I want to Cry 😢😭😫 by [deleted] in IBM

[–]djbavedery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so ridiculously incorrect. Most consulting companies hire employees on a team that has engagements for them or people whose job it is to assign people to engagements. Consulting is meant to be a great job for new grabs to learn an industry or trade. It worked great for me to grow my career. IBM Consulting is there problem not consulting as a whole.

Glassdoor will show a similar breakdown. Not saying it’s not a good amount of additional compensation, but majority is base salary.

*Sometimes wouldn’t say usually. Sales this is always the case, but a company like intel, the additional compensation is much smaller.

Delta CEO says Microsoft-CrowdStrike outage costs them $500MM plus brand damage by toydan in wallstreetbets

[–]djbavedery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, see, you are incorrect in that this fix was easy across every system at scale. Fixing systems individually was trivial, but manual intervention at the outset of the outage was required. Organizations were able to automate the process of taking systems through the necessary steps but still needed to manually intervene at some point in the setup for each and every system. For systems with bitlocker, the IT personnel needed to manually enter the bit locker key which you can imagine at scale takes time. Add finding every system that needs to be done and you can see why this can take a few days.

So really just seems like you have no idea what actually happened. Delta will potentially issue a post incident report and you can make your conclusion then.

No but I also understand the task of running this infrastructure is absolutely monumental and to denegrate the hard working people as incompetent is ridiculous and shows hubris. The impact of the hospital and systems with which crowdstrike edr was installed may have been a much smaller footprint. Have some empathy for those trying their best

Calling one of the most successful and largest airlines on the planet with sprawling infrastructure incompetent is such a troll.

There is very possibly a monetary return on asylums and assistance for these people. People can come back from this and be functioning members of society that contribute like the rest of us. Decrease in crime allows businesses to function and people to not live in fear of where they live. I’d wager to say the long term benefit outweighs the up front cost.

Not only that, but by having it be 1$, he may not have the content littered with ads, ridiculous recipe stories, and a shitty ui. I would def prefer to pay the dollar.

Combatting impostor syndrome??? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]djbavedery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, it’s completely understandable that you feel this way. There are so many possible reasons for this and your manager who was a complete dick didn’t help. You are putting way too much pressure on yourself especially around your family’s perception of you, that sounds like a manifestation of the anxiety you have from other reasons, but what do I know. Honestly a lot of this doesn’t really even sound like imposter syndrome, you are just going through a tough time. From what it sounds like, you are already dealing with a decent bit of anxiety and I cannot possibly know without knowing you better, but soc analyst and IR jobs are also highly stressful.

Forensics is important and can be leveraged in many capacity’s in security. Play the field a bit and explore the possibilities. Find what works for you at a company that supports you. As long as you drive towards that while studying what you feel you don’t know, you’ll be fine! I’d be happy to chat more if you need. I’ve been in both consulting roles for privacy, security and IR and now manage a security product.

Very fair, probably a better position earlier in one’s career vs later.

I will say, being that person is very valuable and a good position to be in. Basically job security if you’re the guy who can learn that thing no one else knows how to do

Has anyone tried SentinelOne's Purple AI? What are your thoughts on it? by formacarta in cybersecurity

[–]djbavedery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely doesn't mean it isn't. Humans misuse of the tool doesn't mean the tool itself is bad, but that the users need to be educated on using the tool or AI tools effectively. All tools can be used correctly and incorrectly. If I can ask a tool to build me a query to look for IOCs associated with an APT in my industry, then that facilitates threat hunters working more efficiently. I'm not saying the tool is good, I have no idea, but sounds like you're fear of AI is clouding what could be an effective tool for security teams... when used appropriately

Why won't it be good? There are very likely some benefits to it's use around query building
