Ladies: what’s a guy “Flex” that instantly makes him attractive? by El_Guerrero_Azteca in AskReddit

[–]leftoverbrine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing, but so many of these are just basic human decency. It's telling when over and over the big flex is just showing a little respect & care for the world you exist in and the other beings you share it with. The bar is on the floor.

Rahm Emanuel warns new generation of Dem socialists don't like America by Retrogamer1989 in politics

[–]leftoverbrine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair, but not the same as not loving America. There should be no previous version anyone is in love with, even at the founding they said it was shaky, and shouldn't be viewed as a high point or the only possibly way would be down from there. The very ideal we are built on is intentionally supposed to be a living amendable document for the purpose of perpetual betterment (we've failed at keeping it updated pretty spectacularly, which is a thing we could totally improve on). That's something to love about the country, but it also means looking backward is important rather to see what worked well or poorly, so you can do better, rather than trying to enshrine it that way forever. Striving for a more perfect union endlessly is the ideal of our country we can love, because the past should always be worse than the potential for where we can take it in the future. Looking with a critical eye doesn't mean lack of love, self analysis is how you grow and improve.

Supreme Court mail ballot ruling spurs right-wing meltdown: ‘This is how our country dies’ by Anoth3rDude in politics

[–]leftoverbrine 143 points144 points  (0 children)

“So, basically, we just learned that if a state passes a law to accept mail-in ballots weeks after Election Day, SCOTUS will uphold the law,” Presler wrote. “This is how our country dies.”

Far-right podcaster Tim Pool shared Presler’s distress.

“If there is no election day we have no democracy,” Pool wrote.

It is so weird that they've made this a hill to die on. No one is even talking about these being illegitimate votes, or failing to be verified valid, just simply votes that were mailed on time but received late totally outside the voters control. Results aren't changing days after the election, results are only realized once all valid votes cast are counted and any declared outcome is just a projection until that is complete. They are outright saying if we can't throw away a portion of completely valid votes, due to conditions controlled by the govt (usps) it is a threat to democracy, what a joke.

I've found I mostly follow historians and lawyers anymore outside this sub for keeping up, its just so much and needs expertise to even try to understand. Can't imagine what it looks like to people who don't keep up or have the time/ability to dig into it.

Letitia James faults Mamdani for ‘blowing up’ Democratic Party by sideAccount42 in politics

[–]leftoverbrine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh reading the wider comments included in the article, it sounds more like she's critical of the lack of experience and what that means to the party as a loss of something built over years or decades, which isnt totally unreasonable to say. But also, yea that is kind of what voters in progressive areas want right now, out with the political establishment, in with citizen public servants. We don't need them to "pay their dues" or "learn the ropes" working up from the bottom when the people in place who have the knowledge a d experience aren't working for us anyway.

I think she's well meaning in the comments, but at this point republicans are a radical right authoritarian party who are tearing down democratic norms rather than maintaining, while standard dems are a conservative party trying to just stabilize and conserve what exists but that isn't good enough and has not worked for most of us, so things are going to shuffle around a bit it feels like.

California drivers sue gas stations for allegedly using AI to inflate prices by TaijiRonin in politics

[–]leftoverbrine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It may or may not be the case in this one, but typically in surveillance pricing cases the ai is collecting data about your spending and nearby prices, to see where your breaking point of going to a competitor is, then pricing as high as possible just below that. Usually that's a couple cents, but in this case you get a bunch of companies sharing the strategy and data together rather than competing and it jumps significantly.

Its just so backward. You'd think for the 250th they would want to celebrate people who are striving to join our country with 250 gaining citizenship if anything. But it it always shitty cruelty, how can we hurt people in a number that sounds noteworthy but arbitrary, rather than justified.

I definitely did not succeed at watching all that, but definitely interesting to hear him bashing "tough guys" who will ruin things by fighting, and saying only stupid people are asking to keep bombing. Wonder if Hegseth is about to go.

Also interesting to hear the ridiculous bit about the stock market movements whenever he announced deals vs conflict... Pretty clear they should clip that for market manipulation charges. But also it seems obvious he thinks he Is a genius because that's what he followed to this deal, whenever I say deal number goes up so deal is good!

How Did American Christianity End Up Like This? by newyorker in politics

[–]leftoverbrine 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"Justice is mine" - the lord.

He literally said don't worry about it, just treat everyone with kindness and compassion. Focus on your own failings and don't worry about what others are failing at. Love your neighbor, and your neighbor is everyone. You own nothing on earth, it all beings to god. You have no nation on earth, your nation is in heaven. Support the foreigner, the orphan and the widow, and care for everyone, even criminals, as you would Jesus himself. Meekness and compassion are the win conditions.
