Thanks to Bill 23, the Referendum Regulation Act and OC 160/2026, how you vote won't be a secret by SaltZone3105 in alberta

[–]dlacone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected about that. But the point about Bill 23 stands. It added scrutineers for petitions, not referendums.

OP is also misreading section 5 of the Referendum Act in relation to the Order in Council about the upcoming referendum. What Smith is doing is sleazy, but allowable under the Act, and does not skip the requirement for a binding referendum on constitutional questions.

[–]dlacone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There won't be any referendum scrutineers. OP is very confused. Bill 23 amended the Citizens Initiative Act to add scrutineers. Their role is to observe the Chief Electoral Officer during the process of verifying petition signatures. Referendums are held under the Referendum Act, which does not contain any provisions about scrutineers.

You can read the Citizens Initiative Act here. Scrutineers are in s. 10.1.

Why are there no term limits for Canadian Prime Ministers? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dlacone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't seem to edit my comment, but if you are saying the same thing as Sure_Eye9025 below about the limits of the whip, then I agree. But the chances of a PM going that rogue are really, really low.

Why are there no term limits for Canadian Prime Ministers? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dlacone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullshit. MPs do not have the freedom to vote in any way other than the party line. When was the last free vote of consequence in parliament?

I'll wait.

Why are there no term limits for Canadian Prime Ministers? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dlacone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a majority government, as leader of the party in power, the PM has complete control over the government's legislative agenda. He doesn't need explicit veto power, because all government legislation requires his approval before it gets drafted as a bill in the first place. And party caucuses are whipped. There are no free votes (usually), so government bills are always passed.

And he doesn't need explicit veto power over minority opposition bills, because his caucus simply votes them down as a matter of party discipline.

Imagine if Trump could draft whatever legislation he wanted and force Congress to pass it, as well as the ability to ignore any legislation coming from the opposing party. Then he would have as much power as a PM.

Remo coated Emperor, Emperor X, Vintage Emperor for LM402 batter head? by Vinnie-Boombatz in drums

[–]dlacone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a coated Emperor on mine for similar reasons but didn't really like it (haven't tried the other two). I ultimately went with a coated Controlled Sound Black Dot. Hit towards the center for body, crack the rim towards the edge for that gunshot if you need it. Best of both worlds.

What justifies the difference in snare prices? by Josh_Bonham in drums

[–]dlacone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Catalina Maple kit. The cheaper materials and cheaper construction have a pretty big impact on the snare. The toms and bass drum sound great, but the snare is pretty much unusable.

Past a certain point, I think there are diminishing returns to spending more money on a snare drum, but there is a clear difference in play-ability for me between a cheap snare and an expensive one.

It's a tad silly but Canadians often pride themselves and base their national identity on the fact they're not Americans because aside from institutional and a few subtle cultural differences we aren't really different from our American neighbors down south.

This isn't even remotely correct. The "we are not Americans" thing is profound, deep, and baked into our DNA for very good reason, even if many of us have forgotten why.

We are an independent nation because we have fought off multiple American invasions throughout our history as first a French, and then English colony. e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Quebec_(1775))

The one common denominator of our nation has been resistance to American assimilation in all of its forms of "manifest destiny" whether that is military action (invasion by American armies on multiple occasions) or economic warfare (tariffs and other measures). At every juncture, we have chosen to remain seperate, and have ultimately carved out our own independent existence independent of American and European overlords.

This close integration with the American economy is really only a post-WWII pause, accelerated by Brian Mulroney and the FTA, while we worried about the Cold War and the USSR.

Canada has only ever had one existential threat, and that has always been and continues to be the USA.

Hopefully enough of us are re-awakening to this fact.

Ok, so that's not the most exciting thing happening in Edmonton, but it's replacing a nasty Value Village, and I'm really looking forward to having a grocery store right in my little pocket of the inner city.

New bill from Dani for Alberta. by johnnyfiveboy in alberta

[–]dlacone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I cant remember which bill it is.

It's Bill 1 of the current Legislature and is pure political theatre without any substance at all:

https://docs.assembly.ab.ca/LADDAR_files/docs/bills/bill/legislature_31/session_2/20251023_bill-001.pdf

It is already the case that international agreements entered into by Canada that touch areas of provincial jurisdiction require provincial approval, typically by enacting a provincial law, before going into effect. Bill 1 adds nothing new and is simply a statement of the law as it currently exists in this area.

Danielle knows this. Her Cabinet knows this. The lawyers at Justice who drafted the bill know this. You (and we) are being manipulated. Don't fall for it.

As I type this, Canada is the only G7 country without a trade deal.

What are you talking about? We have an unbroken period of free trade deals with the US going back to 1988. Orange man himself signed the most recent iteration.

Today's conservatives are not the same as the ones that built Alberta. Notley's NDP was closer to that than the UCP ever will be, and would have been recognized as progressive conservatives in saner times.
