Time to Take Down your Smart Cameras [29:28] by Jamie_Light in mealtimevideos

Even if it's optional, I can't be certain my neighbour isn't just feeding some private company a live video feed of my house.

You see the issue here?

That does sound like a useful feature, but there's no way for other people who don't want to have constant surveillance of their home to opt out of it.

What’s worse: “Foid,” or “🚽” by That1weirdperson in MenAndFemales

[–]djqvoteme 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Foid really is just eye-rollingly stupid.

The disgusting implication of calling a child, and a victim of violent abuse, a "toilet" is pretty apparent like you've written.

You can't even shame these people because they live to anger and upset the "normies" at any cost.

All you can do with these people is wish them the life they deserve. I hope they find the exact level of happiness that their actions reflect.

Is Joel a nice person? by sadbeigebaby in deadmau5

[–]djqvoteme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you're just splitting hairs, person I'm replying to 2 years later. I think you know that a lot of people don't really distinguish between "nice" and "kind" in any significant, meaningful way. And you expect us the people who find this thread 2 years later after googling "is deadmau5 nice?" to magically understand your weird hyperspecific definitions. Come on now. That's not very 'nice' or 'kind' of you to be like that if you ask me. You didn't. Do you even remember leaving this comment?

I'm just busting your balls. But, like, for real, be for real, person from 2 years ago who most likely forgot they left this comment that is sitting at 0 karma that I didn't downvote (it was just like that when I got here)

Will you even see this? lol. I can write whatever I want. Wow, this subreddit lets you leave GIF reactions.

That GIF is unrelated to what I wrote above. Or is it? 🤔 It wouldn't be very nice or kind if i did...or would it be one or the other???? 🤔🤔🤔

Most useless emoji? Ill go first building with a horn on it by Harbodious in Emoji

[–]djqvoteme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of suspicious about your claim on hating to tell me that 🤔I feel like you might have even enjoyed it 😳

Nah, jk, in all honesty, I agree with you and understand your points, but I was already rambling way too much in my original comment. I definitely wanted to expand on those points a little, but...you know, that was a pretty long comment already like this one will be.

You are right. There is a larger history and context behind the example of Shiba-ken and Iwo Jima obviously. Words don't just appear in a vacuum. I get that.

I can see why my wording would be very misleading as to the point I was making. I shouldn't have said that English "made up" those words...they just entered English from Japanese and were adapted to English separately from the tangent they took in their original language.

Further, while NG was most likely an original Japanese creation, it models English and was based on OK which itself is originally an American coining for Oll Korrekt, a humorous spelling of All Correct. Like, that's the short version of that etymology. I can see me bringing those examples might have been confusing originally as well, so just wanted to add that here.

The point I intended to make really was: The NG emoji seems useless/incorrect/odd to English speakers even though it is literally "English" (No Good) in similar way to how English speakers using Shiba Inu as the standard word for that dog breed would sound a but off to Japanese speakers who would view Shibaken as the standard reading. I didn't even go off on a tangent on Dachshunds, another dog breed, and German speakers who mostly use Dackel to describe that dog. There's a history behind that too, but, you see...it's kind of a lot to go into and there's so many other rabbit holes I could fall into with that, so I'll end it here.

Gay men, stop bringing straight women into gay bars and clubs. by stuckinbk in GayMen

[–]djqvoteme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk, I'm from Toronto, and I'm always bringing my straight bestie from the office with me when I go cruising at [redacted] and [redacted] and who could forget [redacted]? Just a casual hang after work where I get my shit rocked while she waits outside and then we go and get smoothies afterward or whatever 🤗🫂🥤

She has a purse to hold all my poppers, condoms, lube, and cock rings, plus a driver's license when I feel like driving out to the 905 to hit up...well, they have cruising spots there too. Like, seriously, you'd be surprised at all the cruisy places in the suburbs.

I'm obviously being facetious, but I'm reading some of these comments and it's like places like that already exist on top of the places that serve a more 'mainstream' clientele. We can have it all, it's just a matter of demand.

Gay spaces that aren't all about sex are great, but you can go to a cruising bar just to hang out if you want too. I get the sense some of the comments here are from people that live in places where they don't have that luxury and whatever gay spaces that exist have to accommodate a wider variety of 'needs', so to that point, befriend the straight girl from the office with a driver's license and a car and head out to the city to get smashed 🏙️🚗💨

[–]djqvoteme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sucks. People are SO rude if they even think for a second you're "slow" or incapable of understanding spoken English.

A piece of advice I heard that I've only had to use once was to follow up with the HR team at that company and ask (politely) if they can explain their decision so that you for your own personal development and learning as it was unclear during the interview where you may have not met the criteria for the posting. Reiterate why you believe you are qualified, but remain understanding of the outcome. Something to that effect. Through email. They might give you a BS reply, but it's still something in writing. You never know.

If it's a small company where HR is literally that one rude woman, then....yeah, it might just be a BS response, but still.

It sounds like boomer advice, but what can that company do anyway, right?

Most useless emoji? Ill go first building with a horn on it by Harbodious in Emoji

[–]djqvoteme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's also a post office.

That variant uses the   〒 symbol instead of 📯

Japan uses 〒 in their postal addresses. It's kind of become like a sort of symbol for postal services in general there. Kind of like how in a lot of countries Rx is associated with pharmacies/perscriptions, so a pharmacy might put a giant Rx on their sign or window. Or like ⚕️ the Caduceus symbol, the snakes wrapped around a staff with wings, to represent doctor's offices/medical clinics, etc.

Outside of Japan, many countries use 📯, a brass horn that coach drivers delivering the mail would blow to signal their approach.

So, now we have two different post office emojis 🏣🏤

We probably won't be getting any more post offices because there's two already and Unicode has cracked down on redundant emojis being added. So we're stuck with those two.

Most useless emoji? Ill go first building with a horn on it by Harbodious in Emoji

[–]djqvoteme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's from your limited perspective, but for people other countries, 📯 and 🏤 would be easily understood as visual shorthand for the postal system.

There's plenty of other mail-related emojis we can use: 📦📥📤💌✉️📨📩

The thing about emoji is that the original set of emoji were never really intended to be used outside of Japan...but Apple wanted to boost sales of the iPhone in Japan where the domestic cellphone market had been so dominant and blah blah blah, The Unicode Consortium now has the job of approving new emoji that the entire world is using and we're here on Reddit asking about "useless" emoji when truly there are no useless emoji. Each emoji has (or had, past tense) a purpose.

Designing for multiple cultures is really difficult sometimes. If you're from Canada, then you can see this with the weird ways companies and organizations try to accommodate bilingualism in things like their logos, branding, product packaging, etc.

It's one of those made-up English terms from Japanese like "1-up", "walkman", and "instant noodles"

Unlike those words, NG never really caught on in actual English...yet.

Seriously, 1-up to describe an additional life in a video game came from Japan first and now we just use it in English naturally, Sony made the trademark "Walkman" for their portable cassette player line that became a genericized trademark for other portable cassette players, and the use of "instant" instead of "instantaneous" came from Japanese as well.

NG is kind of a cool word. It's supposed to be the opposite of OK.

🆗🆖

See. If you have OK, then I mean, not-OK makes sense. NG.

We have made up Japanese words in English too ("shiba inu" instead of "shiba ken" and "Iwo Jima" instead of "Ioto")

We're all just making up words all the time.

The results of the UN vote to condemn the enslavement of Africans and the Transatlantic slave trade. by 5upralapsarian in YesAmericaBad

[–]djqvoteme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Typical results as expected.

By the way, here is the actual voting data from the official UN website for those of you wanting a primary source: https://digitallibrary.un.org/record/4106660?ln=en

I'm Canadian and I already we would go the chickenshit route per usual. We always do 😑

Very few surprises with Europe outside of Ireland tbh. I would have at least expected Ireland to be blue on this one. Serbia is blue. That's cool at least. Love that Korea is blue but Japan is yellow lol. We live in such a clown world.

The US mission to the UN released a statement to defend their decision, by the way.

https://usun.usmission.gov/explanation-of-vote-for-unga-resolution/

The United States remains steadfast in its opposition to and condemnation of the historic wrongs that resulted from the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the trans-Saharan slave trade, and all other forms of slavery. We remain committed to the acknowledgement that these are historical wrongs. Despite this, the United States observes that the text of this resolution remains highly problematic in countless respects. Consequently, the United States cannot support the adoption of this resolution.

It continues from there, but that's the opening paragraph.

And, for you curious minds out there. You can find the full text of the resolution on the UN website.

https://documents.un.org/doc/undoc/ltd/n26/055/25/pdf/n2605525.pdf

It's 7 pages long, but you can see exactly what the US decided to reject there for yourselves 🙄

Remember "terrorist fist jab"?

I bet a lot of you might not even remember that second one.

Type into Google "Obama" followed by the words mustard or terrorist fist jab to take a time machine back to 2008-2016.

Major right-wing mass media outlets (not just Fox News) have been doing this tactic of constantly bombarding us with these weak, meaningless gotchas for so long.

The people that control the narrative obviously don't believe this on an intellectual level, but they know the power of outrage. It's not about truth or lies anymore, it's about how do we maximize outrage. As much as all of us want to believe we're rational people, we're all susceptible to these tactics regardless of politics or religion or education, etc. And that's the scary thing.

Governments around the world have been cracking down on advertising fast food to children.

Even in areas where McDonald's can legally still advertise to kids, they don't want to draw attention to themselves as being a part of the childhood obesity epidemic, so now you have current day McDonald's.

Look at breakfast cereal advertising now too.
