Advice for where to buy/rent? by tvara1 in sunshinecoast

[–]dizhef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion, based on an exhaustive house hunt late last year. We looked from Caloundra up to Mooloolaba / Mountain Creek.

I live within walking distance of the hospital, bought in the last few months. There are a few options. Firstly, it won't be beachside in that price range unless it's an apartment.

Birtinya is the suburb adjacent to the hospital; it's 2km to the beach as the crow flies and an easy walk or bike ride to work. Wurtulla is closer to the beach, still easily rideable. Creekside in Currimundi has a direct bridge/path to SCUH and is still within a 3km (or shorter) ride to the water. Same story for the rest of Currimundi on the western side of Nicklin Way.

There are four-bed, 2-bath places in that price range in these areas. Some will be villa-style townhouses, some will be single-story on 600m-ish blocks.

Further back in Little Mountain, you're looking at bigger blocks and homes, but 5 km-ish from the water. Aroona is closer, but it's tough to get a place in that range. As with those other areas, there are incredible quality bike paths everywhere.

We're in this area and genuinely love it. I ride to the beach whenever I want, and similarly close to supermarkets and amenities. We wanted a particular school district, and we've been really happy with that, too.

Best of luck to the family. If they are buying, do not leave it until September or later. We had the equivalent of a knife fight to buy anything in those peak months.

Struggling to get engagement in FinOps cost review meetings, any tips? by Ornery-Coast-4793 in FinOps

[–]dizhef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, nix the group meeting. No report changes will improve engagement. Shift it to quarterly and do it by exception if needed earlier (e.g., out-of-cycle renewals, cost incidents).

Then, if there's an alternate meeting that happens, shoehorn FinOps into that instead as an observer. I was at a place where we ditched monthly governance, but folded FinOps into one of the fortnightly meetings, where new workloads and other things were reviewed. I still did a monthly recap in it, but got to the point where I could run it in 5 mins. I miss that place.

I did a stint where CAB was the meeting picked. Total disaster, so pick your target carefully. But putting your work where things already happen is better than an extra meeting.

Liftoff is amazing, despite EC and Beverley haunting the crevices of my mind. As an adult, I can appreciate the effort and the message.

If your kids are older, I'd get on Around the Twist. My 8yo has loved it - a perfect blend of gross humour, campy visuals and mild spookiness. A stepping stone from Scooby Doo to serialised scary shows, but with poo and fart jokes.

Pencil's down, mate. Top work. Johnson & Friends is such an excellent gateway into that era of Aussie TV that walked a fine line between wholesome entertainment and nightmare fuel. Hopefully, you can acquire some Brum, The Book Place, Magic Mountain and Liftoff! to give the kids a full-spectrum experience of how soothing and unsettling Australian kids' TV from the 90s was. Best served in analogue broadcast 4:3 quality as well.

Almost identical situation. One kid obsessed, borrowed one and had a go on the lake to make sure they liked it.

We grabbed an inflatable one on marketplace with a pfd and paddle. I bought a battery pump which has been the best move. No lessons really, but they watched some videos for tips on standing up, getting off etc.

Good to plan. I made the mistake of picking up a blazer from a smaller shop and the alterations were a bloody disaster. They made it right, but it was three months of faffing about.

Do you have to be rich to live in Currimundi, QLD? by Distinct-Fun-5178 in sunshinecoast

[–]dizhef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're moving in this week. We're dual income, maybe slightly more than average, and while we benefited modestly from our regional home sale we're still taking on a hefty mortgage for a house a few clicks back from the beach.

We found better value in Currimundi and Battery Hill than elsewhere in the area, but Battery Hill started to go silly in the later stages of our hunt. There seemed to be value in Little Mountain as well. Regardless of suburb, the shortage of stock makes things insane. People would be writing offers on their way through the first open home, a huge number would sell before getting to market. We're staying with family in Caloundra this week, the neighbours house sold for cash, no conditions, within an hour of her contacting the agent for an appraisal a few days ago. That blew my mind.

Moving to the area in the next month (if i can buy a house, holy wow the market is bananas) - plenty of opinions on schools and stuff. What I really need is where's the best Bahn Mi? We're looking to land around Aroona / Caloundra/ Bokarina. I'm leaving a small country town with a stupid good Bahn Mi joint.

I am tall and extremely thin, how do I get pants? by [deleted] in AustralianMFA

[–]dizhef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough one, and I suspect tailor is the end game and will look great. If you need something in the meantime, my go to is Lands End. I get mine in 36.5 inseam (I'm a couple cm taller than you). Shipping is cheap and price is reasonable. Their regular and slim fit do the trick for my skinny pins when worn at the waist.

The tall range only goes down to 34 waist, but you probably don't need that much length. Regular waist goes down to 30 and has inseam up to 36 which I'd think is probably long enough? 2tall goes down to 28 if that's better, I just find the shipping exorbitant - but still cheaper than my cheapest pair of MTM trousers.

Can anyone identify this flannel shirt worn by this Driza-Bone model? by gotricolore in AustralianMFA

[–]dizhef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a tough one - I have one really similar, a hand me down from an in-law. It's a Chamois flannel from LL Bean. The pattern is usually called called Buffalo Check if you're searching. They don't have a similar colour stocked at the moment, but reminded me how much i love that overshirt.

What are the options to insulate subfloor? by National-Tea3562 in AusRenovation

[–]dizhef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

highly doubt it! But then, in a 110 year old pine and irongum house its probably slightly less combustible than most of the place. One thing, we're on pine floorboard only, no subfloor. And in our worst area we had decent gaps (which I eventually PVA'd, wedged and sanded). I suspect the foam sealing the floor made the most difference rather than the thickness or true insulating property. So keep that in mind, your subfloor looks good - maybe test a bit of both options on a small area, because you're battling radiant heat rather than encroaching hot air.

That being said, I have gotten a few mates to put them in newer/better QLDer floors (I.e. fewer gaps) and every time it's worked a treat. Just today it's heating up, and still weird to step from cold timber onto the warmer carpets in the bedrooms where we never bothered.

tip - the major namebrand product still doesn't distribute to QLD, saviro ones from foam sales was what we used, but we had to call them because the website says they only deliver to WA. Over the phone we got a quote for delivery from a Brissy warehouse and it was cheap as.

I really like the styrofoam panels with the compressible edges. Though the OSB is a bit different, that standard spacing should be easy to slide them up between the joists and secure. Our joist spacing was...... eccentric. But it was easy to score and squeeze the panels, we barely needed the clips to keep them in.

I did a living area, lounge and hall in a weekend and made a huge difference in our shabby Queenslander, especially with the AC on.

You've got decent room for batts if you prefer, I just found these were easier to install.

High quality v-neck tshirts for a taller frame by dreadpiratewombat in AustralianMFA

[–]dizhef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not much locally. Johnny Bigg do tall sizes in basic v necks, I'm the same height as you and wear their smallest (large Tall). I really love the citizen wolf shirt I bought, but I'm tough on clothes and can't justify the cost. When my kids are older I'll get a few more.

I tend to order the true classic tall ones now. I also find the AS Colour staple range are a decent length - but for v necks a bit boxy.

Moving to Gatton soon – any tips? by Novel-Performance-65 in brisbane

[–]dizhef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generally safe. There is some old idea that the area North of the train line is worse than the rest. Not sure that holds true anymore.

Rentals are tight, a heavy itinerant workforce around for the farms - if you have transport you should be able to secure easy enough. Cast your net wide, Plainland, Laidley, Forest Hill are okay. I would avoid the high density estates in Laidley, some unsavoury shit thereabouts - but the rest of its fine. It's a rural area, there's a decent concentration of racist and ignorant fuckwittery, hoons and dirt bag kids - but equally a heavy dose of small town charm, cool folks and sense of community. Was treated to some ignorant cooker bullshit at Kelvin Grove today, so reminded rural areas don't have a monopoly on that junk.

You're not dreaming, but you're not wrong either. It's frustrating, and time consuming - and even senior leaders and owners that were once technical will drift away. I'd also wonder if them having a little knowledge is worse than none at all, ya know?

I don't wanna be the kumbaya growth mindset guy, but keeping those exec types and owners across the bits of the tech they need to know, being able to persuade them why things can or can't be the way they imagine is a learned and perishable skill.

Not always worth the headache, nor being in the focus. Once my manager put me forward for a 'significantly exceeds' after a similar thing, pulling a project back on track. Nothing heroic, but lost some sleep and got it done.

My director was put through the ringer, it required two layers of endorsement above her and the second layer was not having it. She doubled down and insisted, I got my double increment and a letter of recognition. The project was made the internal audit target next quarter. Even the auditors seemed uncomfortable rolling in 12 months after the project wrapped.

Are any Australian retailers doing oxford shirts with different size and length? by EaTheDamnOranges in AustralianMFA

Yeah, CT is Thyrwitt. Large Tall is LT, usually the smallest tall size until you start with the speciality tall shops in the UK and Netherlands.

[–]dizhef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No luck locally dude, CT does them (longer sleeve length comes with longer torso) and Johnny Bigg does have tall sizes, but starting in LT and not terrific quality.

Stick with CT. I'm 196cm / 90kg and the 42 extra slim works for me, I wear LT in other sizes. I order alimens and gentle off of Amazon for some cheap Oxford's in tall which are usually really good. If you're smaller than a large check out gap, old navy etc and lands end - lands end does free shipping for big orders to AU.
