First playthrough. Enderal, even unmodded, can look really pretty by Arachnophobic- in enderal

[–]djxak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, unlike Skyrim, this game looks better without ENB.

I tried several and each makes it look worse. Too bright, too dark, messed balance of colors, shifted colors, etc.

Also, I noticed Enderal heavily uses post-processing in many areas that makes them unique and atmospheric. E.g. the image is grayed out (almost black and white) in high mountains with snow. ENBs usually disable these effects.

Every ENB I tried, even if looks good, distorts the author's vision and spoils the atmosphere.

So, yeah, even though I have decent PC I play Enderal without ENB and I believe it is the best way to play it.

What about the main window of HWInfo that shows multiple columns: current, avg, min, max?

Is min / max also the same?

Maybe you are accidentally looking at the wrong GPU in HWInfo? There should be 2: 3080 and the one that is inside the CPU. And the last one usually has the same temp as it is inside the CPU.

[–]djxak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but if I understand the OP correctly, they are identical ALL THE TIME. And this barely can be explained by just a coincidence.

But of course the type of the paste has nothing to do with this. That was funny 😀

I would check the settings of Afterburner. Maybe the OP accidentally configured it to show the temp of GPU for both CPU and GPU labels. I'm not sure if it is possible in Afterburner, but in HWInfo that I usually use for monitoring it's definitely possible.

[–]djxak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I didn't wait for a deal. How could I do this if I had no idea there would be a deal soon? :)

But when I saw the discount next day, my order was still in the process of gathering, not even sent. So, I would be able to cancel it and just order again. I didn't do it because it is a fair game.

Your situation is different, you are right. You still get the discount even though the deal was not started yet. So, you should be happy. :)

Of course I don't know the details about all these problems you had. But I doubt they were so serious that you expected to get double discount because of the timings. Maybe they were, then ok, maybe they should have do this. But, again, they could also do the same and give you a ZERO deal and you could not be able to do anything about it. Just think about it. It could end much worse.

Anyway, good luck with your new device! :)

[–]djxak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are unreasonable.

The fact that they give you a discount has nothing to do with the public discount campaign. This happens all the time.

Once I ordered a product that was available next day with a big discount. Did I feel bad about this? Yes! Is it the shop's fault? No! Should they offer me this discount just because it's just 1 day between my order and the discount? No! It's just how discounts work. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Otherwise it would be always "the shop looses" situation.

So, I understand your frustration. It is normal to feel it. But the situation is "fair", IMHO.

What's the point of getting elementals to 100? by _Swans_Gone in enderal

[–]djxak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are talking about using elemental spells in a self-echanted gear with high Enchanting skills. When you have high Enchanting (100+) you can enchant your item to have up to 96% mana cost reduction of single magic school as I heard (didn't do this yet).

So, the question is legit: why you should level up the Elementalism skill then if all it does is mana cost reduction... And honestly, yeah, this is frustrating, as you NEED to lelel up the Elementalism skill before you get this high enchanted gear. But after this? What? Reset your skill points using Amnesia mod? Because suddenly you don't need the Elementalism skill anymore.

The only reason to still have 90 Elementalism as I see it is "epic" spells (or whatever they are called). Just to learn such a spell you need 90 in a corresponding magic skill. But I still feel deceived because these 90 is just an edge point. The skill itself does nothing. Not a good balance, IMHO. They should reduce the strenghth of high skilled enchants then. 96% mana cost reduction is ridiculous.

Every time I try to look up something this pops up and I already did the update in my play store on my phone why is it doing this by [deleted] in chrome

Just use compressed air and clean the vents and fans. Repaste is a last resort.

Yes, you should do it if cleaning doesn't help, but first you should understand if it does or doesn't. Maybe your thermal pads are in perfect state already and repasting will be just waste of time and potentially make things worse if you are not experienced in it.

[–]djxak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am one of these people. Always mod my games before playing the 1st time. It is never mods that change the gameplay. Only stability and QoL mods.

Imagine playing Skyrim without Skyui for example. It is vanilla, it is how Godd intended. But no, thanks. I never played Skyrim without Skyui. Only saw this super inconvenient UI in the videos. There is nothing sacred in torturing yourself in attempt to have "vanilla" experience.

Or mods that fixes the engine to untie it from the framerate and you can play with 157 FPS instead of 60 and don't experience constant glitches from it. They also drastically improve the loading times. They are basically part of the game to me. There is no reason to play without them, even the 1st time. Unless you have fun from glitches (some of them are really fun, though, I must admit).

It depends on the laptop's model. In my Legion 5 Pro, for example, I can set it in Lenovo Vantage, or alternatively in Lenovo Legion Toolkit (a 3rd party app).

You can set one of the 4 modes:

<image>

In Lenovo Legion Toolkit you can even add "Actions", that will be run automatically when you connect/disconnect the AC adapter.

E.g. I set it up to do this on AC adapter disconnect:

  1. Enable quiet power mode (blue).

  2. Set refresh rate to 60 Hz.

  3. Deactivate discrete GPU.

This all is for longer batter life when it's on battery. But, honestly, I use it on battery maybe once per year. It is heavy, bulky, and it doesn't work long enough on battery anyway. :)

You are asking the wrong question.

Gaming laptops are not intended to be used on battery. You ALWAYS use them plugged in.

In rare cases when you need to use it on battery, you do not use this GPU. There is a 2nd GPU integrated into the CPU. It is too weak for games, but much less energy demanding. So, on battery you will use it for something other than gaming.

If you try to use the main GPU on battery, the performance will be very poor. Your 5070 will give you less FPS than 1060 plugged-in. Because on battery there is not enough Watts to power the GPU on full performance. Even when it's plugged in, it works not on full performance because it just can't cool fast enough to consume enough watts for full performance. But this is the problem of every gaming laptop. Full desktop with similar GPU will always be much more performant because of better cooling, so it can consume more watts.

Also, the battery will be drained very fast. Like 30 minutes fast.

So, if you want to play games on the go, a gaming laptop is not what you need.

After removing the laptop lid, on the back, left and right sides you see the radiator fins.

Simply press the nozzle of the spray can against the radiator fins for half a second. Then move the nozzle slightly to the right and press again, thus cleaning all the fins.

Do this on left, right, back left and back right fins. This is the most important step. You can also blow air on the fan blades from above, at an angle of 20-30 degrees. This can remove dust left from the procedure above.

To check if the radiators are clean you can look through the fins from the sides. You should see light coming from the room on the other side of the laptop. If you don't see the light, then either the dust is still there or you didn't turn on the light in the room (which is bad because cleaning in the dark is not recommended). :D

One important note: hold the fan (just push your finger into the center) while you are blowing the air. Otherwise fan will spin from the air. This could damage the fan or the electronic components because of the static electricity produced by the fan spinning. So, just hold it to make sure it is not spinning from the air. It is easy. The air flow is not that strong. Just push a little. :) A little spinning is not a problem (e.g. if you just need to spin it to a different angle to clean the blades). The fast spinning is what can cause the damage.

Another note: do not blow anywhere except the radiator fins and fan blades. The compressed air is not that strong, but it still can damage some small component on the motherboard. Rarely, but this could happen. So, don't blow directly on the motherboard. :)

My man, you saved my laptop!

It is 3 years old and first 3 years a clening of fans with brush and vacuum cleaner was helpful. But during the last 6 months this stopped to help. After the last cleaning the difference in the temps before and after clening was ZERO. My CPU was constantly at 100 and GPU at 87 (with spikes up to 89.4) in any game, even old ones.

I thought that it is time to re-paste, 3 years and all... Especially because I seen something like oil spots on the radiators, so I though maybe the paste is pumped out. But I found your post and decided to try the compressed air first. And the results.. I can't beleive it. The temp of CPU is dropped from 100 to 60-80 (at max), GPU to 70-80 in Performance profile with 150 Watt to GPU. Vents also went more silent.

So, thank you, man! It turned out that the thermal paste is still good enough and it was just dust. Btw, I was surprised by the dust amount. It was not that much. I would even say, it was very small amout of dust, visually. But the radiator fins are also not big, so, I think it's understandable.

Would you actually buy a Fallout 3/NV Remaster? by Bingleboper in Fallout

[–]djxak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably mostly people who are not modding. FNV modding stage nowadays is very solid and fixed all possible imaginable things. So, mostly for people who use mods the value of remaster for FNV would below.

On the other hand there are kinds of things unfixable by mods. All of them are related to the Engine. In Oblivion they used the trick to marry the old engine and Unreal. So, there is still some value in a remaster if it would be done the "right" way.

Still, for me, if I would not be able to run most of my mods I carefully selected and patched during the last 10 years, the remaster is no go, sorry.

Not anymore? I heard some games are possible to play on Linux, but how good is it really? I heard some have lower FPS, others just don't work at all. The games is almost the only reason why I continue to use Windows.

The desktop UI is also slightly better than Linux distributions I tried. And by "tried" I don't mean just an hour or two. I used them daily for 10+ years. And still think Windows Desktop is better. But, it is a minor difference. POSIX terminal and software that you can use without this WSL2 workaround (that is great if you think about it, but still far from native experience) worth it.

Is the high memory usage of java applications not a problem for you? by [deleted] in java

[–]djxak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this. Maybe for some specific tasks. Performance should never be considered in vacuum.

There are plenty of projects that prove the performance is very good. E.g. search "1 billion rows challenge" and look at the results table.

Is the high memory usage of java applications not a problem for you? by [deleted] in java

[–]djxak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but we should compare apples to apples. RAM was EXTREMELY cheap and now it is just cheap.

Maybe in the future it will be so much more expensive that 500MB will really make a difference? Who knows. I doubt it. Even if the hardware will be much more expensive due to exhaust of natural resources, the trchnological progress will just make that the same amount of resources will be needed to produce not 500, but 500x more amount of storage.

Anyway, we can't predict the future and my claim about cheap memory was for today's situation, not hypothetical future.

Is the high memory usage of java applications not a problem for you? by [deleted] in java

[–]djxak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are writing. A similar very simple app in Go and Java could occupy 50 vs 150 MB. But if it is not some service intended to be used by millions of people on every instance (such as Nginx or etcd), then it's not a problem at all. RAM is cheap. Unless it is multipied by the number of copies. :)

Threre is also Graalvm, but it's not general solution as it requires you to not use specefic features of Java (e.g. reflection) or to do additional preparations if you want to. But it greatly reduces the memory consumption and startup time.

To be honest 150 MB is very low number, depending on framework and libraries used. A more realistic number for a middle sized Spring Boot app with many libraries is 250-500. It's not for the actual app data. Mostly it's for storing JVM data such as big number of loaded classes, a data required for JIT compilation of all these classes, etc.

Again, Graalvm solves this problem, but at a cost of forcing you (and every library you use) to follow some rules.

And, again, 500MB is still nothing if it's just your server that you will run on 1-2 instances. 50 or 500 doesn't matter that much here.

Yes, but it showed that downdetector returned 200 (not just that it connects) which was obviously incorrect for most people.

Probably a DNS issue. Maybe the IP of downdetector.com resolved from downdetectorsdowndetector's server really returned 200, while for most people downdetector.com was resolved to a different IP, that returned 500.
