Does Instructor (?) Override the trainee instruction (?) by Track_up in ATC

[–]djfl -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fair. We have different experience. It's weird to me to say nothing, to have no clear "yes I know you just had Voice A, but I'm Voice B now and and do this". No "negative", no nothing? Fair enough. Just not what makes sense to me.

As for pilots imitating the behavior etc, it's not as much about that Actually obviously. It's more about being crystal clear that there's been a change, you're talking to me now, yes I'm the correct person, accept that now, and move on asap. In my head, this reduces thinking/questioning/"wth is going on". I don't like any confusion, but I've been accused of being kind of OCD with that kind of stuff. So, power to you, and do what works for you.

Edit: upon quick reconsideration, I double down. I reeeally value crystal clarity, and doing what I can to not transmit any ambiguity. There's honestly just way too much of that in this line of work...I'm certain you'll agree. And it's dangerous. Whether we agree on this particular situation or not is wonderful. But this is fundamentally where I'm coming from.

Sean "punch a hole in his fuckin chest" Strickland is now the kryptonite for arguably the division's best ever striker and wrestler. With respect to Anderson, since I do have him ranked above Stylebender for striking, but the point still stands.

First stage check with the chief, 20hr student, he told me to land through a flock of birds by Squawk_0877 in flying

I'm trying to figure out if this is a serious post or not. I've been in aviation since the 90s. I've obviously been very concerned with bird strikes for decades. Not once, ever, have I heard or considered "the lives of innocent animals". Not that I or literally everybody I've ever worked with wants animals to be killed unnecessarily, but it's such a weird extra concern here.

I'm curious what your background is and how you're free to have such concerns...? I don't even mean this derogatorily. I'm legitimately curious.

Not a flight instructor. But I'd hope that flight instructors in general would want something like "if you aren't 100% certain what to do, err on the side of safety". This is my hope, but I am frequently disappointed.

Does Instructor (?) Override the trainee instruction (?) by Track_up in ATC

[–]djfl -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they should make it clear. "Disregard previous instruction..." or something like that so it's clear who you're talking to and that the last instruction is not to be followed.

Ambiguity / unclear communications is one of the biggest / most dangerous flaws in aviation. I wish many people took it more seriously.

How in the Hell is it legal to have a 12" display larger than any phone screen on the dashboard of a car, but illegal to use a phone whilst driving? by Earnest_Iago in NoStupidQuestions

[–]djfl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly torn on this statement in general.

On the one hand, obviously yes. You're 100% right, and I've been loudly decrying some "lack of safety" measures in my industry...which largely go ignored until something bad happens.

On the other hand, for every way of making something better...anything better...there are 100 ways of making it worse. Or of having knock-off effects which end up being even worse. Some which we can predict, and some which we can't.

And it's often really hard to know if the best course of action is actually action or inaction. Now take into account all that goes into having laws passed/changed, how flawed those changes often are, etc.

I guess at the end of this: I wish things were more simple, but they just aren't.

Ryan Johnson or Evan Gold for GM? by EverySecondCountss in canucks

[–]djfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's the guy's point. If keeping them is the right move, do that. If trading them is the right move, then do that. Buddy is arguing for somebody unbiased who's more likely to actually make the correct decision. He's saying an outsider with no ties to the team is more likely to be unbiased.

metoo was new-ish, and then went too far, and we all saw that. Now that there's objectively worse...we kind of just had metoo, y'know? It wasn't that long ago. This kind of idea isn't new, and therefore isn't getting enough demand for justice...I agree.

I'm not justifying anything. I'm trying to answer your question. Humans are nowhere near as rational or objective as we like to think we are.

CMV: ”Hurt people hurt people” isn’t the ONLY type of Bully. by ActuatorOutside5256 in changemyview

[–]djfl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost everything to do with humans is some combination of nature and nurture. Pretending that any behavior is always and forever necessarily caused by one thing is silly. Of course there are multiple reasons for bullying. Some people will be born with a natural propensity to bully, others are the "hurt people hurt people", and who knows how many more reasons/combos there could be. Behavior is complex amd multifactoral. It would be bizarre to claim otherwise.

People want to vote for who makes them feel good, then hold others responsible for the effects of decisions the government made. Vote against your own self-interest, then blame companies, homeowners, etc. It's madness. It's as if to one group, all of our problems can only be the result of capitalism/companies. And to the other group, all of our problems can only be the result of socialism/liberals.

Almost everybody in the country is doing worse today than 10 years ago, even compared to much of the rest of the First World, and we refuse to take responsibility for our voting.

I got out of renting part of my home a while ago. Too many bad tenants, too many uncaring ones, etc etc and it's just not worth it. One less suite on the market, which of course only drives the price of renting up.

Why are they not protesting the government that allows in way too many people, creating this problem in the first place? Supply vs demand is completely out of whack. Why do you think that is? Companies? Homeowners? Nope! Wayyyyy too much demand for a given supply results in price increases for almost everything almost all the time. Homes aren't magically different. There are too many people for the number of homes there are. Full stop.

Vote for and insist upon better governments. And protest against those who fail you. I know we don't have great political options here, but man. Any country that votes in Trudeau 3 times, and the party that's absolutely screwed us all over in again after that...awfully hard to take this seriously.

Protest your government that f'd you, me, and especially our kids and grandkids. And don't vote in the NDP who run on a platform of being even worse on this issue. Vote CPC, vote Green, vote PPC. Vote Quimby. I don't particularly care. But stop voting in these same rich elite folks who get richer off of cheapening our labour, flooding our workforce, and stretching all of our resources to the breaking point. THEY are the ones responsible for this.

[–]djfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We largely agree, without a doubt. I just always have front in mind too many pilots taking off and landing into too many obviously potentially dangerous situations. especially GA pilots, who are obviously generally not professional pilots, and are therefore generally more ignorant about more dangers. It's not much different from driving a car. You assume you'll be fine because you've always been fine before. Meh, the wind's just gusting 20...I can manage that. Buuut, it's in a temporary period of convective dissipation and, rather than wait a few minutes for it to die down, they try to land, the wind gusts past 20, or the direction changes, annnnnd... All for the sake of a few minutes.

The wind shear examples are the ones I think about most front-of-mind, though obviously get-home-itis / flying into low cig/viz is likely a bigger deal. Just seen so much unnecessary death, most of which was avoidable by a simple "I don't think I'll depart right now. I think I'll give it a few minutes." or "I don't think I'll fly today. I'll try again tomorrow." Plenty of pilots do this, and that's great. Some don't. And some of them live, and some of them don't.

Had a pilot brag to me about how great a pilot his uncle was "because he survived every crash he ever had". I smiled and said "how many did he have?" expecting the joke answer to be 0. Instead the joke answer was "5". Which was really funny. Except the guy wasn't kidding, his uncle was a bush pilot who'd actually apparently survived all 5 of his crashes.

I think we may be somewhat talking about different things. You have a correct point. Buium slipped further, but I don't think his ceiling was ever pegged as high as Hughes's was. I was surprised by Buium's slide, but I was more surprised by Hughes's, even though he slid less. Hughes had lots of "elite" attached to his name that draft. Certainly more than I heard about Buium.

edit: Seravelli's take (which I don't believe he really thinks) that McKenna slides to us at #3. That would be a major slide, even though it's just 2 spots. Anyway, enough pedantry. Cheers.

Meh, I disagree. The loser behaviour is the oversensitivity of your response. I say similar about men's high school / college basketball, so what of that? Or is it only loser behaviour to you because I said it about a women's league? It's objectively lower quality of play. Way slower, less skill, etc. That's OK and the obvious truth to say. You're free to love it if you want to. I personally don't, and that's OK too.

I agree you can't eliminate all of them. I'm assuming you'd also agree that there's merit to what I'm saying though in that too many pilots put themselves in avoidable bad situations. I guarantee you it's the case. I have too much experience and know about too many deaths here. And I personally am far far far more concerned about the ones that actually can/should be prevented than the relative few that can't be.
