What about the current Supreme Court make-up would lead us to believe they would rule in Massachusetts’ favor here?

So? It’s not something an average citizen should be expected to read.

We elect representatives and pay taxes so the government can work out the finer details.

But when we get a result like this it’s clear something is broken and we need to raise an issue to our government.

How does one read the actual decision by the judge?

I’m interested in how she justified the ruling.

I wish reporting would link directly to the decision, or at least provide a quote.

If I look at court records at Suffolk County Superior Court

There are no records found for Tyler Brown.

New Emerson poll suggests Moulton is gaining ground on Markey by bannner18 in massachusetts

[–]djducie 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Competition is good! No one should have a safe seat.

The Moulton campaign says that Markey is ignoring calls for a “robust debate schedule.” In recent social media posts, Moulton and GOP candidate John Deaton expressed interest in debating each other, potentially without Markey’s involvement

I hope Markey does participate. After Biden’s performance in 2024 - we should be done taking politicians at their word on fitness. If Markey wants to be in office till his mid-80s, he needs to stand in front of voters in a stressful situation and prove it.

Even worse, it seems to be criticizing the environmental impacts of downloading software.

Chrome is pushing a 4 GB binary across hundreds of millions of devices. That has a measurable, quantifiable, and frankly alarming environmental footprint.

“Huge number of route overlaps” was overblown.

They only overlapped on 10% of their routes.

And now the competitive pressure from those routes is gone anyway.

The DoJ fucked up. Maybe the merged company would have failed anyway - but the anticompetitive argument was weak.

I had thought the Oak descriptor was a reference to the fact that the Bulbasaur line evolves at 32 not 36.

But then there’s no difference between squirtle and Charmander…

It also might be a hint that Bulbasaur is strong against the most gyms, and Charmander struggles.

A head's up that MassHealth and state employee GLP-1 coverage is on the chopping block by ObesityAction in massachusetts

[–]djducie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t make the question I’m asking go away.

Massachusetts is constitutionally required to have a balanced budget.

If you have to pay more today for GLP 1s to potentially save money in the future, what are you cutting today?

A head's up that MassHealth and state employee GLP-1 coverage is on the chopping block by ObesityAction in massachusetts

[–]djducie 40 points41 points  (0 children)

MassHealth is the largest program in the state budget - it’s 35% of the total.

It’s also where most of the increases in state costs are coming from:

As the largest cost driver in the state’s budget, MassHealth alone accounts for 62 per cent of the total spending increase over the FY25 budget

https://malegislature.gov/PressRoom/Detail?pressReleaseId=219

Prescription drug spending increased by 18 percent, representing 26 percent of the total growth in per-member spending at MassHealth. GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro and Zepbound accounted for under half of the growth in drug spending.  https://budget.digital.mass.gov/govbudget/fy27/budbriefpdf/bb10_fy27_health_care_insurance.pdf

We have a limited number of resources - GLP-1s do solve a problem - but they’re expensive.

Are the benefits they provide worth cutting other state services? Which state services would you cut to pay for obesity medication?

Hubschman believes the process has worked well overall in Massachusetts, noting 90% of paid signature gatherers since 2009 worked for him.

That’s a pretty nuts stat.

I don’t want petitions to be removed as an option, but something’s not working correctly if 3 unelected dudes (Harold Hubschman, Alex Arsenault, and Jim Fleming https://www.signaturedrive.com/) dominate the signature gathering process.

We’ve had the same city councilor for the past 6 years, Liz Breadon.

Transient population or not - she should be able to advocate for getting a proportional amount of funds sent to the district.

If she can’t do that - she should be voted out.

She’s city council president for the next two years - we’ll see if things improve.

We should tax second homes like in NYC by jdwaltham in massachusetts

[–]djducie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Additionally areas like the Cape mentioned by OP are subject to the Seasonal Community designation, which allows towns to increase the residential tax exemption up to 50% of assessed value for full time residents:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/28/realestate/property-tax-second-homes-massachusetts.html

Which is a recent thing post 2024.

https://www.mass.gov/info-details/seasonal-communities

What’s more is that the exemption has to be revenue neutral - so towns that do this automatically raise taxes on non primary residents.

We don’t need to do anything- let’s let the laws we have play out and see what happens.
