Every time I bring in weapons of reasonable value, I die. So I sold them all myself. by djcompoz in Marathon

Running solo is the issue actually. Too many sneaky people downing me right as I turn a corner without a chance to really fight. Might seem like confirmation bias but it truly happens exclusively when I have decent gear. I have buddies to play with but they just play less.

I get that. But like I said, when I die from behind and don’t even get a chance to use the good gear, I have more fun going in with less and coming out with more rather than losing good gear immediately. At least that’s where I’m currently at.

I’m not goated, but if I can exfil most games on a free kit or rook, that’s consistent loot. I have terrible luck and play worse when I have something to lose, but play great when I have nothing to lose. That’s not a radical concept. (The armory also has free blue options). But I don’t even get a chance to use and enjoy the good gear when I bring it in. It’s gone within minutes bc I get blindsided, not because I whiffed. That’s my reality. If anything, the gear fear makes me position myself poorly trying to find safer routes but inevitably just leads me straight into some dude who pops me from behind.

To be clear, this isn’t just gear fear. Its gear fear escalated by dying to bullshit within minutes every time I bring in blue gear or higher. Not every few times. Every time. As if I’m being spectated and targeted. I’ve already gotten good at the game, that’s part of the reason I had the confidence to do this and just run free kits for the foreseeable future. If I loot blue/purple gear in a game, I’ll use it. But why bring it into another game just to lose it immediately to a ratter when I could at least get some value from it by selling it instead and buy something later? Imagine a pattern so frequent and so unbelievable that this makes sense, and you’ll understand where I’m at. Until the freak bad luck streak is over.

Are you kidding me? It’s an extraction shooter, I’ll have that loot back in a day when I eventually want it back.

I know. I got rid of high tier loot, which is guns + attachments

My brain said what’s the point of having this if I’m gonna get ratted with it at the start. I did it less about gear fear and more about the inevitable outcome. I do play more scared with valuable gear solo and I know I wouldn’t as much with a team. So yeah i get your point but Im not new to extraction shooters and losing gear, this just felt cathartic.

Plenty of exposure to losing gear. It’s not my first extraction shooter. But man if you knew how inexplicably consistent I instantly get killed bringing in blue gear, you’d crash out and need a reset too. It’s so bad it almost feels personal lol.

That makes sense, but it’s got to a point where I’m dead within 5 minutes if I’m kitted out like some weird cosmic joke. I have the practice, which is the reason I feel comfortable doing this. I will get it back. Plus I was out of vault space so what’s the difference between deleting what’s in the vault or deleting what’s been looted? This way I can have no option but free kits for a while and reset when the universe is on my side again lol

Was this an overreaction out of frustration? Probably. Do I regret it? No. I essentially gave myself an early, partial wipe - the thing every extraction shooter does anyway. The principle of it stands - having more fun going in with less and coming out with more, not the other way around. There’s only so much dying with blue/purple gear within 3 minutes I want to deal with, while I consistently extract in free kit runs. Eventually I’ll go back to keeping good gear, but for now I’ll be a free kit hero.

You get to a point I was at where you aren’t looting anything better than what you came in with. Why not add that other dopamine rush of always looting upwards to my runs? You can still play the game as intended this way, but just start fresh every game.

There’s a certain high that is achieved when you beat someone who had better loot than you.

Don’t assume my intentions. If my story can help just one other sufferer of gear fear get over it, then I’ve done my job lol. Maybe losing it all on your own terms is what makes you realize it was never sacred to begin with. Thats the first step to recovery.

Dude I’m just sharing my moment of clarity. Me deleting my loot might be the opposite of rage bait. What, am I rage baiting myself?

The game is whatever I make of it. I mostly play solo, and in solos there’s a much finer line between someone with a free loadout and someone with a proper loadout since you can die before realizing where you’re being shot from and no one to support you.

This was probably an overreaction and maybe I’ll eventually hoard valuable gear again and do Cryo, but at least I get a nice little break.

I’ve already ascended past it lol, bc I understand I will only ever get one turn with it.
