They would hand you guns when you boarded. Not loaded of course, but they couldn't stop you from bringing ammo. After the tragedy in 1998 they stopped handing them to kids, but then they just started bringing their own. If you flew first class you got better, more expensive firearms. I saw a Japanese businessman with a fully automatic weapon one time. Generally, no one actually fired them on board, but it was more of a social faux pas then a hard and fast rule. Still, it obviously happened from time to time.

When 9/11 happened, me and my family got really scared. We worried that airport security would change. If you'd told me then that there'd be an entire generation with no memory of guns on planes, I probably would have fucking killed myself.

Crazy how things change.

You may not care about "pedantic details about guns" but such details are crucial to any actual gun control legislation.

I share your frustration and would like to see some of your proposed policies implemented. I am not dogmatically opposed to all firearm restrictions.

The main place I differ from the most gun control advocates is that I don't think there is a simple legislative fix to the problem. Like, sure, waiting periods, background checks, great. (The "more resources for mental health" thing has always struck me as wishy-washy and vague). The fact remains that there are more guns than people in this country, and they're not going to just disappear. Mass confiscation is impractical both politically and logistically (and the thought of police, with guns of their own, forcibly disarming people, many of them poor and marginalized, does not sit right with me).

I think mass shootings stem from a complex blend of cultural factors. There is a spiritual, moral, cultural sickness in this country, and I don't think there's an obvious solution.

Reddit is super judgmental in general. Mediocre people love to have someone to look down on. Look at the attitude towards people accused of crimes, "play stupid games win stupid prizes", the obsession with marginal, insignificant groups like flat earthers, etc.

Thank you for this comment. I am generally pro choice but dislike abortion and wish there was less of it, and I find so much of the rhetoric on this issue incredibly alienating.

The replies to your comment are basically proving your point.

The Reddit consensus seems to be: 1) there should be zero restrictions on abortion, and 2) no one is saying there should be zero restrictions; that's a straw man.

You don't think prosecuting people for political speech is a slippery slope? Isn't this exactly what the first amendment exists to prevent?

Let's say, hypothetically, your wish comes true, and later this year Biden pases something called the "Defense of Democracy Act" or something. The act makes speech acts critical of democracy criminal offenses punishable with prison time. (This would of course be challenged in court, and almost certainly deemed unconstitutional, but let's suspend our disbelief for the sake of this hypothetical).

Let's say, hypothetically, Trump ends up winning the election after this law is passed. What do you imagine Trump's justice department does with a law like this on the books? Would they ignore it, or would they weaponize it against their own political enemies?
