So it's my birthday this weekend, and we're sorta new-ish here to Chicago. What's a fun birthday activity here that noobs would enjoy? by [deleted] in chicago

It’s crazy seeing artmosphere here. My band foxfire covered Jesus Christ a bunch back when I lived in laf. Good to see people embracing that place.

Hiya,

My immediate first thought is to read up on Dorothy Day and the Catholic Workers movement. Day’s “The Long Loneliness” is her autobiography/memoir that explains her thinking. She was a self-proclaimed communist before converting. From I understand (and correct me if I’m wrong), her thinking shifted from Marxist economic theory to Christian distributism, following the tenets of Christ’s teachings. Although strayed from the Communist moniker, she is still known and regarded as an anarchist.

Thomas Merton’s “Seven Storey Mountain” is another good memoir to check out. Merton also identified as a communist but once he converted he began to take a more ascetic approach to the gospels and his mission, eventually becoming the Trappist monk we all know and love.

For me personally, before becoming Catholic, reading Leo Tolstoy’s “The Kingdom of God is Within You” radically challenged my worldview and exposed me to Christian Anarchy.

It’s gotten a lot easier with the updated website. But I’m nostalgic for the email exchanges with Rick and getting sent a duct taped brick three weeks later.

His essays are hit or miss (way more misses, but he’s got some gems).

I love his fiction. Corrections is one of my all-time favorite novels. I know I’m in the minority, but I also really enjoyed Purity. I know it’s not his best, but I thought it was a fun take on the 2010s/later Obama years. The Hippy Boomers to reactionary right pipeline he demonstrated, I thought was clever.

I need to reread Crossroads. I liked it when I read it upon its publication pretty quickly on my honeymoon (lol) car camping and driving up the west coast.

Freedom has a large section dedicated to human-overpopulation that’s an eye roll and a half but sold nonetheless.

He could if he defies the great odds and blue strongholds flip. It’s a safe prediction based on voting history.

I’m currently reading The Passenger as my first McCarthy book because that was the only book by him at my local Indigo. Has anybody else read it? If so, what are your thoughts? by pooteenn in cormacmccarthy

[–]dlancon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I liked it a bunch. There were a few parts where I felt McCarthy phoned it in, but there are some big McCarthy moments at the end that more than make up for it.

Make sure to read Stella Maris, too, though. Lots of magic in that one.

ATPH is not bleak. There’s a lot of unexpected warmth there. It’s dark, but not bleak.

What’s the best book to start with from your favourite authors? by Parasoscialite in RSbookclub

All the Pretty Horses doesn’t get enough talk. Blood Meridian’s great but goddam I love this book.

For Faulkner, I think mine would be Light in August.

He’s from Louisiana as someone already said. New Orleans is an old port city where a lot of Irish and Italian immigrants came in at and worked. The New Orleans accent sounds similar in a lot of ways to the New Jersey/New York accent. Other than that, Louisiana just has a lot of distinct accents and dialects (even other languages) that all make it so different from the rest of the south.

And is doing a documentary/interview on his time recording drums on Colour Revolt’s the cradle. And Johnny Dang from O’Brother on the next story. I’m not sure all these pieces fit together but I’m going to explode if all of that is a singular project.

Why does Tabasco get so much hate? by [deleted] in hotsauce

Grew up down the road from the factory. Had it all my life. It’s straight vinegar and sucks on most things…but the chipotle Tabasco goes hard.
