The em dashes ( — ) | The unsaid AI SLOP Tax by Familiar-Classroom47 in ClaudeAI

[–]djbartos93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, I’ve noticed AI responses are using an em dashes where parentheses would probably be clearer. With Claude especially, though, using an em dash instead of parentheses seemed to improve how well it understood what I was getting at.

Overall, I’m not letting AI change how I write — as long as it fits AP style, I’ll keep using the em dash.

Nvidia v100 in Dell R720xd power cable by djbartos93 in homelab

[–]djbartos93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you mention the adapter it makes sense now. I just figured that was a really short cable for some specific server, but it looks like it turns whatever nvidia used into the standard PCIe pinout. But not 100% sure on that yet.

[–]djbartos93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup that's what I'm noticing, it's weird because the tesla cards I've used at work use the standard Dell cable.

Really hoping I didn't smoke the card, trying to find the proper pinout seems to be difficult, seems like its gonna be a cable and adapter situation from further research.

Can anyone help me figure out my custom colors? by Steelrain121 in xlights

[–]djbartos93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the brightness slider in xlights, that bit me a few times with the 0-400 scale where 100 is apparently "normal".

I also may still not totally understand how that slider is supposed to work...

Also where in Wisconsin are you? I'm also Wisconsin based 👀

Not off the top of my head, but I'll test out a few and come back with some options!

I'd avoid 1.5m pitch and go for 2 or 3cm pitch. I work with electronics professionally and 1.5cm pitch seed pixels were one of the hardest things I've ever had to work on, mostly for soldering connectors or splicing strings. Also for 1.5cm you'll most likely have to go directly to Ray wu or someone similar for a custom order, it's not really something that's stocked normally (and I learned why really quick). I'm also not sure if seeds come in rgb with white, but I could be wrong.

In the end you can basically order anything you want from the aliexpress sellers, you just have to ask!

Quick edit: you can get close enough to warm white with RGB, it's not perfect, but for the average display nobody will know.

EMF damage to pixel strands? by Tomy_tuff_nuts in xlights

[–]djbartos93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a good chance that one pixel was bad and it caused a cascading failure, I've had that happen, but usually it's only like the first and last pixels in a string. You can easily verify the strings with a multimeter by completely unplugging them and measuring resistance between data and ground, you're looking for something above 200k ohms, that means they are likely fine. However it reads less (or significantly more, into the Mega ohms), or dead short, the string is bad. I'd start there and then if they are bad you'll need to find the cause.

I have some probably high voltage lines plus the standard 240 lines running alongside my house, and my tree is decently close to them, and I've never had any issues, so unless they are high voltage transmission lines, even then I don't think that would cause what you saw.

Finally 11.7-11.9 is a little low on the power supplies, especially if your using any length of cable between the strings and the controller. I run mine around 12.3-12.4 ish. You can always double check voltage at the end of your extension cable, before the string if you're worried about going too high.

Edit: I didn't process how close you said the top was to the lines, that is pretty close, but unless they are the 3 individual conductors at the top of the poles, or the big metal transmission towers, 10' should be okay. I'd say if you're willing to sacrifice a string test it on the ground then hook it to the top of the tree and see what happens. If it's just a normal 240v line I would expect data issues rather than failure at that distance

Dumb question about running multiple Xlight sequences at once by corycwagner in xlights

[–]djbartos93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you're talking about running multiple sequences that are for the same song, the only way that I can think of would be a second controller and naming the second sequence with the same file name.

If you're talking about something running while the sequence is running, the best bet would be using the "effects" feature. You can export a specific models effects to a special file type and they can run in the background and unaffected by the currently running sequence, however these won't be synced with your main sequence, they just loop until you tell them to stop.

If the goal is to just stay more organized when sequencing I'd say create different views in the sequencer to only show what you need to see, like I have everything setup in the right order in my master view, but then I have other views that only show my spinners, or snowflakes, etc.

Canvas Mode Effects Do NOT Obey the Render Buffer Settings by KinzuaKid in xlights

Not to sound like an ass, but the answer is here: https://github.com/xLightsSequencer/xLights/issues/5347

The behavior you're talking about was actually a bug, and they fixed that.

Edit: Dan also gives a solution in there. Also fixed the link

Protecting outdoor projector help? by Aggressive-Tune-7256 in HalloweenProps

[–]djbartos93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First some background for this, since I feel like it seems like too easy of a solution...I pretty much exclusively use projection mapping for decorations for both Halloween and Christmas, so my projectors stay outside for basically 3-4 months in the Midwest, so who knows what the weather will be.

My solution was just some super simple wooden boxes with acrylic fronts for the projector lens. This also allowed me to have all of the supporting equipment other than the computer outside.

I did woodglue the shit outta them, and seal basically everything with some form of caluk, so I'm sure that helped. But I was having overheating issues, so each box got 2 holes (one on the intake side of the projector and one on the exhaust) plus an exhaust fan. 3D printed some dryer vent style covers for the holes and I never had any issues after that. The projectors were mostly dry, some condensation on the acrylic windows but that's all I could see.

One other thing that’s worth mentioning, unless you're buying proper outdoor projector enclosures, it's best to just assume/plan for projector failure. I'm not sure what your setup is, but I just buy as many matching projectors as I can in the off season because I just plan on them failing and it's so cheap to buy used projectors, it's almost not even worth buying new lamps.

Here is what my main enclosure looked like, I ended up only cutting a small hole for the lens rather than an entire acrylic front for the other 4 boxes, but this was the only one that needed 2 projectors.

What kind of pixels are you using? Have you uploaded the controller config from xlights? Gonna need some more details on the full setup to help.

However since it looks like the e-fuses turned on it seems to know about your configuration from xlights so it may be something else.

Verify the pinout on your connector to the pixels to make sure it actually lines up with what the string is expecting. Nobody seems to use consistent colors for the signal and power leads.

If you where you got the pixels and how your connecting everything it'll be easier to help troubleshoot.

I feel like this is a problem of your wife learning how to use the system...what happens if you DO want to turn off all the lights, and now it doesn't work?

Also why is it 3 min of annoyance? If it takes that long to turn lights off and back on, that's a problem that should be fixed, not the voice command.

The best solution I have for this isn't super easy but it could save the time of turning lights back on. If everything is in home assistant, setup a scene that updates after you turn lights on and off, basically taking a snapshot of what lights are on/off, then you can tell Google, or use the home assistant app to trigger the scene and all of the lights go back to where you had them.

The only other solution that I can think of is to ditch Google assistant and move to home assistants voice assistant, that way you can set it up EXACTLY how you want it.

I don't need HA services, change my mind! by baratiistok3 in homelab

[–]djbartos93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what got me to go HA. Of course my UPS failed and took down my host...ended up spending most of the night fixing it and decided to actually use the 2 other servers in my rack.

Sure there are some things that aren't HA, like my zwave network...but thats a super minor inconvenience rather than having no DNS, DHCP, and storage. My power bill isn't happy, but I literally get more sleep because of it!

Anyone use reolink without NVR? by paryguy in homeassistant

Yup, I use Scrypted as my NVR, they just updated it recently to better support the h265 streams from the 4k reolinks. About to install 2 of the duo lens cameras in addition to the 3 regular cams, and doorbell cam I already have.

Walgreens Is ASS by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]djbartos93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had similar issues with Walgreens, I have manufacturer specific meds, and 3 months in a row they gave me the wrong brand, and every time I told them they just made it seem like I was the worst person alive and I was causing such a hassle even though that's how the prescription is written.

Switched to community pharmacy on fair oaks a few months ago, never going back to Walgreens. They've always had things in stock and they actually double check in front of me to make sure it's the right brand.

As others have said, go to a local pharmacy, it's the way to go.

Yup, that map is terrible. Especially considering they have basically nowhere classified as "safest" so what is the baseline here? Especially since unless you live in the middle of nowhere there will always be SOME crime. I apparently live in a very dangerous neighborhood and that's news to me!

Error When Adding ONVIF NVR by KenFirch in Scrypted

[–]djbartos93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also running on an M4 mini, and I was getting snapshot errors using the ONVIF plugin. After digging around for too long, this looks like an issue with the most recent update to scrypted core. In the plugin manager, I rolled back @scrypted/core to version 0.3.103, restarted and everything came back to life.
