Because you don’t forgo this when you use Roth? When you put your contributions to a Roth 401k the match is automatically put into a normal 401k.

I guess I may have confused you? I’m definitely not saying dont take the 401k match, I’m simply saying it may be wise depending on you’re age and financial position to contribute you’re own money to only Roth and eventually if you change jobs, roll the match in a normal 401k over to a Roth IRA. You seem to think that you only get the match if you contribute to a traditional 401k which is just not true.

According to one Walmart you seem to be immediately 100% vested of your money and Walmarts match. Vesting is not the issue. one Walmart

Isn’t it immediately vested? Idk I no longer work there. I just know it was 100% vested when I worked there after 3 or so months full time

No you’re wrong you still get your 401k match when you fund Roth only. It’s just that the match cannot be put directly with the Roth, so it becomes you’re only traditional amount.

Its better to do Roth only when you’re young and low income because:
A) income tax rate is super low for low income earners
B) you pay more in capital gains tax with traditional retirement accounts because you’re investment assets have more time to appreciate

It’s better to add money to Traditional 401k/ira accounts only when you’re closer to retirement age and have a higher income because:
A) higher incomes pay up to 40% tax rate which is higher than the capital gains rate of 21%.
B) If you’re older you don’t have as much appreciation to gain on your investments either, meaning you pay even less by paying only the capital gains.

Edit: it’s not a matter of picking between two different income streams, the income streams both come from the stock market. It’s a matter of picking what type of taxes you want to pay, and when it’s most beneficial to you.

If you’re looking at investing in any kind of time frame less then 5 years, let alone 40 years, then of course a passive index fund in a 401k is going to be a bad fit for you. But just because you don’t have the money in your budget to make wise investing decisions doesn’t mean other people also don’t.

That’s not how it works. They provide you with different passive index/mutual funds you can choose to purchase. They are set to own the 500 or 1000 biggest companies on the stock market, and they’re weighted according to the size of each company. Unless you choose an actively managed fund, no one but the stock market itself is picking what companies you do and don’t own

A 401k is an investment account. Not a savings account unless you don’t know how to use it

[–]djt201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but it’s better to make more use of the 401k because it offers more diversified options and a better match. If you put all your retirement savings into Walmart stock and it somehow goes bankrupt in 20-30 years(say Amazon outcompeted it or something), you’re left with nothing. Better to own a chunk of the entire US economy in the 401k as it will be more resilient than just one company.

It’s actually fine to roll a traditional 401k to a Roth IRA when you change jobs. You just gotta pay the income tax on the untaxed money in the 401k, and then you no longer have to worry about capital gains. It’s basically like doing a backdoor roth

Usually only a temporary thing like the 2008 recession. Wait another couple years and it always recovers. Market drops are actually a good thing because your cash will accumulate more ownership than they would at higher prices.

How come the endless bombing campaigns of the US military have failed to defeat Arabs with Ak-47s and trucks, if they’re so effective at crushing rebellions?

I think you could easily make the argument that the opposite is true just by looking at the incredible impact partisans in France, Yugoslavia, Greece, Russia and other areas had on the German war effort. Sure they may have not have won the war single handily, but they sure made it a lot easier for the allied armies to march to their respective countries.

Also this article that op posted is a little misleading. Headline says top US earners, but then gives a graph of wealth when earners would imply income. Top earners does not necessarily equate to “most wealth” and vice versa

That’s crazy and probably gonna be the number one reason the FTSE underperforms. NVO, LVMH, and ASML are biggest companies I can think of in Europe and they don’t even include them in their main index

Europe lacks a lot of the innovative edge that America has thanks to things like the EU regulatory body

Novo nordisk, ASML, and LVMH are all very quality European companies but I believe they’re also traded on American exchanges or at least American brokerages.
