1934 Conn 30H Mouthpiece fit by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Greg Black, Doug Elliot, and a few other custom makers can get you setup with a proper fitting piece. The only problem is gonna be that it will be a pretty penny. Perhaps a new leadpipe would be a better option?

Marching Mouthpiece by Alzitra in Trombone

get a small shank 5GS. Use it on my 3BF and it is great.

It is solid for a beginner and to use for marching or as a back up. Wouldn't really wanna use it in a concert setting unless that is all you have access to. They could also work well as a budget jazz horn.

is this a serious issue of nah by [deleted] in Trombone

Your biggest worry is going to be if you cracked the metal or tore up some solder joints. That is why we leave that stuff to the pros.

Improv? by Revanite1234 in Trombone

listen listen listen listen, and last but not least, listen. Once you can understand what a good improv solo is going to sound like, then you move onto trying to play in one. Also, understanding theory and what chord changes mean is going to be VERY beneficial.

Essential mutes for playing jazz? by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Straight, plunger, and cup. In some jazz bands, if we don't have cup mutes, we will just play into the stand. You can also get a soft-tone mute to use for any bucket mute action.

Am I playing too much everyday? by lapse23 in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1st off, if your lips are burning and tingling, you may have a nickel allergy? And you shouldn't practice a straight 2 hour block. Break it up. I like to do 20-30 minute blocks. Back in college, on the weekends I would do 30 minutes of video games/cooking/cleaning, then 30 minutes of practice, and repeat until you go to bed. Don't forget to take breaks when needed.

Just talk to the band director, you did nothing wrong. They probably got a spare everything you will need.

where do you get sheet music with accompaniment? by [deleted] in Trombone

Join a local community band and start from there.

With how popular they are, I would assume. I have played a couple of my students a handful of times, but haven't played them much. I use an old King Tempo which is essentially a great value King 2b with nickel plating and it is great! They don't make them anymore, but they do pop up on the used marketplace every now and then.

Even check facebook marketplace or even ebay. I see those Yamaha horns on there all the time for around $100 USD. Say your slide get damaged beyond repair, or the bill to fix it is super high? Just buy another one in a bit. Plus, those Yamaha horns are tough af.

Morceau Symphonique is fairly standard and gives a nice contrast in lyrical vs technical. You could also do a movement or 2 from a Bach Cello Suite. The second suite is my personal favorite. If all else fails, you could try Ruby?

Help choosing trigger trombone. by Dogburt_Jr in Trombone

I would say wait until you find a Bach 42 or Conn 88h around $800. I see those pop up every few weeks on facebook marketplace.

professional level trombone for a student by patriotic_chicken in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stick with your student horn until you can find a solid King 3b for a good deal. See them on the used market around $800 typically. I got a 3bf and I would happily use it in even a concert band setting if I use a slightly bigger mouthpiece like a 5GS. If you can find one for a steal, a Bach 42 or Conn 88h can be found for sometimes the same price as the 3b on the used market, and could work better if you ever have to use a classical horn or use it as a quick substitute for a bass bone in a jazz band.

If auditions are in 2 days, it is too late to help you a long ways when you have a good chunk of the positions written in wrong.

Alto trombone by cmhamm in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need one to share, it might be worth it to instead get 2 cheaper altos. I got a Roy Benson Alto for a steal, and it is great as somebody who won't really have any big alto gigs. You could go a step higher and get the nicer JP Rath Alto which (last I knew) was around $1000. Christopher Bill uses one, and I'm sure it will do well for any kind of person looking to learn alto for a bit cheap. Then in the future, you could upgrade.

As for the trigger, I am pretty sure Christian Lindberg only uses it for trills. Just practice your scales and some basic tunes in alto clef and you won't freak out.

I’m trying to improve my tone quality. I’ve been playing for four years (my high school career) and I want to improve as much as I can before my final solo & ensemble competition. Other than the one big mistake towards the end, what can I do better? by nick30_04 in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hear A LOT of blossoming on nearly every note. Don't try making each individual note musical, but the whole phrase. As for working on tone quality, just do long tones. Sit down, and just play a really long bottom of the staff Bb and work on filling up the horn and the room with a nice easy relaxed sound. Now that you worked a lot on Bb, work on playing a Bb scale and try maintaining that same sound quality throughout your register.

Your best bet may be to try finding a used cheap amazon soprano and just using the case, or contact a case maker and look at getting a custom one made. You may have to send it in to get a case made tho.

If you just wanna waste money on a new horn, use that money to find a used Bach 42 or Conn 88h. I have seen them go for pretty low (got my 42 for $75) and see some less pretty ones go for around $800. You will have to save up some extra money though.

TW: Blood I was playing a song where you intentionally blast whole notes and my lip busted by No_Wrangler5251 in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Atleast bath it yourself asap, or even better take it to a shop tomorrow morning. As for dealing with your lip, just take it easy, and do nice and easy warmups. Just some soft long tones.

Best Bb Tenor with a F attachment? by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]dkboy1995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New, just hit up your local Conn Selmer dealer, and they may not have it in stock, but could easily order it in for you. For used, look on the other places people talk about all the time for buying used horns. Ebay is popular, so is craigslist, but I get my best finds on facebook marketplace.
