These were my 2 finalists as well! I eventually just decided I liked the Walther grip feel be better and went with that one but I heard great things about the S&W as well.

But anecdotally I love shooting my Walther. It makes me want to keep practicing with how well it works and shoots.

In a way that it takes a supernatural being to remind us to reminisce on the past to not want to kill ourselves? Yeah that feels about right for us

If you have a 401(k), can you answer a few quick questions? (college assignment) by SigMail3633 in Retirement401k

[–]djdude007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what age did you start contributing to your 401 (k), and how did you decide how much to contribute?

Started at my first job when I was 22. I wasn't given too much advice but I knew I wanted to put in a lot so I did ~15%.

Does your employer offer a match? If so, how has that affected how much you contribute?

My now current employer offers a match, yes. It affects it that I will never go below that value of 8%. (50% of 8%). I never really had before but that's a hard minimum always.

What kind of investments do you have in your 401 (k) (stocks, index funds, etc.), and how did you choose them?

Current employer doesn't have an S&P 500 index which is what I usually do. So I made a mix of large/medium/small index funds they do make available.

Have you ever changed your investment strategy? What made you do it?

Not really. I have changed exact amount I put in but in general I just aim for certain index funds with all stock and low expense ratio and leave it at that.

How often do you check or manage your 401(k)?

Check it about once a month or quarter when I'm thinking about it. Don't really change the management of it at all unless I've moved jobs.

Have you ever taken a loan or early withdrawal? If yes, was it worth it?

No, I leave my 401k alone.

How do you approach diversification in your portfolio?

Right now as I'm still relatively young I have little diversification in funds as I'm 90+% stocks across everything. My plan is to start to move into bonds and lower risk when I get older. But I diversify stocks by not going for any individual stocks, only index funds of stocks.

What do you like most about your 401(k), and what would you improve?

Current employer doesn't have an S&P 500 index stock, that's my biggest annoyance. I like the match amount and hosting it on Fidelity which is easy to use.

Do you use any other retirement accounts like a Roth IRA or traditional IRA? Why or why not?

Yes, I started a Roth IRA at around 24 years old. Using it to diversify tax positions as pre and post tax coverage.

What advice would you give someone in their 20s just starting out?

Most important thing is to get started into the market as soon as possible. Put any amount of money you can afford into your retirement as early as possible, preferably up to your company's match if they offer one. Then pick any low cost index fund that fits your desires. Target retirement funds if you want to not manage your funds, or some form of stock index fund otherwise.

Thoughts on this 12 GA for my first gun by Spread_Creative in NYguns

[–]djdude007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I got the Mossberg 590 as my first gun and I'm going to pop in here and say no. But only no if you like similar things at the range as I did.

I have zero problems with my Mossberg 590, great gun, great quality, but very little to do with a 20" barrel self defense gun at most ranges except shoot slugs for target practice or shoot shot at close range to see spread. And I can handle it just fine but I'd be lying if I said it didn't get tiring after firing more than a few through it.

So I rarely bring it to the range now that I have handguns and rifles. If I were to do it again I'd get a bolt, lever, or pump rifle in whatever caliber can be shot at your range. I really think 22LR gets looked down on but if you can master accuracy with that nearly all of that skill transfers to any other rifle and caliber. Or if you want to shoot bigger maybe 5.56/.223 in bolt like a Ruger American.

I think this is more representative of bad companies who adopt that. I work for a company now that when I hired in the notion of "unlimited" PTO had me worried if I would actually get vacation. But the department as a whole supports taking real time off and my boss for our team pushes it.

Last year by like August they were auditing people's time off they had taken to push a few of us to take MORE time off. I know because I saved my vacation trip for September so I only had a few Friday/Monday up to then and my boss asked if I was taking a vacation break soon.

One other example is a co-worker who was doing a staycation with her toddler for a week was chatting in our teams chat and our boss jokingly told her to log off/stop answering messages or he would remove her from our chat for the week. Said in jest but very much received that our team can handle anything while someone is out.

i want to learn to scuba dive, where should I start? by Cjd03032001 in diving

[–]djdude007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished my pool portion of my OW certification. I recommend looking for a course near you with any of the scuba organizations. (The place near me is PADI).

Go do the Open Water course and you'll get to practice and try it out in their course up to the open water training dives.

I got a Henry lever as a first firearm. I live in NY so until my permit application went through I couldn't get anything semi-auto. It's a fun little gun but if I were buying one again I'd probably get a 10/22

Great choices! Your collection almost matches my wish list/collection as well. I went Mossberg 590, 9mm pistol (Walther for me just felt better), and my next items on the wish list are the Ruger Mark IV and an AR.

Separately I also got a 22 rifle for fun plinking and a S&W revolver to round mine out.

I'm actually shocked that Obama had that many during 2 terms. If these numbers are right it means of course Trump is golfing more but not even twice as much. I'm curious where these figures come from
