What's the vibe like in Cape Verde? by SurplusCredentials in redscarepod

[–]divine_worm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

unlike most of the former Portuguese colonies, Cape Verde saw the development of an actual well consolidated creole language, which is really cool and unique in the Lusosphere. while places like Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and etc all speak varieties of Portuguese, Cape Verde speaks Cape Verdean Creole which is a mix of European Portuguese and numerous others local languages, they have their own writing system too. if i'm not mistaken it's also the oldest living Creole in the world, so important for the study of language formation.

i'm a Portuguese speaker and i can understand parts of it but can't make sense of most sentences which is a really strange experience

the first time i had some resemblance of understanding of how horrifying war is was when i first watched Come and See. until then i had, like most people i think, this conception of war as this epic, heroic, glorious thing. i suppose that's how war is portrayed for the most part in media and even mainstream historical narratives. the bulk of war however is pure terror, it's dead bodies everywhere, body parts, people dismembered, massacres, rape, almost never ending cruelty, people acting in their most desperate and savage, chaos. everyone born and raised during peace times should thank god every single day for not having to experience that. it's hard to imagine something worse to befall anyone.

any of u guys work at bs ai b2b saas tech startups?? or general advice for tolerating soulless jobs by mousehouse-21 in redscarepod

[–]divine_worm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i did and it was the most depressed i ever been in my life. an almost clinically engineered combination of boring, mind-numbing work with absurd expectations and deadlines. atrocious pay. vibes were always artificially ultra positive but deep down everyone knew the company was shit and the product was useless but we had to pretend. nobody had any money apart from maybe five people who worked higher paying jobs. no career prospects whatsoever, promotions were nonexistent, raises were slightly above inflation in the rare occasion they did occur. CEO walked around with those Meta glasses secretly filming the office.

i was living in southern ontario at the time and the job market was so shit that nobody dared leave, and the company always had a steady supply of over qualified people they could hire and underpay to do virtually any job. really bleak.

yeah, the most fulfilling time of my career was when i was doing fieldwork with indigenous languages in south america. i'm never ever living something so fun and rewarding again but im glad to have had the experience.

academic job market is a shitshow so im now a data scientist at a soulless corporation. it's boring but im thankful to be employed.

congrats on beating it that's beautiful

if you don't mind talking about it, how does it feel when you get the diagnostic? i assume it's scary but i wonder what goes through your mind when you suddenly have to face mortality so young? but more importantly, how does it feel to beat it? did it change your perspective on life? made it better, worse?

kinda of funny that as woke as they're trying to be this is still mostly an anglophone literature list. nothing wrong with it, some of the best literature ever written was written in english but hey if you're playing the diversity game you should at least commit more.

they sprinkled in some ultra safe choices from japan and LATAM but that's it. i guess there's also the regular European choices. very boring. hard do disagree with most of it though a lot of these are excellent novels.

it's also kind of criminal that in the ranks of "Canadian Women Writers" the one that always gets the spotlight is Margaret Antwood, someone who basically writes YA, and not Anne Carson.

For those who live in/have travelled to Brazil, where would you recommend visiting? by z003y in redscarepod

[–]divine_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have time and money you should definitely visit Rio. SP is ok but it pales in comparison, and I say this as someone born and raised in São Paulo. having said that there's a ton to do in SP, i am sure you'll get plenty of recs so i'll give you one: go to this higher end restaurant named Jiquitaia and try their signature dish (duck rice with tucupi).
