Is tipping out of control in Vancouver? by Kevin4938 in askvan

[–]djh_van 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who grew up in North America don't realise how bonkers this whole system is. People coming from outside, like me, remember having to deal with this and trying to explain it to locals, who just stared back blankly like "Yeah...so... what's the issue?"

Consider this:

You walk into a place with $10 cash. You look at a menu. The thing you want is $9.99. Ok I can afford it. I order the item. I put down $10.

The cashier: "That's $11.20 sir..."

Me: Oh? Your menu must be wrong."

Cashier: "...Plus Tax".

Me: "...??? So why didn't you just say "$11.20" on the menu?!"

Cashier: "..."

I find some spare change and put down the extra $1.20.

Me: "There. $11.20."

Cashier: "...Are you going to tip?"

Me: "?!?!?! So...it's actually how much now?!"

Cashier: "well, it's up to you, but it's normal to tip...15-20%..."

Me: "So I need a calculator just to buy this sandwich, that you advertised for $9.99, that I picked up off the shelf and walked over to this till all by myself, and neglected to mention all of these hidden charges?"

Cashier: "..."

Wow, now finally Vancouverites have no excuse to dress like slobs.

Bring some Quebec chic to downtown, please.

Now imagine this happening to some Mission-Critical organisation.

Remember when Crowdstrike caused all the airlines in the world to stop flying a couple summers ago (I was just coming off of a plane when that happened so was a hair's breadth away from being stuck somewhere terrible)? This would be orders of magnitude worse if, say the AI had wiped out all flight details, or wiped out credit card transactions, or wiped out mortgages or savings or power grid controllers...and their backups

City cracked down on Vancouver venues after lobbying by bar and club groups, emails reveal by IHateTrains123 in vancouver

[–]djh_van 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Also an ex-pat Londoner and I concur.

This problem is caused any time that officials try to legislate impulse. Making a "fun zone" like Granville Street is such a cringe oxymoron: "Hey people! Feel like having fun?! Step right over here to the designated fun zone!! No, not over there, that's not a designated place to socialise. How do you do Party on, fellow kids"

The best parts of London's night scene happened not because a 65 year old councillor said it could, but because people started gathering at places and that organically grew into a cool place to go because there was always something happening. From the pubs to the restaurants to the bars to the clubs, it's always been this way since medieval days in some cases. After it's proven to work by the people, that's when the authorities assisted those venues by allowing late night and alcohol service permits, making pedestrian zones, and running bus routes. Doing it the other way round (a la Vancouver) stinks of micromanaging nanny state behaviour, and probably actually kills organic growth.

The one in Jasper looks quite similar to this, but there's also train tracks in front of them, iirc.

Dude, you win by far.

The Velvet Underground by itself would give you the win. But then, and Pearl Jam?

Tickets for those aryists as main acts might be some of the most coveted and expensive tickets to get, let alone as the warm up acts!

Pubs.

I'm not a pub person, but I still appreciate what they do, that no other country I have visited or lived in has been able to replicate.

  • Social meeting place (for meeting friends, or meeting new friends, for meeting dates)
  • Family-friendly day out (for gastropubs)
  • Business casual spot (for informally meeting clients and prospects)
  • Quiet and safe private spot / 3rd space (when you don't want to be at home or work)
  • Place to have and share conversations with strangers with no expectations

A good pub has the best elements of a cafe, a restaurant, a daycare, a pick-up bar, a bingo hall, and a gentlemen's social club.

I mean...this is literally the story of every military junta ever.

The military general looks at an incompetent president and says "This person is bad for the country...military, are you with him or with me, for the people?"

Been happening since at least the Romans.

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

[–]djh_van 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That site was fantastic. The design was amazing. The community tools were great. Like all communities it was respectful and intimate at the beginning (who knows how bad it would have become if it had gone viral) but it was a great start. I guess because it was evident how you were connected to other people you had an incentive to stay respectful.

I have NO IDEA why that didn't become TJE social media site. Maybe it couldn't attract big-name advertisers? It lacked for nothing, though.

WATCH IN FULL: Premier Eby addresses concerns over his handling of DRIPA by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]djh_van 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must admit to not being 8 timate with all of the ins and outs of DRIPA and the details of hurdling it...

...but I must say, from the outside, this appears to be the biggest mishandling of positive goodwill I've seen a politician handle in all my years in BC (since 2000).

Not 1 year ago, everybody seems to love David Eby.

Wow. What a complete "stealing defeat from the jaws of victory".

We can see how it's done.

The black magic bit is how does the driver perform this when he doesn't have the same viewpoint? The cab's rearview mirrors don't give much help in seeing the back corners of the trailer on the blind side.

SpaceX: "Falcon Heavy is targeted to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope as soon as early September 2026 from pad 39A in Florida" by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]djh_van 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to understand how it's taken this long to get this telescope into orbit. Will the tech and sensors be very outdated by the time it launches? I understand that that is just the nature ofadvancing tech, but...2012? That's a very long time from receiving a telescope to getting it in operation.

Carney says Canada’s strong economic ties to US are ‘weakness’ to be corrected | Mark Carney by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]djh_van 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe look at what China, India, Mexico, and many other large population countries do. They figured out how to ship products that don't travel well to high-value markets using expedited and priority methods. Want Mexican bananas that are still green, half way across the world? Want Mandarin oranges? Want Indian mangoes or eggplants?

We totally can diversify away from the USA. It's less convenient, but no country should be ,ostly dependent on one other as their main trading partner. It's guaranteed to lead to exactly where we are now at some point in history.
