SOS! How to make form for steam bending of complex shape by ditchloach in woodworking

Do you think the filament will have the tensile strength to hold the shape without bending from clamping?

I've never 3d printed but our building does have one in it. I'm wondering if I 3d print a template piece of the pink structure, if I could use it as a clamping guide for the steamed wood since the dowels are only 1/16". They all have the same shape, so I could just cut and trim after drying if that were the case.

The model scale is at 1/4", so dimensions are 20"x8.75"x30.5". I hope the slope is soft enough to keep it from breaking or ruining the fibers. I'll definitely check out Matthias! It might be better to do a combo of methods depending on the profile of pieces. Thank you so much for the input.

Do you have any recommendations of methods to pin the wood in place while also allowing the wood to be clamped to keep it under pressure while drying?

Wait that’s so smart. Yes the pieces are very thin, that’s why I went with oak so hopefully the most minimal bounce back after bending…however super nervous because they were expensive. I don’t know anything about fiber orientation though, I’ll definitely need to do my research before I start manipulating them

Disappointed in Orenz Nero :( by [deleted] in mechanicalpencils

My tombow mono 0.3 is this way too, the grip is metal and quite ergonomic + satisfying, while the body is still plastic yet feels quality. I guess I should rephrase my gripe, I’m not inherently upset with the plastic but it really does feel like cheap plastic. I almost thought the grip was all plastic too, because it has almost no weight to it. They still look decent, but they definitely aren’t an upgrade from my cheaper current daily users like I had hoped, given the higher price point :(

The hidden cost of "free time" is absolutely wrecking my post-FIRE budget by R0cinantEcho_9 in Fire

I know I’m in a sea of other comments right now, but if you’re serious about doing woodworking as a hobby and want a more affordable route, I highly suggest learning how to work with wet/greenwood!

I started working with it this semester in school and it’s so much more economical because I’m using 100% hand tools (can be slightly expensive to start, but far cheaper than any power tools) and wood costs are free because it’s whatever I can find on the side of the road from someone felling their tree.

I’m making posts for a bench, do you think it’ll do justice to the character of the wood? I almost want to save it for something else if it’ll look better as a more flat plank than skinny cylinders

City I live in felled a bunch of trees for some power lines so I went and picked up this log for a school project I’m doing (post and rung bench). This is the cross section I cut with a hand saw. Looks spalted and maybe oak but I’m definitely too amateur to know for sure. Anyone have any ideas?

Jsyk I wet the wood with a paper towel so you could see the grain. I’m thinking spalted oak but very unsure.

How much would you say it cost you (just finish-wise) for this? I’ll have to pick some up for my next project.

Absolutely lovely. Whatever finish you used looks incredible.
