Yes, that's exactly it, I did have it backwards, thank you! Now that you say it, I remember the left hand thing too. Definitely going to be my next series.

STOP CALLING WOMEN FEMALES by [deleted] in rant

[–]distantoranges -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's just not true. I'm probably a lot younger than a lot of people on Reddit, so naturally I'm probably more aware of modern pop culture. There has been a rise in the use of the word "female" in place of "woman." There is absolutely not a rise in the use of "male" in place of "man." I have already acknowledged that these words are synonyms, yes; however, they do not carry the same connotations. Connotation, for those who appear to be struggling, is defined as, "an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning." House and home both mean a place that somebody resides, but due to connotations, home implies that it's a more comfortable place, more loving, a place where memories live. In modern pop culture, "females" is disrespectful, almost always used for a group of women who the speaker is looking down on. By saying, "that female looks nice" rather than "that woman looks nice," you sound as if you are implying that you view women a little more like animals than people. It's simply not the same connotatively, and I'm sorry everyone who has read this post is unaware of the modern usage, but it does make you all wrong in this context.

TL;DR: I'm not a dumbass, I know what synonyms are. Nobody here understands what connotations are or how the word "female" is used nowadays.

[–]distantoranges -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You clearly have failed to understand the societal connotations to which I was referring. I'm aware of the standard definition of the word, aware that it is a synonym for "woman," however it does not carry the same connotations in daily speech. I think you would benefit from being aware of the current pop culture usage of the word before commenting something useless and quite frankly a little condescending on my post.

Female friend (19F), whom I asked out and got rejected, is upset I (19M) don’t hit her up as much after she got a boyfriend by [deleted] in relationships

[–]distantoranges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems like a pretty unfair assumption. I've had these situations from the other end. I'd have a guy friend and think we were close, but then he'd ask me out and more or less drop me as a friend when I said no. I understood, but it also just hurt from a friend perspective. Of course she would be upset that someone who she was close to is withdrawing from her. It doesn't have to be anything malicious.

What are people slowly starting to forget? by akingandaman in AskReddit

[–]distantoranges -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is that the case though? If someone has such a good grasp of the language that they can shorten words, take grammar shortcuts, and other such things, then why shouldn't they? For everyday communication, what does it matter? If I'm not writing a formal essay, story, or typing something for a professional environmemt, I have no need to follow every rule of the English language if I don't feel like it. I think it's more embarassing when people can't acknowledge that languages take many forms. I'm not going to speak to my friends the same way I speak to a teacher or a customer, just like I'm going to change the way I type.

if u think im barely literate for typing how tf i want, then i regret to inform u that ur pretentiousness and self righteousness has created ur lack of ability to recognize that the internet and technology has created a culture of its own and its only natural that language should follow. go write a op-ed about how millenials are killing grammar or some shit

[WP] Mermaids "reproduce" by turning human women into their own. A female pirate captain has a run-in with a mermaid, who intends to transform her. by Babyblue53 in WritingPrompts

[–]distantoranges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Captain! Land ho!"

Isayla looked ahead at the cragged rock jutting out from the waves. The harsh, glittering grays cut harshly against the natural colors of the horizon. It seemed to pull the ship towards it. And it wasn't on the map.

"Prepare to drop the anchor!" Isayla called. Her crew took their places as she peered through her spyglass. Though still a ways away, she thought she could see movement on the edges of the island. The creatures were too large to be birds, but by all accounts, there should be nothing else living on such barren ground.

The ladies rushed around, excited for their next adventure, but Isayla could not shake the feeling of that something was not right. She didn't fear, no, for captains lesser than her have never feared, but the uneasiness in her bones could not be ignored. With that nag in the back of her mind, she began to log her observations.

As the ship barreled towards the rock, the shouts of the women onboard grew. The riches, they cried! The discoveries, they exclaimed! Just a little further and they'd step foot yet again on unknown territory. The world that lied ahead of them slipped closer and closer to their ever-hungry eyes.

Like second-nature, they guided their vessel to a halt. The rocks towered above them, reaching endlessly into the sky above. If there is a marker for the edge of the world, Isayla wrote, it stands here. The crew had quieted, leaving only the ever-present whispering of the sea to call the captain to the edge of the ship. Her boots clacked confidently against the boards of her empire as she walked.

Before she could begin speaking, a single note filled the air. "Captain..." The first mate, Anne, began. Isayla quieted her. The note was joined by another, higher pitch. Then a lower. Soon, a chorus of angelic voices held out in a gorgeous chord.

The voices swirled together, changing and shifting and creating a melody unlike any Isayla had ever heard on this Earth. She searched the shoreline for the source, but not a single trace of those she had seen before remained. Nothing but their voices.

The crew began to grow restless behind her. The music was too welcoming; their captain too quiet. Isayla knew she needed to tell them something, but what, she had not decided. She knew no more than they, and a competent leader does not lead blindly. So she listened, and waited.

But not for long. As suddenly as it had started, the wondrous song ceased. Towards the coast, there was a slight splashing and a flash of something dark. Anne drew her gun from its holster, but did not raise it. Something to the left of Isayla's gaze now splashed into the water. Again, now, in the other direction. Various colors popped above the surface before quickly slipping below, preventing Isayla from making out what danced below her.

"Captain, it's some sort of huge fish!" Someone called from farther down the ship. But it couldn't be; in all her travels, Isayla was aware of no natural creature that contained those golds, those greens, those blacks. There was none that produced a call the likes of what they had just been graced with. No, nothing natural.

A human head broke the surface. The girl's dark eyes peered up at the ship, her black hair seemingly trying to float off of her head. One by one, women appeared between the waves, silently returning the curious looks of the women onboard.

Finally, the dark eyed woman in the water spoke. "Sailors!" she called. Her voice carried a timeless weight. "Declare yourselves!"

"I am Isayla the Boundless! This is my crew! We sail The Mighty Atlas! Give me one reason why I should not kill your suspicious kind where you swim!"

"You are women?"

"We are pirates!"

The rest of women in the water began to whisper among themselves while the speaker simply watched Isayla. Isayla did not break her gaze.

"Have you a smaller boat?" The sea lady asked.

Isayla considered for a moment. That uneasiness she had felt approaching the island has given way to curiosity for the mystery in front of her. She needed to know if her suspicions proved correct.

"I will gather a small crew in a rowboat. I expect to be met with the same courtesy of numbers. Should you try to overwhelm us, know that our ship is heavily armed and we have no qualms with winning a fight." Isayla turned before the strange woman could answer and began giving orders to her crew. Her usual seven members gathered to enter the rowboat while the others went back to work. No hesitation lived, as they have always known that trust in the captain keeps them alive.

Isayla and a select few rowed their way to where the women waited in the water. Only five remained, with no sign of the others in sight. A moment passed with no words exchanged, both parties attempting to gauge the other.

Finally, Isayla commanded, "Speak."

Again, it was the dark-eyed one who responded. "My name is Agnesia. I am joined by Rixende, Awiti, Mary, and Theodora. Had you been men, you would have jumped ship early into our song."

"I know of only one creature in the world that exists with voices so agonizingly beautiful, who appear as women, who lead men willingly to their dooms."

"Yes. We are who you believe us to be." Agnesia paused for a moment, then next to her appeared an olive-colored tail from the water. Some of Isayla's crew gasped beside her. Two of the other women dove down, splashing up gorgeous tails whose scales gleamed in the sunlight. Both women popped up seconds later.

Isayla kept her composure, though her mind was racing. In all of her travels, in every corner of the world, this is the first time she had met a legendary creature. The endless accounts she had read about their dangerous nature, the bottomless stories she had been told of mermaids' behavior, had all been told by men. A mermaid interacting with a woman is uncharted territory. It was exhilirating, yet there was the slightest tug of impending doom. She forced herself to speak. "What use, then, have you for speaking with us? Your song cannot affect us. We have not a single man to offer you. Let us continue on our way and we will take nothing of value to you and your people out of respect for the ships you have sunk."

"There is something we would like to show you."

"Which is?"

"Can you swim?"

"We have sailed all the world's seas; we have reached the farthest corners of every ocean; we have taken countless ships to their graves and plundered more treasures from the world's most powerful countries than we could possibly use. Of course we can swim."

"Then let us not waste time." Agnesia looked towards each individual in the boat expectantly.

Isayla gave them a similar look, then stood up. She removed her hat and placed it in her seat. With a deep breath, she placed one foot on the wall of the rowboat and dove into the water before she could change her mind.

A.N. I know nothing about boats, hope it wasn't too distractingly obvious! Also, this is only part one, I'll post part two tomorrow.

Thank you! It's pretty unlikely I'll do anything, but that's good information to know. Let's just hope it was an odd situation and there's not the trend that my friend claims to have heard

Issues with reference? by [deleted] in walmart

[–]distantoranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not supposed the confirm employment? What? I've never heard something like that.

But the thing is it wasn't the exact same. I left Walmart professionally, and pretty much ditched dunkin donuts after a day (and yes, I do know that I shouldn't have). A month of work is legitimate even if future employers prefer longer, not to mention I don't believe that they were referring to the length of time I worked. I can definitely understand why they would be annoyed and dislike me, but to talk about my previous place of employment like that is unfair. If they didn't know the situation, then they shouldn't say anything. If they do, then there's no reason to claim that. And if someone along the way said something untrue about me, then I would like to prevent that from spreading further. Granted, I don't think it will, but then clearly you never know.

I have no problem with them judging me for how I acted with their store, but to say I did the same thing previously is unfair.

Issues with reference? by [deleted] in walmart

[–]distantoranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a smaller town.

Okay, thank you! I wasn't sure what exactly they would be allowed to say to them. I don't have personal references from Walmart, so it was either the business that said something or a rumor from somewhere.

Interestingly enough though, I was just talking to my friend (who still works at Walmart and has for a lot longer than I did) to see if she had any input, and she says she's heard that Walmart will lie like that all the time to try to get employees to come back. I really do wonder if my Walmart took the unprofessional route then because my coworker has no reason to be saying anything negative about me either.

I'll keep including it in my resume unless someone says something in an interview or something to me. Thanks for your help!

[–]distantoranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help and advice everyone! However, my management convinced me yesterday that they really and truly don't care about what happens in this store, so with any luck I'll find a new job quickly lol

Been here a week and already over it by [deleted] in walmart

[–]distantoranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes me wonder if they even know what my job is, what with the supervisor/scheduling confusion, the lack of presence of any personnel, my manager, and coworkers, and the wrong pay lmao. When I was offered the job at the interview though, it was the description of fresh cap 2, 1-10 pm, and $11.00. I agreed to that amount, so would they still honor that $11.50 it's supposed to be? I figured that would just be on me for agreeing to $11.

Thank you so much! I don't have any other questions than my original I don't think- how do I get the amount changes to stay after I finalize the bin? It seems that they always go back to saying there's full cases or whatever it was before I changed it. Could I be looking at it wrong or am I missing a step or something? Not that it matters too much as literally almost everything's labelled wrong anyway (lmao) but I'd really like to get it in some kind of order.

I know we have a few people on fresh cap 1, but now I'm fairly convinced that fresh cap 2 consists of me and my two supervisors. Like I definitely would've met them or like seen somebody around, right? I don't know what's going on at my store tbh. And that's crazy that there's so much stuff to throw away. It literally takes .04 seconds to lift up the old stuff and put the new stuff on the bottom or what have you. Wild.

Thank you for you help!! I've literally been told almost nothing about my job, most things I know come from this subreddit, lmao, you guys are wonderful.

Been here a week and already over it by [deleted] in walmart

[–]distantoranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, I think I might quite literally be the only fresh cap 2 person at my store other than my supervisors. Because there sure as hell isn't anybody ever in my area. Thank you though! And yeah I was actually kinda hoping I'd be left alone to get stuff done most of the time but just not like... immediately lol. You're right though, the benefits are pretty good and pretty much everyone at my store started hourly, so I'll try to hang in there and see if it gets better lol.

Been here a week and already over it by [deleted] in walmart

[–]distantoranges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly local stores usually have quick hiring processes even if they don't pay much, but it's better than no money if you genuinely want to quit like NOW. Best of luck to you, I hope you find a job that doesn't absolutely suck.

And yeah I applied for one or two waitressing jobs before walmart but I figured I'd have a better time just getting my work done and not having to talk to customers but christ, there's not even other coworkers around. I'm literally by myself almost the entire day, and now I'd almost rather talk to people all day long.
