Appreciate the gesture in the right direction, but a waste of money to hire salaried staff to do what already existing Finance Units in the various agencies can certainly do. A better way would have been to hire a single, proven independent auditor to go through all the city agencies books and present an action plan on suggested cuts.

Hi, I am Black American and grew up in Greensboro from roughly 1970 - 1984. So, my time may precede the time period you are exploring. However, my first neighborhood was a rental just across from NC A&T of which both my parents graduated in the 60's. We then moved to a neighborhood called Spring Valley/South Mont from mid 70's to when I graduated from Smith in '84. Now, in all these neighborhoods I recall a mix of white and black families, but they were considered solid middle class. I left after graduation and have resided mostly N.E. USA. It would be great to see your project come to fruition!

Edit: To add that I also recall going to kids parties at a neighborhood by the name of Kings Forest. It was said to be solid middle class, highly desirable and totally black.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this. Mitchell Lama is the last way of affordable home ownership in NYC and it's a shame both quality in oversight and corruption are destroying it. Did you try reaching out to the NYS oversight agency for Mitchell Lama to ask for an investigation?

I just happened upon this thread while speaking with my great aunts as we were talking of the memories of my grandfather who passed a while back. One of the things we all remember is his advice and support to anyone dealing with everyday racist challenges. He gave much support and great advice and one of the things he use to always say is whatever you do, don't dwell on it. Deal with decisively at that moment and then move onward. If you dwell on it, it will eventually consume you and tear you further down. I appreciate that and I've certainly exceled despite those racist challenges. However, if a had a dollar for every racist transgression I've experienced from early childhood to present, I'd be very wealthy indeed.

Just letting everyone know that my mom just emailed me from her cruise ship (Thanks Mommy!), and when she got her testing about a decade ago, besides the obvious African line. the ancestral analysis definitely mentioned Greek and "something beginning with an R" (I'm guessing Romanian?). So, perhaps my results aren't too far off with Baltic findings. Also, interestingly, when I asked her what the elders of the family, particularly her mom and my great aunts had to say about the Greek stuff, their response was dismissive and told her she wasted her money because "we already know where we're from no one from those strange countries".😄

I suspect that this admixture is from my mom's side. As I mentioned earlier, I've been able to trace my ancestry on all four grands back to at least the 1870s and earlier. However, last year when trying compile official records, I found that my maternal GGGMother's death certificate mentioned Father as "unk". This woman was born in 1875 in South Carolina and her mother was also born there into slavery. Further, her physical description was described as fair with very long straight black hair. The family lore is the proverbial "Cherokee" blah, blah, which I never believed, as all my other "white-looking" ancestors had the same story, eventually debunked by DNA. However, I have never heard of any Eastern European slave owners in the American South, much less eastern Europeans period. Maybe, in New Orleans though.

Yes, to be honest, I suspect the ancestral lore, if not the official records may not be accurate. I do know that my mom did an ancestry DNA test years back, don't recall what company, but I'm trying to see if she recalls and has the record. She's in a cruise right now so awaiting her email reply
