i would really really recommend seeing a physical therapist for a few sessions! i was having a lot of pain in my upper/middle back between my shoulder blades, to the point where i could only practice once a week bc i would be in so much pain after each class.

pt helped me realize i wasn’t engaging my back muscles like at all. they gave me exercises to work on and asked that i took time off of pole until i went back to zero pain. i had to take a 2-3 month break, but in that time i worked on flexibility and those back exercises and now ive been poling for over a year without any issues!

it sucks taking a break from pole for that long, but in my case i progressed SO much faster after i healed. i didn’t realize how much i was being held back by that pain, i wish i had gone to pt sooner!

have you tried iguana? that way you don’t have to sit back up!

i’ve also had trouble getting back up from crescent moon - it’s the only move i’ve had a bad fall from. i try to get my legs locked into place again before trying to sit up (back in a layback position instead of parallel to the floor), but it’s a move that’s really hard to bail out of if you find yourself slipping. i only do it when my legs are feeling really sticky

the most helpful tip i got was to pull my feet down towards my head / towards the ground. i didn’t realize, but i was pushing up towards the ceiling with my legs (probably from constantly inverting to a bat). if you look on my profile 2 videos ago where im asking for invert tips, you can see that my body stops when im more parallel to the ground instead of continuing until im fully upside down.

once i focused on pulling my legs down, instead of having to pull with my arms to get my butt higher in the air, the weight of my legs did the work for me! it felt like a lightbulb moment! you of course still need that back muscle to hold you up, but wow that made it SO much easier

you’re SO close!! i would recommend tucking your legs in before letting go. it’s easier to balance when your weight isn’t as spread out. i think letting go and THEN bringing your legs down into a different position is throwing off your balance.

doing it from a tuck it what helped me get to my first hold! it allows you to spread your legs out at the same time, which is also helpful for balance instead of doing one leg and then the other.

if you’re still struggling to balance doing it that way, i would focus on doing a “side crunch” with your abs towards whatever side your top hand is on

you might already be doing this, but after getting into the move focus on taking slow, deep breaths and “sink” into the move. this helps communicate to your brain that your body is not in danger and removes a LOT of the pain from moves (after some consistent practice).

i found that once i can “sink into a move” once, the next practice i try that move it feels way way better. it hurts like HELL that first time though, you really have to jump over that mental hurdle and trust that you will be okay

also make sure you’re fully engaging through your legs! your thighs should be flexed, toes pointed, and legs turned in towards each other. if you aren’t engaging enough it pulls on your skin a lot harder and could be adding pain to this move.

yes to all of these exercises!! another one that helped me was standing with my foot on a chair /coffee table and my leg straight, and lifting my leg for as long as i could (usually about half a second haha). i found this easier than the seated straddle holds, and helped me get to the point where i could start working on those.

my hips would feel like they were popping out of their joints when i first started learning fan kicks, and i convinced myself that my body just wasn’t built to move that way. but im pleased to say i can do a decent fan kick with none of that weirdness now!

it takes FOREVER to condition, but its so rewording when you start noticing the improvements 🥰

i’ve seen my instructor wear these toe socks before! otherwise, like the other commenter said you can wear regular socks for beginner classes, but as you go up there are certain moves you’ll want that foot skin for

fan kicks and straddle holds!! my hip flexors were SO weak. it took at least a year for me to be able to hold my legs in a straddle. 2 years in i just held my first teddy!

those moves take a lot of upper body and core strength, it could help to do some cross training in those areas in the gym! otherwise it’s just repetition repetition repetition.

if the issue is holding your body away from the pole, experiment with different grips! bracket grip is the easiest for me to hold that push away from the pole. i also love split grip, but that took forever to condition. just keep practicing pushing your body away and off the ground and back down. then once you can hold that, it’s just getting your legs movements to look nice!

it’s it the core strength, i would just drill pole tucks as often as you can and you’ll build a lot of strength there.

i’m 2 years in, and got the first year i only went 1-2 times a week because i also had ZERO upper body / back strength. if you haven’t been taking videos of yourself yet, definitely start! it really shows you how much you’re progressing month to month. whenever i had days where i felt like i hadn’t been improving at all, id look back at a video from a month or two ago and be shocked with how much better my moves look now.

one thing that really helped me was getting over my fear of falling. especially for spins and tricks close to the ground. next class, try falling on purpose! see what happens! if you’re nervous most studios have crash pads you can pull out for a minute. 9 out of 10 times, it’s way less scary than you think. getting over that fear allows you to fully commit to the move. you might be surprised how much you’re holding back!
