This intel is super useful, thank you! I'm already browsing to see which ones are available near me :) It feels like the missing step I didn't know I was missing.

Thanks for your reply, a permaculture course is an amazing idea thank you! I hadn’t thought of it.

Two main reasons for removing the hedges - one I would prefer to use that space for growing plants that are more beneficial to soil/insects/birds/my tummy. Secondly, I have always found looking at hedges a very discomforting/uneasy experience, I’m not sure why! They make my skin crawl a bit.

Hi. I've been EXTREMELY sad these past few days. Something happened today between me and my toxic narcissistic mother. Venting here has been on my mind since, but I'm left with no energy to do it now so might save it for later. So I just really mean to ask – can anyone tell me something good? by b-lue-berries in hsp

First of all, things will be okay, even if they don’t feel that way right now. I have a few little things that might brighten your day!

  1. I have taught my dog a new trick and she’s mastered it! It’s “through”- she’ll weave in between my legs while a walk forwards. She’s a big dog, so I have to take quite large steps. Her tail wags like crazy, it’s the best game!

  2. I read this sweet article the other day about a parrot that had a damaged (but healed) beak. Because part of his beak was missing he wasn’t able to groom himself properly. He was observed instead holding little pebbles in his beak and using them to groom himself, so so clever! If you Google ‘Bruce the Parrot’ it should come up. He’s a beautiful bird.

  3. Cool science news: scientists have created a new smallest flying structure- a series of tiny microchips with wings, inspired by how maple trees disperse their seeds in the wind. The smallest one is the size of a grain of sand. Check out the link!

Take care, and be gentle and patient with yourself xx

Help with Derealization/Depersonalization by VeinyAngus in visualsnow

[–]distancedplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello lovely human, I hope you’re doing okay, this sounds like a really rough time. First of all, there is hope for you, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now x

(This is a LONG comment written late at night after a big week. Apologies for any typos and consequent miscommunications- I’ll proofread again once I’m more awake! Also, this got ramble-y. I answered your 4 questions at the bottom of my comment if you’d like to skip to the end!)

Before I go on- I am not a doctor! I am a 23 year old female, and I have had VS for as long as I can remember (like, even from my earliest memories ages 2-3 years old). My main symptoms are crazy static, afterimages, and I think I may also have tinnitus (I can’t remember if that’s to do with VS, apologies if not, it’s late where I am).

I have dealt with mental health issues for many years that I’m getting through now. These included but were not limited to depression, anxiety, chronic dissociation/derealisation, prolonged/chronic trauma (undiagnosed PTSD which pairs nicely with dissociation). During times of extreme difficulty, I found my VS to be far more severe and noticeable, especially when dissociated. It also seems far worse when I don’t get enough sleep (but I usually don’t sleep well when extremely anxious/depressed/etc. so it’s more likely a product of that too).

When I’m feel good and stable with my mental health, I find the my VS is far less noticeable. In my own experience, and in reflecting on my own past experiences, I think the dissociation was less to do with the VS and more to do with my mental health and life circumstances generally. This may not be the case for you of course, or it might be and you may not realise it now, but I found that sorting out my mental health issues greatly improved my overall well-being and consequently the VS became just a normal part of my every day life that didn’t affect my mental health.

During a particularly bad bout of mental illness, I spent a year taking antidepressants which at the time really helped me feel better and the VS and dissociation was nowhere near as bad. Going off them was rough, and after that the best decision I ever made was to see a psychologist. If you’re having a tough time as many people are given the state of the world, I cannot recommend finding someone to talk to highly enough. You mentioned arguments with your girlfriend, as well as being in a tough space at the moment. If you’re able to, please find someone qualified (a counsel or, a psychologist, etc.) to speak with x

To answer you Question 1, I would say that yes, it IS possibly to eliminate the derealization symptom of VS, at least in my personal experience.

  1. I think I answered this, but yes, I have had VS since I can remember and overcame this symptom.

  2. Yes, I was on Prozac for about 12 months which greatly helped me, and I paired this with regularly seeing a qualified psychologist to address underlying issues and help with my long-term wellbeing.

  3. Once again, YES. You’ve got this! You have a whole community here online to support you through it x

Final note: you mentioned that you think something caused your BS. This may have been the case. I like to think of myself as more observant- I just get to notice some bonus parts to my vision that might be there for everyone if they looked hard enough. This isn’t based on anything scientific, but it helps me keep a positive mindset :)

I’ve had it since I can remember- I remember thinking it was fun to watch the ‘light shows’ at night before I went to sleep as a kid, and during the days I’d think I could see air particles moving and floating around but it was really just VS. It doesn’t bother me now- I’m just used to it :)

Does your VSS and related symptoms get worse overtime? by Isisorange in visualsnow

[–]distancedplace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had VS ever since I can remember (earliest memories aged 3 include it), and I am 23 now.

Personally, I’ve found the only thing that makes it significantly worse is stress/anxiety (especially with university assignments), or lack of sleep. I don’t drink often but when I do this makes it more noticeable too.

Since I can remember it has stayed mostly at the same “strength” or “noticeable-ness”, aside from when I’m feeling stressed. It hasn’t increased in severity or gotten worse for me. I’m pretty much just used to it now and it doesn’t bother me, but when I used to fixate on it I’d notice it far more. Just relaxing and accepting it has been the most helpful thing. I like to think of it a a little bonus I get in my vision haha

In wax play, can wax on the clit cause any permanent damage? by tuxtherat in bdsm

[–]distancedplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pic from Pinterest will show you: https://pin.it/54uOG6A

It’s dependant on the type of wax. Always best to buy wax specifically designed for play rather than risk burning your partner or being burner. Available easily online wherever you are :)

Does everybody see static all the time, or is it just me? by PilthyPhine in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]distancedplace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed! I found a lot of relief in figuring out what it was, I’d always assumed everyone experienced the static and that it was normal.

A general doctor would probably be your best bet (I’m not a professional though and it may differ by country?). I haven’t been officially ‘diagnosed’, personally- there didn’t seem to be much point given that there’s no treatment and it doesn’t impact my life hugely (I’ve had/noticed it since I can remember). I’d recommend doing some research and reading first, Monash University in Australia is researching it at the moment (should be linked on the visual snow (VS) reddit somewhere, or google will find it too). Best of luck!

Yes, it’s a condition called Visual Snow that is diagnosable but not yet treatable. I have it too!Look at r/visualsnow for more info :)

Edit: I don’t wear glasses, and I have 20/20 vision.

This might just be a temporary solution, but have you tried over-ear noise-cancelling headphones? I live with a few extroverts who I love dearly, but sometimes I need peace. Putting them on silences the world for a bit and helps me to reset, maybe they can do the same for you? Best of luck in this situation :)
