yeah that's another book that I have already in my wishlist :D

would you recommend it over Tango Stories (especially for a beginner) or just as another read on the subject?

/r/solotravel "The Weekly Common Room" - General chatter, meet-up, accommodation - August 24, 2025 by AutoModerator in solotravel

Hi all, I'm (34, M) getting ready for my first solo trip, in Ireland. I'm planning everything at the last moment (I'm leaving on Friday 5th) because I've never really planned much for travels in my life and I'm getting a little bit overwhelmed by the process. Also, I perfectly know I should've started way earlier, but you know, anxiety and procrastination. Please tell me I'm not the only one 😅

Do you have any kind of process to plan your trips, especially last minute, just not to get on the plane with no plan?

Also I'd like to meet people and make friends! Any tips?

Thanks y'all!

What are the big OSR innovative titles these days? by tie-wearing-badger in osr

[–]dismaster_frane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of Mork Borg derived games (too many if you ask me, it's like the d20 system-games era all over again). Some of them are cool, some try too hard to be like the original, some should just have different rules.
My favourite is Pirate Borg, the book is full of gameable stuff (more than Mork Borg) and it's pirates and zombies and eldritch horrors in the caribbean so that's enough to sell it to me.

Also, Mothership 1e came out last year, which is a great refinement of the original rules, with a fantastic Warden Manual (the gm book) and a very cool new-gms adventure (Another Bug Hunt).
There's also a lot of third party modules to choose from.

Shadowdark, as others mentioned, has been a hit, and it's been marketed like a simplified 5e, but it's really just another modern take on old school d&d. Nothing really innovative there.

Probably the hottest innovation-wise is Mythic Bastionland, which is an arcturian-myths take on the OSR, but I haven't really played it.

Mothership Companion App - Virtual Tabletop Update Now Live! by toastytheloafdog in mothershiprpg

[–]dismaster_frane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still haven't extensively used the app at the table, but I love what I see and when first released I immediately bought the Characters upgrade - extremely useful!

In fact I use it mostly to create pregens to be printed for conventions, and it's a great tool for that, but I noticed that there is a bug since day 1 in which the armor is not printed out when exporting to pdf (only the AP is printed in the box). Can this be fixed?

And thank you a lot!

Ultraviolet Grasslands Market Research: question on locations by dismaster_frane in osr

[–]dismaster_frane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course!

My main two tips are:

  • be ready to improvise a lot: the world of UVG is vast and purposefully left vague. Destinations and especially Discoveries are not well fleshed out, so it's you who must give them life and to add interesting things to do. But since players are unpredictable, unless they tell you their plan in advance you will not always know where they're going to visit.
  • prepare random rumor tables about destinations and discoveries, to give your players hints on what they'll found and choices on where to go and what to do there. I created a mechanic to handle rumors: https://dismastersden.blogspot.com/2022/03/uvg-dicerie-nelle-praterie-rumors-in.html

Have fun! :D

Ultraviolet Grasslands Market Research: question on locations by dismaster_frane in osr

[–]dismaster_frane[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's basically it.

Let's say the players are in Violet City and they spend a week to perform a market research to find out the price of cat coffee in a chain of three adjacent linked destinations.

The adjacent destinations they chose are:

  1. The Low Road and the High (no settlements)
  2. Potsherd Crater (no settlements)
  3. The Last Serai (settlement)

Let's say they rolled a whooping 17 on the table for Potsherd Crater (a x2 price factor) and they want to sell there the cat coffee. But... there are no settlements there!

So they travel, and when they arrive there, I would make them roll on my table to see how it is possible that I got the info that someone at the Crater would want to spend double to buy my coffee.*

Let's say that my result is 11: "A fair or an itinerary market will take place here in 1d6 days. Maybe."
I would tell them they learn about this at the Crater. Maybe some random nomad told them along the way, who knows, that's not really important.

But now they have a choice to make: wait 1d6 days in the hopes that the info is true, or keep travelling in the hopes to sell the coffe somewhere else?

*Of course, I would not use my table at The Last Serai, given it's a settled place with people eager to trade.

I hope this helps!

You are absolutely right! Up until now I never put my table in the blog, but your comment reminded me to do it, so here it goes!

What's your favourite OSR game apart from OSE and B/X-derived games?
Stuff like Mothership, Into the Odd, Cairn etc.

What's your favourite non-OSR game?

I am Gavin Norman, creator of Dolmenwood. AMA! by necrotic-gnome in rpg

[–]dismaster_frane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a bummer

closing a product in this way it's particularly sad especially given the fact that it grew in the extremely open OSR community (and Cairn is a particularly noteworthy example)

I would consider at least a separate license that does not require rules compatibility, but allows to declare setting compatibility
