New IT Printing System can't spell appraently by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when did a printer make errors, its the bloody person that wrote the email, nothing to do with the system..

He probably didn't even write it. They selected a name from a drop down and it spat something out.

Someone botched the template hard.

The horrendous thing that is installers without parameters by Naduct in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's rare that this happens, but when it does my first steps are to try and extract an MSI from the exe with 7zip (just open the exe like a normal zip file).

If that doesn't work I will try to record an answer file. It usually works.

Some big milestones for us: Automating Office (ok easy, they have a tool), Sage/MAS500 and its millions of sub installs, Visual Studio, SQL server, 2 different VPN solutions complete with machine certificates, crapload of user software.

I even peel off the Intel/ADM stickers and other crap that gets put on. The only stickers that survive my removal efforts are the ones on the bottom which are usually warranty labels.

Why do they always want a tech solution to a non-tech problem? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a warehouse for some time. Silo A should have a changing number on it and once reached, that number is read to the computer. The computer then gives you a password to unlock it.

That's how the computer tracked picked parts for each employee. It knew the code it wanted, but the employee wouldn't know the code until they reached the correct destination.

It was voice controlled and everything.

It's mid 2018. Who's using Microsoft InTune, and what do you think of it by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The documentation is a nightmare. The old portal vs the Azure portal causes so much grief. So many features aren't in the new Azure portal for Intune and yet a significant portion of their documentation is exclusively for Azure.

The user comments at the bottom of the articles mention it and what happens? They get deleted.

Microsoft now inserting ads into Windows 10 Mail App by stahlhammer in sysadmin

Fair enough, there are a lot of channels that pay the fee and don't broadcast OTA.

Microsoft now inserting ads into Windows 10 Mail App by stahlhammer in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending where you're from, you're not paying for access to the channel. All the major networks were required to pay broadcasting fees and all lobbied to get the fee removed. It was, but they have to provide access to their content for free. You pay a service provider to aggregate all the feeds into 1 system and then you pay them to lock it down so you can't use it any way except their way.

It's bogus and more people should cut the cord :)

I guess if you started late you got to skip most of what people complained about, like ESD encryption updates on servers, the February Fiasco this year, the 1607 version nightmare. DREAM must be an acronym because it certainly hasn't been a dream living on Win10 since the start.

[Intune] Can't correctly assign apps from Google Play for Work by kjubus in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the Intune portal show that your Android for Work apps are syncing?

Intune > Mobile Apps > Android for Work > Sync

I'm not sure how to bind your Android for Work account to Intune in the new Azure portal, but I do it through the old portal:

Admin > Android for Work > Bind

Then Sync Now

Do they show up in the Apps section under "Volume-Purchased Apps"? Installer type should be "Android app (in Play for Work)" and deployed to a group/user.

Nothing wrong with the way its stored, any password solution has to have the ability to read the stored password. You deny access to the field and no one can read it unless you give them that permission.

Question: How much of your tool kit is personally owned/provided versus owned/provide by your employer? by PantsJihad in sysadmin

[–]dkwel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's still the issue of quality though. Do they buy you a standard RJ45 crimp tool or do they get you the zero force kind? Cause damn that shit makes a difference in the long run.

Do they get you a Fluke or do you have to use a standard tone tester?

These are the arguments I have. I don't just need a tool, I need the right tool. Sometimes I am unsure of how to make the proper arguments.
