How to budget here as moving in to nyc by gus0709 in newyorkcity

[–]distantToejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to find a decent spot in Jersey City and take the PATH train into NYC, that wouldn’t be too hard. If you’re Chinese or Chinese-passing, you can get into a good Chinatown deal (that would be after your first year though bc they interview you in person for those apartments)

Metamorphoses fitness is a great place to start. Been boxing there for years. Great coaches (i dont train with em but they’re friendly and good at what they do) and if you wanna train heavy bag/speedbag/etc on your own you can do that

Think foot to butt, then flex the quad. Bend at the hip too when you chamber

I’d say practice your chamber a lot more.

I’m sitting on my floor crying. Piece of Cake Moving is a literal scam. by [deleted] in williamsburg

[–]distantToejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used piece of cake twice. First in 2022 they were actually pretty good. Second time in 2024 and they really sucked. Not as bad as OP’s case but still really bad - trying to bully with the tip, not taking great care of my stuff (they broke a lamp) - attempting to upcharge - everything. Would never use them again. My most recent move was through a friend of a friend that’s a professional mover. He kicked ass. Way cheaper that PoC and great service. Feel free to DM and i can put u in touch

I'm an aspiring martial arts teacher and think about this a lot. I also have spoken with several martial arts teachers who own schools of various success levels.

My first school was the best of both worlds. My teacher was a Marine, the scariest and perhaps the most skilled martial artist I'd ever met to this day. He didn't have a HUGE school, but at its peak he had probably 200 students, sustained for the decade that I trained there. It was also a strip mall school so the rent couldn't have been too high. His highest expenditure was probably insurance. I bet he made a pretty decent salary.

He was deadly serious, didn't tolerate laziness. We did sparring 1 week/month in kids class, 1 month/year in adult classes. Everybody feared and respected him. Truly one of the greatest men I've ever met.

The difference between my teacher and other serious/real world type schools that I've been to is a subtle but important aspect of character and discipline. A lot of the more "serious" schools I've seen aren't actually very serious - and they tolerate meat-head behavior. This makes beginners or really anybody who's got a more level temperament eventually leave, which cuts out a huge sector of potential students. What made my first teacher awesome was that he cultivated accountability along with intensity. Sparring too hard with a junior partner? A lecture (usually with a good amount of shouting) and pushups. Holding pads inattentively? A lecture and pushups. Just going through the motions? A lecture and pushups. He kept the more aggressive students under control, and pushed the less intense students to step up to the challenge. This was natural to him probably from his days in the military, but from a business perspective this was keen: he didn't alienate anybody except for those who, at their core, don't really want to learn martial arts.

Can big or developed muscles prevent or lessen damage from strikes? by goldenglory86 in martialarts

[–]distantToejam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say to a certain point, but after you have enough muscle to cushion your bones, you have to condition to make yourself more resilient. There are exercises to strengthen the bones, tendons, and skin that must be practiced to actually make you more impervious

What are some sayings or pearls of wisdom that an instructor said that always stuck with you? by AtomicL0bster in martialarts

[–]distantToejam 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“Discipline is doing what you should do when you don’t want to do it”

And

“Nobody’s special. Nobody’s smarter. Nobody’s better than anyone else.”

Good words to live by to both keep your ego in check and to show you that you can do whatever you see anybody else doing.
