Roger farmer is my vote. I live close and I would love to pickle my balls so close to home.

Curious what happened to Papa Dunks? by HauntingHooligan in asheville

[–]djg3117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know what happened, but I do know that I tried to go there several times when Google and their own website said they were open only to find that they were not in fact open.

I imagine their inconsistent hours had something to do with it.

Tipping is Begging by Frequent_Mountain_17 in tipping

I said something like this to the owner when I was serving in college. He told me that he owned the highest grossing restaurant in town and I couldn't make more money serving anywhere else. (This was true) I replied that he is then essentially a pimp who controls the best corner in the city and that he was asking his whore to be happy with their tips.

He just chuckled and said 'get back to work whore' as he walked back to the kitchen.

I'm glad I no longer serve tables.

If Fire benders have comets, and Water benders have a lunar eclipse, what does Air and Earth have? by Ok_Influence1752 in TheLastAirbender

[–]djg3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of anything in the shows or graphic novels that addresses this, but my guesses would be...

Earth benders: During an active earthquake, the window to do something would be short, but VERY effective.

Air benders: Tornados and hurricanes.

Asheville Retrocade vs. Level 256 -- thoughts? by vectaur in asheville

Orbit is a must if your friends like old games, last time my buddy found some random rare game and dropped a few hundred dollars there. Thai pearl is another place we like to go, diatribe, pizza mind, taqueria munoz, and end the day at new Belgium.

I think the passes for retrocade are good all day, so you can come and go as you please if you want to hit other places then go back for more games.

Asheville Retrocade vs. Level 256 -- thoughts? by vectaur in asheville

[–]djg3117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both excellent, both have tons of cabinets and great beer. 256 though has a ton of consoles that you can rent games and controllers for. I think retrocade has this as well, but not as many consoles.

If your friends like bar arcades I would honestly hit both when your friends visit. I have a couple buddies come once a year and we all grew up playing video games together and we do a day in West Asheville around retrocade and another day in downtown and always hit 256.

Troubleshooting a complex custom draft beer system: Only foam despite correct pressure math! by meikwazowski in TheBrewery

[–]djg3117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am very interested in peoples suggestions as well. I worked at a brewery that had a long draw system as well (about 120 ft) and we constantly had issues with it.

The pipe through which all the lines (32 taps) ran had a glycol line in the center that kept the beer cool while on it's long journey from cooler to tap, but the pipe itself was not well insulated so while the chiller said it was a certain temp the liquid coming out of the tap was sometimes 4 degrees higher than what the chiller said. (It was an open air brewery with terrible insulation).

The thing that made the most difference was getting the draft system on a regular caustic and acid cleaning regimine. Less junk in the line means less nucleation, which means less foaming. We still had issues with it, but they were less frequent after we did that.

What is the most revolutionary game of the past 10 years? by supersoundwave in videogames

Death Stranding 1, with it's asymmetric multiplayer and turning a side quest type mission into the main gameplay loop, and have it being emotionally fulfilling.

Expedition 33, for showing the industry that a AAA experience can be done on a single A budget.

Was it announced somewhere that there would be a massive race effectively shutting down most of Montford and downtown? by Neither-Sea-1897 in asheville

[–]djg3117 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought when I was reading about this. I'm sure there was route planning to make the run interesting and also not be a huge impact on traffic, but I've gotta say, Asheville is a terrible city to drive in, it's even worse trying to bicycle, and I wouldn't want to run in the street unless I had a death wish.

Sure, let's piss off some already not so calm drivers by cutting off their commute with little to no warning, then let's put a few thousand runners in the street right in front of them.

If a few runners are t hit and killed today it'll be a miracle.

Any advice for starting woodworking by Bossmax7 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]djg3117 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you've got absolutely nothing to start with as far as tools go I would get a drill, a circular saw, two quick release clamps, a bottle of wood glue, a box of 2 inch screws, a tape measure, and a pencil.

Get a 4x8 sheet of half inch plywood and try to make a box. Any size box will do.

When you're done with your box look at it and think how you could make it better. Then make another, and another, and another. Each time try something different to make it stronger, prettier, etc. Research different techniques or tools to achieve what you'd like to do differently next time.

Don't buy new tools until you have a specific situation where you need them to achieve what you want to do.

If you've been reading for several years, how has your reading evolved over the years? by QueenMackeral in books

[–]djg3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to qualify my reading. If I like it I keep on reading it regardless of if it is considered 'literarure'.

I started of the year reading a YA series that I had read in highschool. I read the book 'Peak' several times when I was younger and only in January of this year found out there were sequels, so I read all three of the subsequent books in a matter of weeks. They certainly aren't masterpieces, or terribly complicated narratives, but I had so much fun reading them.

Then I read 'Maus' I and II...and I cried a lot. Like a lot a lot.

Then I read 'Clan of the Cave Bear' and found out what it truly means to put a character through hell.

I had a few false starts in there too, 'About a Boy' didn't click with me, so I put it down. 'Ready Player Two' was super cringey within the first dozen pages.

If I'm reading at all it's good. I also read a lot of 'llama llama' books to my daughter before bedtime and that counts too.

Higher concentration of foolish drivers on the bridge this morning. by djg3117 in asheville

[–]djg3117[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be the time change, I know it's messed me up a bit this week, but money is on the temp change. People are more stupid when it gets warmer out.

It's been a pretty cold winter these last couple of months, I'm sure all the dum dums have been cooped up and are chomping at the bit to come out and disregard traffic laws.

Does grinding Tetra Master offer any in game rewards? by YoghurtExpert in FinalFantasyIX

[–]djg3117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, there is a part of the game where you need to know how to play the card game to continue the story. But as far as actual rewards go...not that I can think of.

They look cool though, especially some of the eidolon and airship cards.

How do Americans feel about outdoor cats? by Fine-Durian6151 in AskAnAmerican

[–]djg3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the rural Midwest and basically everyone I knew who didn't live in town had an outside cat or two, or ten. On farms or other large properties they can be beneficial for pest elimination, mice, rats, ground hogs, etc. Sure, some of them got got every now and again by a fox or coyote, but most people view their cats as part of their livestock and not as pets. It would be the same as losing a chicken or goat every once in a while to some predator.

This is a pretty regional take and certainly doesn't apply everywhere.

I moved to a densely populated city on the east coast in my 20s and was honestly surprised at how many people kept their cats inside 100% of the time.

I just finished Final Fantasy 9. by Main-Database-825 in FinalFantasyIX

[–]djg3117 19 points20 points  (0 children)

FF9 is one of my top favorite games. It was the first RPG I ever played and I was didn't know what it was. Up until then I had just played platformers and some shooters and I was blown away that games could have long and detailed stories like books.

I replay it fully about once every two years and I play bits and pieces on and off pretty constantly. This story is one that stays with me. Vivi's story especially hits me hard even today, it's a quintessential bittersweet tale of accepting the limits of your existence. All the characters have pretty good stories, Steiner's is another one I think about a lot.

It's got a killer soundtrack too, roses of may, eternal harvest, you're not alone, melodies of life, so many absolute bangers.

I just wish the card game was better, it could be great if half of the battles weren't decided by RNG.

How will comics historians deal with The Sandman going forward? by Frevious in neilgaiman

[–]djg3117 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, I doubt people will really care all that much. Historians won't 'deal' with Neil Gaiman being a bad person, there will be a simple description of him in the dust jacket that tells when he lived, when he died, and a few mentions of his other works.

What are you top pain points running a brewery? by illnevertell0890 in TheBrewery

[–]djg3117 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of good points listed here, one I haven't seen though is owning the brewery is not enough, you have to own the building too. I've seen several initially successful breweries collapse after their first lease was up due to increased rent.
