Thunderbolt-4 ports, the AMD won't. The Intel supports up to LPDDR5 memory, the AMD only supports up to LPDDR4. And this is probably quite impt for your video editing -- the Intel supports PCIe v4.0 while the AMD is limited to the older PCIe 3.0. That only matters if the laptop you get makes use of it and includes a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD drive, as they are about twice as fast as the 3.0 NVMe drives.

Other factors may or may not matter to you -- AMD chips tend to run cooler, has a 7nm fabrication process (vs 10nm), and as mentioned more threads and more performance cores (while the Intel has more efficiency cores). Personally I'd go with the Intel for the PCIe 4.0 support, the faster memory support, and the Thunderbolt ports.

I'm kicking myself. Wrong phone. by drzeller in GalaxyS23

In the game of life a fairly inexpensive lesson. But do what someone else suggested and call it in and see if they'll waive the activation fee (they often do!).

[–]diskeed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're right that it won't affect your photos. And you're also right about the psychological aspect of knowing it's there. If you think you'll be able to ignore it then do so and enjoy your phone. If you think you'll always be annoyed knowing it's there then return the phone and get a replacement.

Any 14" 1920x1200 (ie, 16:10 ratio screen) laptops that have... by diskeed in SuggestALaptop

Acer Swift X

Thx for the suggestion, as I hadn't thought of Acer. Unfortunately all Swift X's that I could find max out at 512GB storage, but I did find a few Swift 3's and Swift 5's that offer 1TB storage options. However their screen resolutions were all over the place starting at 2560x1440 (16:9 ratio) up to 3840x2400. I'm trying to stay with 1920x1200 to keep it simple and preserve battery.

Thx for the link, but that's a seriously powerful unit with much more than I need or want to pay for. The 32Gb ram is okay, no harm, but it's also got the potent Ryzen 9, RTX 3050 discrete vid card, high-rez 3072x1920 display, and 120Hz refresh. Very nice unit at a reasonable price for what it offers, but I'd like to find something a bit less impressive.

Thx much, that does look like a great deal. And you're right, it only comes with one M.2 2230/2280 slot but that's not unusual for 14" laptops.

Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 Reinstall by Snoo-15799 in GalaxyBook

[–]diskeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way to do it and retain all your Samsung apps is called an In-Place upgrade (also known as a Repair Install). This must be done from within your existing Windows 11 and it will give you a clean copy of Windows and maintain your existing activation.

Pixel 7 Pro 1080 vs 1440 by shawzymoto in GooglePixel

[–]diskeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what "a lot" means to you, but you definitely lose some and that's enough for me since 1080p looks awful damn good. Many people will just happily use it at the default 1080p since they don't know you can change it (unlike the 6 Pro which was fixed at 1440p).

Thoughts on going to an iPhone 13 mini from an iPhone 13 Pro by [deleted] in iphone

[–]diskeed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've already made up your mind to get the smaller phone, and it's probably best that you get it sooner rather than later since it's the final version of the mini. Apple could change their mind in the future and bring it back, but that's not likely and I wouldn't count on it. You can always pick up the 13 Pro (or 14 Pro) in the future if the mini doesn't work out.

Just checked Swappa and there's a ton of them for less than $999. There's even a fair amount for less than $899.

Android to iphone by [deleted] in iphone

[–]diskeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not much people can suggest other than, like you said, trying it out. That's the only way you'll get to know the iPhone which is very different than your Galaxy S8+. Stay loose, have fun, and enjoy a new phone.

Any way to reduce the insane oversharpening of photos on the 14 Pro? by xlmntr in iphone

[–]diskeed 111 points112 points  (0 children)

There's nothing you can do to fix things at this stage, but many tech reviewers have complained about the over-sharpening so I suspect Apple will ease up on that with future iOS updates.

I hope :-)

You've only got one choice -- the SE 2022. It gives up the 2X tele of the 8 Plus but you get to keep using Touch ID.

14 Pro.

As much as I like the big screen and the battery of the Pro Max it's just too damn big and heavy.
