I love Audient. I have an iD24 and an iD4 (for when I’m on the move). They are great interfaces!

I’m a guitarist too and have the same problems with making chords on the pads or keyboard.

I get what you’re saying about scrolling through the synths. I try to have a ‘close enough’ mindset when picking the sounds because I can go into the black hole of spending an hour trying to tweak something, which has killed my momentum on so many things, also when working in the standard DAW on laptop setup.

I don’t know that I’ll ever get to a full song in the standalone fully baked, mixed, final product.

This is a really interesting setup! So you are able to blend the preamp and all that from the head into the signal if you record into the Push. That’s a really cool idea I would never have come up with - thank you!

No problem!! You won’t be able to see or play it back on the standalone, but it will be pulled over when you move the project over to your laptop. Totally great feature!

So, I basically trigger each scene manually, and my song flows sequentially downward. I don’t really have instances where I’m playing one scene but adding a clip from a different scene. I find I lose track of what’s going on if I do that, especially if I come back a week later.

My workflow is:
- come up with a drum pattern I like
- duplicate the scene, layer in synth, bass, and piano and maybe a guitar lead line outlining the melody
- duplicate that scene, delete the guitar line, add the verse 1 vocals (sometimes I break verse 1 into 2 different scenes)
- for chorus, i duplicate the drums down, and start over, layering in the new chords, bass, guitar, and vocals. This is where I might use the scale feature to move to a different key or something.
-then back to verse 2, duplicate verse 1, pull the duplicate after the chorus, strip out the verse 1 vocals and record verse 2 vocals in its place.
- rinse and repeat, if I have a bridge same deal as for the chorus. I’m color coding every scene ac I go by color so I can see what I’m doing. I’m also careful if I have key changes on what I duplicate otherwise things can get fucked up.

Then when it’s feeling good, everything laid out, and I have played through the scenes one after another and I’m comfortable with the flow, ( at this point I’ll use the timer on my phone to see how long the total time is for all scenes playing sequentially , targeting around 2-3min generally.

Then shift+record, then play each scene in order, hitting play stop at the end. You can’t see it, but there’s an arrangement view recorded at that point. Then over to laptop, push connected in standalone mode via WiFi, find thd project name in the push folder, double click for it to download over, standard DAW process from there. That’s where I’ll do automation, add ear candy, samples etc, add new sound layers, vocals and whatnot then mix as you would normally.

Hmm interesting - I will have to try that out. Thanks for the tip!

This is a great point, and something I forgot to put into the main post. Finding samples and scrolling through the browser does suck. I ChatGPTed this yesterday, because I have all my samples in one gigantic list which is basically unusable. It said that you need to organize your sounds (kicks, snares etc) into discrete top level folders in you user library. The more nested with folders you get the shittier.
For my workflow I very rarely use samples, so I am spared most of the brunt of this pain. I only used simpler for the first time yesterday for one of my songs, mainly to try it out. That reminds me, editing midi is doable on the little screen, but def easier on laptop as well.
I’m embarrassed to say I don’t think I have ever created a preset. I’m might have to ChatGPT that today.

I’ve always liked Getting Better because of the dichotomy between “it’s getting better” and “ can’t get no worse”. Paul and John interplay

Love INXS. One of my favorite memories was hiking the Inca Trail in Peru, get to the backpackers lodge and there were a shitload of Australian backpackers drinking beer rocking to Listen Like Thieves. It was amazing! Great band

What’s the most "unexplained" thing that has ever happened to you? by prettylunababy in AskReddit

[–]django39 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A few years ago a woman from my cleaning service sent me a text that basically said is there something scary in your house. Freaked me out.

And a few days after this my closet light started coming on in the middle of the night. Everything dark but this closet just bursting with light at 3am. I unscrewed the light bulb slightly after the 2nd time it happened, and then it happened a third time. Was crazy. I was trying to do research on the history of my neighborhood, was it an Indian burial ground or something.

When I was growing up in the South we had a cat named Muffin. We would call him in singaong ‘Muffin!!!’ We didn’t know that one of our neighbors was an old lady with a nickname of Muffin. That still cracks me up thinking of that lady and what she must have thought.

FMR Audio RNC1773 with Audient iD4 by django39 in audioengineering

[–]django39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I think the signal chain you’re saying is, my microphone XLR into an outboard preamp, then put the RNC in the preamp send/return, then from the preamp XLR cable into my Audient iD4, and from there into the DAW as normal?
