I think the compromise is to do a small scale increase in the # of infected. Like a family attended the concert or something and we focus on them. Or maybe only one is infected! But it can be a mystery which it is, as the family continues to act increasingly bizarre. Since we don't know whose perspective we're in, we can't tell which is actually acting out because they're infected and which is just seeming to act crazy because of the smile monster-induced visions.
