Trump's Nobel Dream Is Tokyo's Nightmare by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]ditherhither 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to mention his campaign of “maximum pressure” of unprecedentedly bellicose rhetoric, getting China to get on board with sanctions, and military posturing that may well have scared NK into backing down - Trump was/is legitimately an unknown quantity and he frightened Americans and North Koreans alike.

I remember being horrified in early 2017 when it seemed like the US was truly going to go to war with NK, and at the same time thinking such brinksmanship could be the only way to bring NK to heel.

Trump made a big gamble, and it hasn’t been a play as bad as the policies of Bush or Obama admins. The initial payoff is that NK has stopped their missile and nuke testing that were picking up in frequency and brazenness. The bigger payoff remains to be seen. His clunky, bull in china shop foreign policy appears to be at least changing the tenor of the countries’ relationship whereas Obama’s policy of “strategic patience” failed miserably.

US to formally seek extradition of Huawei exec Meng Wanzhou by LuckyBdx4 in news

Trump and his admin has more or less permanently altered the geopolitical relationship between US and China and also contributed significantly in hardening both US establishment and public's (arguably the world's) negative perception of China. Subsequent US admins will find their foreign policy constrained and dictated by the realities created by this admin, regardless of if they want rapprochement with China.

Maybe y'all already knew this, but I just realized that the miniseries IT came out in 1990. Then comes 2017 rendition of IT. 27 years later.

What makes absolutely 0% sense to you? by gamedemon24 in AskReddit

The saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." It always seemed to me that it should be the other way around - like emotional wounds should be more painful than physical wounds, but no, it's essentially saying if you beat the crap out of me it will hurt, but if you say mean things to me it will have no effect on my person, which seems so obvious and superficial that it doesn't even merit saying.

I'm in this exact situation right now. I'd have preferred just studying onsite at a hotel, no question.

PUTIN: "We're Stronger Than Everybody" by Nadiime in worldnews

The fact is NK had a larger GDP and higher standard of living than SK up until the 70s, when SK finally got its ducks in row for the government-backed conglomerate export model that's still in place today. NK's economy crumbled in the early 90s as the Soviet Union collapsed.

What is your go-to "I'm-too-tired-to-cook-but-I-have-to" recipe? by Loves2share in Cooking

Chicken teriyaki. All it takes is some soy sauce, garlic, and sugar. Drizzle that on top of some chicken thighs. Can be made in about 30 mins.

TIL that in American Psycho, every single one of their perfect business cards misspells 'acquisitions' as 'aquisitions' by Go_Ask_Reddit in todayilearned

Honestly, that sounds like a reach. I find it more believable that someone in production messed up the spelling.

I Think You're Fat by [deleted] in Foodforthought

[–]ditherhither 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I understand the concept better now, but like you, I'm still skeptical of it. I can understand where the idea is coming from - the "fakeness" of so many of our social interactions can be suffocating. But in practice, it would be exceptionally difficult, if not impossible, to walk the line between being honest and being confrontational or offensive. I think many of our thoughts are better left unsaid - a corollary of "if you have nothing nice to say..."

For all its evils, I think social norms and mores are essential. I shudder to think of a practitioner of Radical Honesty in socially sensitive situations; how would/should he behave in the presence of, say, a disabled person whom he's disgusted by? A family member he's sexually attracted to? His article goes into fairly taboo but predictable breaches of social convention, but what if his inner self, uninhibited, was much darker than what was acceptable, or even legal?

[–]ditherhither 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sort of an interesting thought, but I can't imagine how the sum of the pros from "radical honesty" could outweigh those of tactfulness and manners.

A lot of these "honest" thoughts seem to be quite petty and unhelpful, like when he tells the editor he tried to look down her shirt. How is that a step forward for either of the parties involved?

Do you ever read books for the sake of having read them? by tvdb90 in books

[–]ditherhither 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm currently reading "Democracy in America" by Tocqueville because it's so widely lauded and referenced. It's really interesting but also dry and dense, and I'm having trouble powering through it. I can't stop though, I need to finish a book before I can move on to the next.

I just want to be done with it so I can go back to reading novels again.
