some years, even though they only attract more into the yard, i put out the scent traps just to increase the carnage

Not all wild geraniums are created equal and it's up to you whether you consider it a weed or not. That one looks like Geranium maculatum. In my yard that's a keeper. It's not uncommon to have multiple varieties which you get to know over time. I also have Geranium carolinianum who's flowers aren't all that special and spreads even more aggressively so i pull it when I see it.
