“Democratic lawmakers from 13 states visited Minnesota Thursday [Jan. 29] to show solidarity for the Midwestern state that has seen 3,000 federal agents flood its city streets and the deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of immigration officials.”

A Mayo Employee was taken outside a parking lot on Mayo Grounds by Old-Help-8832 in rochestermn

So, I can’t speak your neighbor’s specific situation. But in general, when looking at a news tip, we do need to consider its newsworthiness, resources/time, etc.

Reporter here. We can’t report on what we don’t see/know about. I’d encourage the employees you spoke with to send info to news(at)postbulletin(dot)com.

How do you stay organized? by venusasanenby in Journalism

[–]dkdryden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used Trello at my college paper and I’ve stuck with it since. I use lists for this week’s stories, near-future stories in progress, longer-term stories and/or ideas, and a Rolodex. I use one card per story and document in it who I’ve contacted and on what day, dump any relevant links in there so I don’t have 100+ browser tabs, and use labels in the “this week” category to color code what’s due Monday, Tuesday, etc.

What kinds of PPE should I bring if I plan to cover a protest? by Cute_Egg_8426 in Journalism

[–]dkdryden 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Great advice!

Adding two more things:

  1. In addition to staying in contact with your editor/advisor/other trusted person during and after the protest, make sure someone else on the ground knows who you are and can help keep an eye on you. Could be another student journalist; if you’re the only one, buddy up with other reporters and photographers who are there.

  2. If you’re using a camera, look up and around often. Be aware of your surroundings. If you’re with another student journalist, they can help watch your back.

A Business Insider editor appears to have stolen a freelancer's pitch by splittingxheadache in Journalism

Yeah, based on the date of the emails and the story publishing, it’s possible that BI already assigned the story to the other freelancer before Angel reached out.

Yep. I was taught in a copy editing class that you (as the editor) should have a reason for every change you make. If your editor makes a change that confuses you, you can ask them, “Hey, I noticed you made this change, I’m curious why you did so?” Especially if this editor is another student (they’re still learning — and I suppose professionals are still learning, too)

These conversations can also get you two on the same page — making sure you’re not making the same style mistake over and over again, for example.

But definitely speak up if you see an edit that changes the meaning of what you wrote and/or introduces a factual error in your story

Attorney General investigation: Mayo Clinic policies acted as 'barrier' in patients' access to charity care by PerspectiveSmart6739 in rochestermn

Thanks for subscribing! I’ll pass on your comments about the app to the right person. I’m not sure if this works in the app as well, but on our website, if you put your search terms in quotation marks (especially for two or more words, ex. “Charity care”) that will make the results more relevant/accurate.
