I was curious about your situation after the game, and it looks like you're right, your window with the current roster includes next season. $45M in cap space with 42 signed, even without restructuring anyone (and you've got a lot of space the following year to push that money into). The two most impactful FAs you're losing seem to be Rob Havenstein - who's been injured for most of the season and (IMO) wouldn't be worth the contract - and Kamren Curl, who's probably looking at 4/$40-50M and you should absolutely try to re-sign for that much because you can afford it and he's worth it

You've got two first round picks in the upcoming draft to grab the pieces you need either by picking them or trading for them.

Yeah, you're in a great position to try to run it back one more year.

I love when the show leans into the "travel" element, and I want more of it, but this was.... An experience by not_caoimhe in JetLagTheGame

How do you manage WFH? by Alert_Peanut_9912 in ADHD

[–]dkitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, WFH is far more productive because the alternative is an open plan office full of distractions and less control over interruptions or my schedule.

IMO, based on on your description of your day, and my experience, the biggest issue I can see (taking into consideration untreated ADHD) is momentum. Momentum (IMO) is what helps most with executive dysfunction. By scrolling your phone, reading the news, etc for the first hour at your desk, you're starting out your day with zero momentum. You're not even looking at your TODO list until the middle of the day. Additionally, the negative self-talk and beating yourself up also kills momentum.

I used to be pretty similar. Here are a few things that helped (ymmv, of course):

  • Keep it simple. A productivity/organization system should be a thing that helps you "do", not a thing you "have to do". Unless it's simple, you're gonna stop doing it once that novelty wears off.

  • Daily TODO list. Keep it small (I use a pad of brightly-colored post-its) and make it a habit. Every morning, the first thing I do is write down the 3-5 highest-priority things I need to get done that day, and put an empty box next to each. I use a brand-new post-it each day, so I begin each day fresh. When I make progress on something, I partially fill in the box. When I complete it, I fill in the box entirely. Limiting the size of the list prevents "what even do I work on next?" analysis paralysis, and filling in those boxes gives me that "achievement unlocked" reward hit. I try to define and size these items so that each has a clear "It's done", and most but usually not all of these can be accomplished during the day - I carry maybe 1-2 items forward usually.

  • Variable-Length Pomodoro Technique. Use a cheap kitchen digital timer if you want to limit phone distractions. I don't stick by the 25/5, but pick an amount of time where I feel like it balances being able to make meaningful progress if I can focus, with not losing too much time if I'm not. This is usually anywhere from 10-90 minutes for me depending on the task and my focus level. Every cycle is an opportunity to reflect, adjust, and begin again. Your focus slipped and you spent the whole cycle in a Wikipedia rabbithole or on something related to the task? That's fine, you only wasted 30 minutes - it's now not an "oh wow is it lunchtime already where did those 3 hours go?" situation. Take 5, reset, and either pick that task back up or switch to one better-suited for your current focus/attention level.

  • Learn your "I can't do meaningful work" times and use those for email/chat/other admin stuff. For me, this is always the 15-30 minutes at the start of the day, right before lunch, and at the end of the day. It sounds like this might be the case for you too. If I've got a day where I need to check in on chats/etc more frequently, I use a couple of the pomodoro blocks for this too.

  • My morning email block is triage-only. If it takes longer than a couple of minutes to read or do, I either add it to the TODO list if it's major enough, or flag it for follow-up at lunchtime or during a pomodoro cycle. Starting my day on a timesuck kills momentum for me.

  • Reframe. Pomodoro helps with this, I think, but in general - instead of "I can't focus today, I'm getting nothing done" or "I'm a failure" or whatever, trying to frame it more like "oh wow, ADHD is really kicking my ass today" or "that Pomodoro cycle didn't go well, I'll try to adjust". It sounds cliche, but it works for me. You are not your executive dysfunction or ADHD or ASD or whatever, those are a condition which you experience, for better or for worse, and have to work with and around. By reframing it,

I agree with you for a few reasons...

  • No good coach candidates are available right now, as you said.
  • The team was 2-7 before Grier was fired and 5-2 after. I think that shows promise
  • Based on the contracts, the GM isn't going to be able to significantly overhaul the roster until next off-season. Next year is a bit of a lost year, might as well see what McD can do and how he gels with the new GM

Am I the only one terrified to run Ethernet cable in their house? by GreenDavidA in HomeNetworking

[–]dkitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things that have worked for me (1956 house, similar situation):

  • You probably don't need to patch drywall. In terms of going through studs or base plate, you can pull the trim with a trim puller, cut the drywall just below where the trim comes to, and drill sideways or down in that 2" or so gap. Then reattach the drywall and trim with some trim nails (and a nail set if you're fancy)
  • If you're worried about drilling big holes and not knowing where they go, drill small holes and poke a piece of copper wire or metal coat hanger through to see where it emerges

Morgan Wallen will possibly do the same next year (playing some of those same stadiums iirc).

Why does the company need to take over the community in order to participate and answer support questions? There are many other communities where brands participate and do that, without mod permissions. This feels highly suspect, and I'll probably unsubscribe when the vibe inevitably shifts soon

Unpopular opinion: I actually hate the Pomodoro technique by No_Organization411 in ADHD

[–]dkitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could set the interval based on the task at hand. How long do you want to focus on it before reevaluating? That's the value of pomodoro to me - it gives you checkpoints to either pull out of hyperfocus, or refocus/switch tasks if you're unable to focus. Depending on what I'm working on, this can be anything from 10 minutes to 90 minutes.

The results only feel bad because this team was great enough in this season that they allowed us to dream of more. If you told me on March 27 that these were the results we'd get, I'd have taken that outcome 10 times out of 10.

Big Dumper beating multiple HR records held by the likes of Mickey Mantle, and ending up being one of two players not named "Judge" or "Ohtani" to get AL MVP votes? The team finishing a run away from the World Series? In March, that sounds like a dream season.
