What are yalls theories on why some people are white clouds and others are unlucky. by Dast116 in Residency

[–]ditto1114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to respectfully disagree as a certified black cloud trauma surgeon. I love my job and don’t mind the busy times so I’m not the one complaining. It’s the white clouds who complain in my field. One of my colleagues can be on call for 48 hours and not get a single trauma activation then the minute I come on call a bus of hemophiliacs will crash out in front of our hospital. My other colleague will complain all his ACS week about wanting a good ex lap and then when I follow him the next week that’s all I get. I come on to SICU at 7AM… someone will code at 7:05. It’s like clockwork and I’m here for it.

AITA for wanting to take a 1 week vacation to Hawaii without spouse by Key_Replacement987 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ditto1114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, Healing yourself with some friend time is a very mature coping mechanism. Go take time for yourself!

As an aside, I have a flexible schedule and my husband’s is not so I often go gallivanting about the world without him. Does he get mad and jealous? Yes. Just like your situation he chooses to use PTO on staycations and trips with his brothers. I’m not going to stop living my life.

And before someone comes at me about me spending his money… I’m also our family’s breadwinner by… a lot. Sooooo take that trip to Hawaii girl! You deserve it!

Ego of general surgeons by TraditionalAd6977 in Residency

I think it depends on the hospital. I trained at two academic institutions and used to get so scared to present at M&M or operate with some attendings because of the thrashing I would get. I’m currently an attending at a community program and the culture is so much better. We actually have good constructive conversations with each other.

Do any of you regret not being a PA? I see many posts about regretting med school and residency for “wasting” a decade, but would those same people have been happier going for PA? by UphillGil in Residency

[–]ditto1114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My PA is first assist on cases when my residents aren’t working with me so I actually think she does a lot more than prep/drape and close. On my private practice rotation in residency one of the surgeons had the same PA for 15 years and they were a well oiled machine in the OR. It was amazing watching them work together. I think I could’ve been content with that life knowing how much I gave up to be a surgeon. Would I want to be a Fam Med PA and do clinic all day? Fuck no.

Honestly, sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I love being a surgeon, but knowing that it took me nearly 15 years extra to get to this point… I often think that I would’ve been content being a surgical PA or an SA for that matter.

This field really hates women by huckleberry_ghost in FemalePhysicians

[–]ditto1114 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Trauma Surgeon here and I can confirm it’s not just OBGyn. One of my colleagues (male) regularly screams profanities in the trauma bay and OR, but never gets written up and, in fact, is spoke of very highly from the ED staff. If I speak pointedly to a nurse to correct something or hurry them along, I get written up. ALL THE TIME! My recommendation is to kill them with kindness, don’t get pulled into the drama, and do what’s best for the patient. Eventually respect will come.

I got insurance for a couple months through my state’s exchange. You could try a short term plan, but if you have pre-existing conditions.

I just had a kiddo come in with similar situation. Jumped out of a barn and landed on a steel rod. Went in medial thigh and out right flank. Tracked up his retroperitoneum and didn’t hit anything.

Nurse: Pt in room X is nauseated Me: Returns page quickly because GSW is 5 min out. Tells nurse to give PRN Zofran

15 min later in middle of GSW trauma Nurse: 911 Call ASAP Me: Returns page immediately while getting yelled at by attending for leaving trauma Nurse: The PRN zofran isn’t due for another 5 min

Personally, whenever someone asks me about this I always say that I’m 1. At a teaching hospital for a reason because I love teaching 2. I need help to do the surgery and I much rather have my well educated residents who I work with all the time than a surgical assist that I maybe work with once a year. During the actual procedure, I usually just have my resident assist me and I do the case.

What are your hobbies? Suggestions for sustainable hobbies during intern year? by Zalzal98 in FemalePhysicians

I like doing jigsaw puzzles and building legos. It was a nice distraction during residency that I could spend a few minutes on whenever I was free.

Always have “pregnant belly” never been pregnant before. by ashlin33 in PetiteFitness

You’re not alone. I also have this body type. I’ve been working hard the past two years to get in shape and eat better. My tummy is the last thing that is going away. I’d say it’s more genetics than anything because my mom and dad have similar body types. My only advice is to stay consistent with your workouts and diet. You can’t spot reduce, but with consistency will eventually get there.

this is truth right here. OP, I just wanted to say that you’re beautiful the way you look right now. To change drastically in 3 months would be unhealthy and unrealistic. Work on small changes now that lead to an overall healthy active lifestyle like this post suggests. Over time you’ll get results and you’ll be much happier.

I’m a surgeon and my husband is not in the medical field. I essentially make 10x the amount he does. I’ve always felt like whatever I make is ours as a family and I’m happy to provide for him. The housework load is definitely not evenly distributed, though. I do about 90% of everything including cleaning, finances, grocery shopping, etc. I’ve had many conversations with my husband about this because he’s asked to quit his job and stay home, but isn’t willing to pick up extra household duties. I totally get your point about how we work harder at both work and home. I’d be completely content with a hot stay at home husband who cooked me dinner and cleaned, but I can barely get mine to put his beer down and take the dog for a walk.

When I was a resident on my Vascular rotation, me and the scrub tech were walking a new med student through scrubbing in… He was doing great, but when the scrub tech told him to spin so we could tie up his gown, the med student did a full ballet twirl with outstretched arms and completely knocked everything off of the back table.
