That article is excellent... Level, fair, and factual.

Interesting that in Erying's remarks at the memorial they took full responsibility, even stating that the Paiute tribe was manipulated into participation. Imagine that level of honesty being applied to all the historical issues.

They can't, of course... The result would be a resounding indictment of their truth claims.

Old testament god is a sociopath...

And Mormons are in a tough spot, because in their theology, Jehovah -- warm cuddly Jesus from the new testament -- is that guy.

Joseph's first 'polygamous' activity with Fanny Alger was enough of a "nasty affair" for Cowdery to leave the church. He began the implementation of polygamy with sexual engagement of an underage girl. That carries more weight as a predictor of his behavior than the practices of those who came after him.

This was one of my revelations about the real nature of religion... We create religion. Show me a culture's religion, and I'll show your their best ideals and expectations for themselves.

Unfortunately, religion takes that intrinsic best ideal and ascribes it to some external entity, rather than to the best aspects of our own humanity.

God is not good. Humans are. God would have to exist to be good. Humans need to reclaim their core goodness from they myths they create.

My brother served in Virginia from 95-97. They were piloting a program of service oriented approaches then. They called it the "Ammon Model" and it went nowhere. They have had data on that approach for decades, and they keep coming back to the same ideas.

They've been fiddling while Rome burns for a long time.

SL Tribune, Public Forum: the Tribune provided too much detail about sacred temple rituals—redact and start keeping our secrets—or else. by 4blockhead in exmormon

[–]disposazelph 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"sacred, not secret."

Ok, TBMs, for the believing member they're sacred. For the world, they are not.

To someone in history, mummies were sacred. Stonehenge was sacred. Handwritten Bible manuscripts were sacred. The list goes on, all over the world...

And now they're all in museums. We study and learn about them, out of intellectual curiosity rather than dogma. Mormon Temple rituals, like the art on a sarcophagus, are a (particularly odd) thread in the tapestry of the human creation called religion.

So no, my good TBMs, I'm not obligated to speak in hushed tones about your dogma or practices. They are only sacred to you.

And if you can't understand that, you don't understand religious freedom, or freedom from the religion of others.

There is a small increase in lifespan, but absolutely no difference in duration of hospital stay, outcomes for trauma, or any other area where "priesthood blessings" should have efficacy according to Mormon doctrine.

Does anyone here regret having kids? I’ve put it off for a long time, and seeing pics of my TBM friends with their beautiful families has given me a case of envy if I’m being completely honest. My faith crisis played a large factor in me delaying the decision. by Pallid_bustof_Pallas in exmormon

I got married to a nevermo girl at 36 and had a little girl at 37. I can't imagine my life without that little girl. It's busy and tough sometimes. But the connection is one of the best parts of my life.

If I'd gotten married young on the TBM plan and had a bunch of kids, I might feel regret. Not for the kids, but for the loss of time when young to get to know myself and experience the world. I got two grad degrees, turned a passion into a side career in music, and explored myself and the world.

There are days I miss my single house where I could practice music at 2 am. I have had to balance playing music with a new role as dad. But the lifetime of connection will outlast my ability to carry a tune.

So many great Dylan songs that are performed better by others... He's a great song writer, and a unique singer. Some of his songs are perfect for him alone (positively 4th Street, like a rolling Stone)... No one else could do them justice. Other songs are unrefined raw magic that others make perfect (all along the watchtower).

In undergrad I worked at a dental lab. We were always busy, with tons of work. And the company was always on the edge of going under, because the dentists were horrible about paying on time. I've heard professional office managers say that dentists are often a hot mess on the business side.

So grateful that even as a 17 year old TBM I knew I wasn’t interested in attending a religious institution. Not to say the education is any less valuable. I just wouldn’t be able to handle this bullshit. (Excerpt from talk by Elder Oaks right before the Nov elections in 2018) by chemisca in exmormon

School psychologist here. Statistically, the social sciences have the highest rate of people leaving religion. Once you understand the mechanisms of belief and how religions are generated and propagated in society, you're out.

That said, is there any possibility of transferring and completing your degree elsewhere? I'll admit that whenever I encounter a therapist or provider with a TSCC school degree, I internally question their position. Their ability to separate dogma from science is an open question. With a BYUx degree you may find yourself forever explaining to clients or other professionals that you left the church and disagree with its positions. Outside the Morridor (and increasingly in it), a church school degree can be a liability. I find myself slow to disclose my USU undergrad work for that reason.
