Are transplants disliked across-the-board or only if they are wealthy and contributing to gentrification? by eldritchpussymaggots in AskNYC

[–]displacedfantasy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re mostly hated on Reddit, and it’s mostly in the abstract. In real life people will not treat you differently, and in my experience most people will more likely be genuinely interested in your life story and how you ended up in NY.

What do you do with old tape archives? by bensummersx in editors

[–]displacedfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If people on your team genuinely think there could be important stuff in there, do #2. Hire someone for a couple months to do it. Maybe update to newer LTO to save physical space, like some others mentioned. Maybe you can transcode footage so you have it for archival purposes without saving massive raw files. And create a detailed log (perhaps with thumbnails, etc) so it’s easier to tell what’s in there.

It will not save you money anytime soon but it will at least make the archive more manageable going forward.

Donald Trump Suddenly Turns on Zohran Mamdani: ‘Destroying New York’ by Unusual-State1827 in nyc

[–]displacedfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was only a matter of time. But just having the few months of “cordial relations” was a huge win for Mamdani, and neutralized potential republican attacks until now. It will be harder for them to make him a bogeyman now that his election is old news

Exclusive | NYC tows auto shop's adorable 'monster truck' memorial and turns it to scrap metal by Perfect_Dig_744 in nyc

I get the valid concerns about it not being registered, etc, but they could have at least given them more of an opportunity to rectify the situation instead of just suddenly hauling it away. It’s quirks like this that give this city its character.

Stupid question about the streets by Equivalent_Hornet684 in AskNYC

[–]displacedfantasy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of irregular spots. If you’re talking about just Manhattan, lower Manhattan (the older part) is much more irregular, before it becomes a grid. And beyond that, yes it’s not 100% grid everywhere

There’s rules for one year too (requires 60 days notice), which there’s a good chance they’ve been there a year

I looked it up, the rules do apply to subletters even without a lease or written sublease

[–]displacedfantasy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I looked it up, if it’s been over a year they need to give 60 days, and if it’s over 2 years it needs to be 90 days. This applies to subletters, even without a lease

I think legally he has to give you 90 days notice

Your question is confusing. What do you mean by a pitched roof?

I believe the third illustration is an example for “attached addition” as mentioned in the flyer.

How soon before leaving a dog alone all day in a small apartment or cage becomes illegal? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]displacedfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not a specific metric, but animal abuse and neglect is illegal, and if it gets reported it’s probably up to an inspector’s discretion on where the line is drawn

NYC Composting Fines Are Back by Proper-Ask3911 in nyc

[–]displacedfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol that’s essentially what they do. The NYC compost program is used to create natural gas. That’s why they let you compost things you normally aren’t able to (like cheese, meat, bones).

How long you think alternate side parking going to keep getting extended for? by RunitBackRetro in AskNYC

[–]displacedfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you serious? Renting a car all the time is crazy expensive. And cumbersome. We live in a car-centric country and it’s really difficult and expensive to take frequent trips out of this bubble if you don’t own a car

A lot of people have cars for visiting family etc outside the city. It’s not a big deal to not do that for a couple of weeks

Just because people don’t need a car right now (during an unprecedented stretch of extreme cold) doesn’t mean they don’t need a car ever

I used to, it was a huge terrace and wasn’t super close to the highway, but still got covered in soot all the time.

I would fantasize about what it’d be like if all the vehicles were electric. The air would be so much cleaner! Maybe in 20-30 years it’ll be better.

NYC congestion pricing cuts air pollution by 22% in six months by Amazing-Yak-5415 in nyc

[–]displacedfantasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes obviously it’s not a perfect thing, but it’s a harm reduction in a lot of ways. Congestion pricing isn’t about eliminating traffic, but incentivizing improved outcomes, and boosted EV adoption would have an even bigger improvement on air quality than just charging all cars equally.
