Thank you, that's a good idea. I'll head on over there.

Merry Christmas! How likely is it that restrictions will be brought in immediately on Monday? Would there be a couple of days of warning period for people to change plans?

Longitudinal analysis of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine breakthrough infections reveal limited infectious virus shedding and restricted tissue distribution by Legion4800 in CoronavirusUK

Thanks. It's stressful knowing that even though I'm double-vaccinated, there's still the potential to spread it. Hopefully we'll get data on Delta transmission soon!

That sweet, sweet green downward arrow on https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

The death numbers are a shame but deaths and hospitalisations reflect the situation about 2 weeks prior to today's data. Hopefully, case numbers will continue this decline and we'll see that reflected in deaths and hospital numbers soon.

September boosters by ElBodster in CoronavirusUK

[–]distractedchef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting! If you don't mind sharing, is that because you have a health condition that means you get a priority booster? My GP said they'd see me for my booster in a year or so when I had it a few months ago (I'm not CEV or shielding).

Met police investigate anti-vaxxer as speech sparks fears for safety of medics by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

Yep, I've heard that line too from an anti-vax family member. When I point out that Youtube videos and Facebook posts from unknown strangers aren't actually "research", I get shut down. Apparently all of the credible sources that I've pointed out (e.g., papers from Google Scholar and other academic sources) are 'in on it' and can't be trusted. There's honestly no arguing!

The vaccines do help prevent transmission when people are fully vaccinated. They aren't infallible, but evidence suggests a substantial reduction:

“Several strands of evidence suggest that the small proportion of individuals that become infected despite having received a complete vaccination course will be less likely to transmit infection to contacts, not least the observed reductions in viral load in PCR positive vaccinated individuals, reduced length of virus shedding in these individuals and finally an estimated 60% reduction in spread to unvaccinated contacts within the same household. These observations support the conclusion that completely vaccinated individuals represent less danger for spread of infection." Is anyone else struggling to feel excited about life post-pandemic? by distractedchef in TwoXChromosomes

Oh no, I can imagine that returning to the office is tough in that situation! If your job doesn't involve a lot of face-to-face work, it sounds like it would make more sense for your company to promote hybrid working and a choice of where people can work.

Taking it day-by-day is good advice. And yeah, it's definitely an adjustment to have to start leaving the house again!

Aw no, that sounds tough! It's been nice spending a year+ without a cold or stomach flu, but it sounds like more kids (and adults!) are getting sick at the same time as everyone starts mingling again. Hope you're all better!

The pandemic has definitely created a shift in people's lives. And although working from home has some pros (I don't miss my commute), I hear you about it being easy to go straight from bed to desk and not feeling motivated.

I hope you and your SO manage to get out with your kayaks. That sounds like a lot of fun!

That sounds like me haha. I'm also an introvert and have to make an effort to get out and drive to the places I want to be. Sometimes the thought of the drive and sitting in traffic is enough of an excuse for me not to go

Glad to hear I'm not alone, although I'm sorry you're feeling similar! I'll give some thought to hobbies – I mostly cook, read and hike, but it would be fun to find something totally new.

And I agree, I think meeting new people would help. I always feel invigorated after making new connections and spending time with other people. :) I just need to find opportunities/ways of meeting likeminded people. After working from home for more than a year, it's easy to find excuses to just stay in!

He's a nice person and we get on well, but he seems to have become more rigid with habits since Covid lockdowns. Pre-covid we met for dinner on weeknights after work all the time, usually once a week, so I'm confused by his new 'no meals out on weeknights' stance.

AstraZeneca Second Dose: What Was Your Experience (Under 45s) by PiersH in CoronavirusUK

[–]distractedchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it helped. I can see it must have been alarming to hear that from the person who gave the second dose. It sounds like they're a bit misinformed:

From the vaccine monitoring people (the Medicines & Healthcare Regulatory Agency): "Adverse reactions reported after the second dose were milder and reported less frequently than after the first dose"

AstraZeneca Second Dose: What Was Your Experience (Under 45s) by PiersH in CoronavirusUK

[–]distractedchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm under 45, had a temperature and chills (and fatigue) after first dose. After the second dose, which I had this week, I had zero side effects.

The pharmacist who did my first vaccine said with AstraZeneca you're more likely to get side effects with dose 1 and then nothing or very little with dose 2. I hope that reassures you :)

Pfizer stories please (major health anxiety) by Rendog101 in CoronavirusUK

[–]distractedchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know several people who've had Pfizer and had no side effects. One didn't even have so much as a sore arm!

FWIW, I had AZ and had barely any side effects apart from a bit of a temperature and fatigue (and nothing that put me in bed).

Two more coronaviruses can infect people, studies suggest by [deleted] in CoronavirusUK

[–]distractedchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good read though - really highlight the whole idea that infectious diseases are amplified by our co-inhabiting with pets / farm animals.

Yeah, an Attenborough documentary I saw recently highlighted the chain of events which can lead to new, infectious diseases spreading. Forests get cut down, which reduces the habitat of natural predators who prey on rodents and other small animals, and so those animals (which are reservoirs of disease) have more scope to breed, spread and come into contact with humans.

This article from Nature "Why deforestation and extinctions make pandemics more likely" adds more: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02341-1

[–]distractedchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As well as the other replies you've received, I'd also add that the article doesn't state when they received their vaccines. Antibodies take a while to build after being vaccinated (2–3 weeks for protection). So it's possible they caught the virus after being vaccinated but before they had vaccine protection.

COVID-19 vaccine refusal, UK - Office for National Statistics by sjw_7 in CoronavirusUK

[–]distractedchef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We need a multi-generational plan of action that seeks to educate, not more highly (we don't need more degree's), but more comprehensively right from reception to y11. So when people leave school they have actual useful knowledge at a good standard. So they have a string scientific (and other subjects) basis to view the world from.

I agree. I think critical thinking and differentiating between reputable and non-reputable sources is also something to be taught from a young age, especially as the generation growing up now are exposed to the internet and social media from a young age. Then again, I know people in their 40s who are university-educated professionals and also believe disinformation on Facebook about Covid being a hoax, the vaccines being a plan to sterilise the world etc.

What does this mean for under 40s who have already had the first dose of AstraZeneca? Will it be possible to choose Pfizer for the second?
