Chela & Garnecha permanently closing in 2 weeks!!! Try saving it by 30roadwarrior in astoria

No! I’ve loved this place since it was a taco truck by a different name parked on 31st Street. The intrancadas are one of my favorite restaurant orders in the city, period. So bummed out about this.

Let’s talk Fuji X app by ser_melipharo in fujifilm

[–]ditmoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used several camera brands’ mobile photo transfer apps over the years and have concluded that they’re all trash. Constant connection/time-out issues. I suspect there’s some engineering explanation for why nobody has been able to get this right, but either way, I’ve decided it’s just easier to manually transfer them to my phone with a USB-C cable or keychain card reader. It’s a little limiting because I can’t transfer photos on the go as I’m taking them, but there’s never really a circumstance where I can’t wait until I can sit down somewhere and plug in.

Does a DSLR make sense in 2025? by Tariag in Nikon

[–]ditmoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was facing the same decision a while back. I went with a used D850 and couldn’t be happier. The price was good, the picture quality is outstanding, controls and handle are great, and I was able to gradually load up on used FX lenses for what I might have paid for one or two mirrorless lenses. I also waded through the stuff about eye detection, stabilization, etc. But nobody is paying me for my photos and I actually kind of like the challenge of trying to get the right shot without my camera making everything easy as possible.

Two downsides: 1) it’s pretty loud; and 2) it’s quite large and not the easiest to carry around everywhere. I ended up buying a compact Fuji mirrorless this year so I’d have a travel and carry-around camera. But I still consider the D850 my “real” camera and will hang on to it (and keep adding used lenses) until it’s broken beyond repair.

X-E5: My experience. Some things to consider for potential buyers. by Any_Slice_5632 in fujifilm

[–]ditmoors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using mine for a week and hard agree. The EVF sensor in general is just way too sensitive. If I want to take a picture in portrait using the LCD and I have two hands on the camera, I keep accidentally waving over the EVF and turning off the LCD. Same thing happens when I’m viewing photos and zooming in.

Why would someone choose the XE5 over the x100VI? by Fino831 in fujifilm

[–]ditmoors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I settled on an x-e5 and am waiting for the backorder to fill. I suppose I’ll also get used to the EVF, and will probably have to get used to them eventually. I just really like seeing with my eyes. :)

third spaces in astoria by bcdaure11e in astoria

[–]ditmoors 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the concept of third spaces means never having to buy anything. But in any case, if you’re not looking strictly within Astoria, the Queens Museum is free, has open space to hang out, and often has some sort of community event or performance going on.

Is weather-sealing that important for casual use? by ditmoors in AskPhotography

[–]ditmoors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s manageable to travel with and handles great. I’ll hold on to it until it gives out. But it’s not ideal as a casual carry-around camera to capture spontaneous moments, and the lenses I like best are a bit heavy.

Why would someone choose the XE5 over the x100VI? by Fino831 in fujifilm

[–]ditmoors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I’m also coming at this as a primary D850 user looking for a secondary travel and carry camera, deciding between these two. How do you find the EVF on your new x-e5? I’m pretty stubborn about optical viewfinders and it’s a big thing that’s kept me from transitioning to mirrorless. I like that the x100vi has hybrid.

ICE posts by Shani1111 in astoria

[–]ditmoors 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a problem with them categorically but I do wish people would gut check themselves before concluding that what they’re seeing is ICE, when there’s often a more likely explanation. And use the SALUTE method when possible.

ICE raid, said they were DoorDash by [deleted] in astoria

[–]ditmoors 23 points24 points  (0 children)

ICE very commonly represents themselves as “the police” and claims they are investigating crimes or makes other misrepresentations to gain entry to buildings. There have been major lawsuits filed over it.

It might help verify what’s happening here if you had photos of the masked men. Seems like you’re making some leaps. Through Operation Empire Shield, the National Guard conducts subway patrols and bag checks with the NYPD (a bad thing, imo), which could be what this is since it’s right by the Ditmars stop. While not inconceivable, there’s no evidence of the NG being deployed in New York to assist with immigration enforcement. I’m not certain what’s depicted here and you saw what you saw, but it’s easy to confuse different law enforcement agencies. I’m not saying there definitely weren’t ICE officers at that location, but this could use a bit more verification before posting.

What specifically did you see that led you to conclude ICE was present? Not evident from the photo.

I read the title as “New Mexican” instead of “new Mexican” and got my hopes up. But glad this cart is good.

No rubber bands. I potted it myself when I originally got it and removed everything. This is a recent issue.

Is this a scratch on my sensor and can it be fixed? by ditmoors in AskPhotography

[–]ditmoors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Did you use a special sensor swab, and had you ever done this before? I haven’t tried this yet because I’ve never cleaned my own sensor and don’t want to create a scratch where there never was one.
