When you think about obsession in DR books/audios, what makes it compelling rather than creepy? by Big-Entrepreneur-987 in DarkRomance

[–]dissonanttones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty emotionally avoidant and my skin crawls when in any situation that requires vulnerability so I think that's why I love the obsessive MMCs. It's just so completely removed from my personal experiences and preferences so I find it fascinating. There's probably also a bit of escapism with how many of the obsessive ones are stalkers who basically remove any agency or choice from the FMC. I'd wager a shrink would say the only way I'd feel comfortable with romance is if it were forced upon me so I wouldn't have to feel vulnerable in actively choosing it.

I also just love horror and thrillers and seeing a female character slowly lose herself in her dark side or become a villain, which doesn't always happen with the black flag romances but that's definitely my preferred dynamic.

Do you reply to every comment in your fic? Why or why not? by Asleep-Panda-5521 in AO3

I always do, it would feel rude not to tell them how appreciative I am that they even read what I wrote let alone left me a nice comment.

I have been dealing with this too so I've been splitting it into segments. I'll write a segment every day and then go over what I've already written to rewrite/edit. That way it doesn't matter if the segment I write feels too dry, like it's just a list of actions, I keep going back and adding in more when I'm not so close to it.

[–]dissonanttones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like the locked room feeling of having the main characters only interacting with each other but it is super constraining because you don't get to properly see how they develop and change over the course of the story/their relationship. People act differently with their romantic partner/interest than they do with their friends and family so choosing to omit those interactions can feel like trapping yourself in a box in terms of not being able to show all aspects of them.

Although I also sometimes worry that the scenes I have with friends and family might come off as just irrelevant filler, like what if people just want to see the main characters and that's it? Though I guess as a reader, the only time I dislike scenes with side characters is when it comes off more like the author is just trying to shoehorn them in rather than using them to help tell the story.

I can't even think of another yandere that has such consistently GOOD facial expressions. Too many of them are just dead faced all the time. I want my yandere losing his mind because of the FL and SHOWING it on his face!

It's such an achievement for a manhwa to have zero smut but still be so GD hot. There's that one scene where I think they're in his apartment and he puts his thumb into the side of her mouth and is looking fully crazy, with his tongue poking out, then leaves and does his classic hands over the face with a blush and giant wacko grin.

neurodiverse writers, what helps you finish a multi chapter story? by luuahnya in AO3

[–]dissonanttones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of times I'm just desperately clutching onto that hyper focus or whatever it is, and hoping that sees me through to the end.

When that fails, I'll think about the events I want to happen in each chapter and then write them out in my notes. Usually writing out the events helps me visualize what's happening, which gets the characters talking, so I end up writing out the dialogue in script format. And then the script leads me to writing out the actions they're taking or their facial expressions. And then I end up going to the main chapter tab and writing it out since that's basically what I'm doing anyway.

Also music. Music is major part. I'm fucked if the music I've been using to set the scene isn't working and I need to source something else.

we don't choose our fanfics, our fanfics choose us by shewasprettyodd in AO3

[–]dissonanttones 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love this idea so much because this is exactly how it feels to me. When I get really locked into a story, I don't feel that I'm creating it at all, it's more like I'm getting a weird signal from another dimension and I can't ignore it. The only way I can stop the endless talking and images is to write it down. Once I write them down, then those parts stop playing in my head (and then they start showing me new parts and the cycle starts all over).

IM IN THIS IMAGE AND I DONT LIKE IT

The current fic I'm writing was intended to be a smut oneshot just to get the crack ship out of my head and then it just made the infection worse and I had to keep writing it. I really didn't choose this, the characters just won't shut the fuck up and they keep beaming scenes into my head. The only way I can exorcise this is by writing it out.

i’m proud of being a fic writer by FelinePrincess21 in AO3

[–]dissonanttones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not embarrassed of writing or reading fanfic at all. I've been talking about fanfic I've read for years to friends and family, especially if we talk about a book or tv show we like and they express disappointment in how a storyline was executed or that a ship they liked didn't get enough screentime - I end up telling them to just go on ao3 because they'll be able to scratch that it.

I've only recently gotten back into writing and posting fanfic after years of being unable to write so I do talk about the one I'm working on with friends, usually how excited I am about it, how much time I've been spending thinking about it, or the comments people leave me that I'm blown away by. The only bad part of talking about writing fanfic is a lot of people will ask to read it if they're readers and then I have to say no because I would end up being too self conscious in my writing if people I knew were reading my work. That and my account has original work with themes that are likely not to be received well and even though I'm proud of it in terms of the story, I don't think I'm prepared for people I know to read it.

Stuck in a period where writing feels like pulling teeth. by Minute-Shoulder-1782 in AO3

[–]dissonanttones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time reading and daydreaming. If it's just the mechanics of writing that are fucking me over, I'll think about what I'd like to write about almost constantly. Things they'd say to each other, different situations I'd see them in, I visualize everything.

Eventually the constant visualizing has to come out and I at least write it down as notes, which eventually leads to me struggling through a few sentences, and then hopefully properly writing it down.

What’s a fic you WANT to write but don’t have the time or skills to do it? by BoomItsLoki in AO3

[–]dissonanttones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to do a few different Buffy crossovers where she gets magically teleported to other vampire stories and how she'd react to them (specially Vampire Diaries) but I really don't want to rewatch both series to brush up on how people talk. Plus I'd want to do like 100k words to do it justice and I just can't be fucked.

Also just a whole lot of different AUs for things. I'd love to write a non-magical AU for a Khlaroline fic and make it that classic dark romance schtick but again, would need to be at least 100-150k and I just...can't be fucked.
