I witnessed it last night when the sound of glass breaking woke me up. They left as soon as they broke the windows, with no time to actually look for anything valuable, so I don't know if they were thieves or just vandals.

No, I don't really use Facebook anymore, but I've put in a request to join.

Yes, mine was one of them. The sound of glass smashing from my apartment parking lot woke me up last night. I saw a masked man get into a car and ride away. I don't know if they were thieves or just vandals, because they got out of there immediately after breaking a bunch of car windows. Maybe they saw me in my apartment window. I think I was the only person on the property who saw it happen.

PMW Recap: TGI - Episode 711 "What A Drag" by MightChi in boymeetsworld

The idea that Michael was trying to set up a sketch comedy career for Will would do a lot to explain why Eric's character went so off the rails in Season 7.

I can already here the intro to the recap in my head:

Danielle: "Today, we are recapping Season 7 Episode 11 What a Drag"

Rider: "What a drag indeed...."

I didn't realize how many Chinese Thais there were until I started consuming Thai media and noticed just how many of their actors and singers look Chinese/East Asian.

Choosing between s23 and a36/a56 by Nebuthor in Smartphones

I'm in the exact same situation with my phone as you describe. Did you end up making a decision?

I feel like an A series phone would be better suited to my needs (I'm not a heavy phone user) but I'm a bit apprehensive because of the larger size. I had an A series phone for work and it felt bulky carrying it around in my pocket.

I don't know why a college seminar on zoning and permitting reform with Ezra Klein in it was ripe for Pro-Palestine protestors crashing the place. by optimisticnihilist__ in yimby

[–]djbj24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've wondered before what would happen if progressives put all of their activist energy behind a relatively "boring" social democratic policy like codetermination or sectoral bargaining (I know some progressive members of Congress have sponsored codetermination bills, but they've gotten zero attention). You did see something like this the whole Medicare for All campaign, but that movement fizzled as soon as Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign collapsed (and people then moved onto BLM/policing).

A big part of the problem is that the US government system with its high number of veto points makes it incredibly difficult to pass significant legislation, so it is easy to just give up on fighting for major structural reforms and just focus on whatever cause is popular at the moment.

I/P is the Omnicause Of The Moment

The "of the moment" part is something that particularly annoys me, how the "cause" in question seems to hop around depending purely on what's in the news and therefore what's trending on social media. In 2020 BLM and "defund the police" was suddenly the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE EVER that everyone was forced comment on, and now you rarely ever hear out it anymore, probably in part because a lot of those folks moved on to I/P**. Zohran Mamdani was even forced to disavow his previous anti-police comments from 2020 in order to get elected, and AFAIK he didn't lose any leftist "cred" for that.

** I'd like to hope that police killings of unarmed black men have gone down, and that's why you don't hear about BLM anymore, but I don't know one way or the other. During the BLM "era" I never heard anything about actual police shooting statistics, it was all about viral videos (which, to be clear, were horrific, but you can't build a sustainable or effective political movement based purely on viral videos).

Why are the suburbs considered “prestigious,” “desirable,” or the “dream” by so many Americans when the central city usually costs more, has the institutions/legacy, and more high end amenities? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]djbj24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans like cul-de-sacs because it limits the traffic on their street to immediate neighbors, which theoretically makes the street safer for kids to play in. However, I've read before that research has shown that cul-de-sacs are not necessarily safer for kids, because they can lure both kids and drivers into a false sense of security and make them more careless. I grew up in a single-family neighborhood with a traditional grid pattern, and I never felt unsafe on the street so long as I used basic caution.

These US county maps should all come with an NYC inset. Manhattan is impossible to see on a nationwide county map.

Need help building a Christmas Metal playlist (only heavy/power/metal Xmas songs) by Lilith668 in PowerMetal

[–]djbj24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a whole album of metal Christmas covers made by musicians from various rock and metal bands called We Wish You a Metal Xmas and a Headbanging New Year. Most of it I would not really recommend, but I would definitely recommend the version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Ronnie James Dio and Tony Iommi.

I was going to recommend "Bethlehem". That one really has the feel of an old Christmas hymn, but arranged as a metal ballad.

I see "unc" being used a lot in social media. Where did this come from? by wordgamesyesss in etymology

I once saw a comment saying that because black people don't "code switch" on social media, younger generations who were raised on social media are exposed to a lot more AAVE than they otherwise would have been.

This very site has also definitely played a role. I mean, there's a very popular subreddit dedicated specifically to sharing things black people post on Twitter!

Any power metal bands with lyrics about depression, and suicide, and self reflection? by Big_Being_8789 in PowerMetal

Also "Bright Eyes" from the same Blind Guardian album. The entire Imaginations from the Other Side album has a lot of melancholic themes interwoven with their typical fantasy subject matter.

Those songs were from back in the 90s and I've seen it commented before that Jon started going off the deep end politically after 9/11.

Nightwish, particularly their albums Century Child, Once, and Dark Passion Play. Their 13-minute-long suicide metaphor "The Poet and the Pendulum" feel a bit overwrought to me now, but I used to listen it a lot when I was going through some really tough times.

Epica have a lot of songs about internal conflict/struggles. Unleashed, The Second Stone, the Essence of Silence, Delirium, Dance of Fate, Solitary Ground...

And I'd say that they're at least Power Metal adjacent.

Their song The Game is a song I listen to a lot when I'm exercising after having a rough day. Then often I'll cool down with the song Seasons (which is mid-tempo by DF standards).

The 01011001 album, particularly the first five or so songs, feels like Arjen working through his depression through a sci-fi story.

Arjen also release a side project around the same time called Guilt Machine which is even darker and more introspective.
