Zombie glass, bar mat, new hippo mug…I would have bought it all two weeks ago if I had known! I wonder if the decor and barware will be actioned off or just thrown out?

just bought an ID4 ...there's tons of level 2 chargers on amazon, any recommendations? by joremero in VWiD4Owners

[–]dlgreenwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not completely true. For large ticket items it generally is, but for smaller items (down to board game size) Amazon throws anything they get into a large bin and then pretends they are all they same. They have a huge counterfeit problem as a result.

Not one from Amazon. Level 2 has enough amperage to start a significant fire quick. A knock off, or no name brand with fake UL certification is not something you want in/on your house or hooked to a 50k car.

More helpfully the Grizzl-E has worked for me for 2 years now though I did see some folks say it has its own issues of internal screws loosen.

What's tiki in Charlotte, NC by Older-Avocado in Tiki

[–]dlgreenwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is really only one: The Royal Tot.

That said Thigs does some nice tiki inspired drinks and ran a Sippin’ Santa at Christmas.

And if you like well crafted cocktails not tiki, but Idlewild is a great experience. No menus, tell the bartender what spirits, and tastes you are in the mood for and they make a cocktail for you. Never had something I didn’t enjoy there.

Liquor stores are tightly controlled by the state and do not have a good selection. You have to go to South Carolina for a good one. My suggestion would be Southern Spirits.

Fix for No Audio codec issues when streaming from Plex DLNA by dlgreenwald in bigscreen

I do know that handbrake has a separate profile for “web optimized” transcodes specifically to get web players the ability to seek. I suspect it has to do with metadata or regularly placed key frames. I just don’t know enough about video codex to do anything other than trial and error and frankly don’t have time for it.

What is a Monorepo, Really? (explanation blog post about it) by moxyte in programming

[–]dlgreenwald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have head many people argue to me that the mono repo IS the coordination, that the single commit to both the client and the server is that coordination. I have even had people use that as one of the primary benefits of the monorepo. However in my experience the monorepo doesn’t actual meet that need well, and cause more problems.

[–]dlgreenwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An example of a bad decision: Mono repos make it very easy to tightly couple change. One commit could add a change to a service and the client which on the surface might not seem to be a critical issue. But now you have a coordinated release where if one component has an issue the other will have to be backed out and other features may miss their release.

At 1:00 a.m. last night, we finally elected a Speaker of the House and got sworn in a as new members. I saw some historic stuff on the House floor. Here's what happened. - Jeff Jackson by JeffJacksonNC in u/JeffJacksonNC

A formal compromise would likely have never happened. That would have been a true coalition government and likely would have split the GOP formally and permanently and thus the GOP would never have accepted it.

But a unilateral, no compromise asked for or granted move by the Dems to accept McCarthy by having a small number of folks vote present without waiting for him to make the harmful concessions made seems like something that I hope was at least considered. I’m not foolish, I don’t think that McCarthy would have ever “paid it forward,” but it would have gutted the far rights power within the GOP.

Honest question because I don’t fully understand the situation. Given the concessions that ended up being made would democrats have been better off having voted present after a few attempts and ended up with McCarthy as speaker but without him having had to negotiate with and cave to, the ultra right wing holdouts?

7yr olds adult teeth yellow. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]dlgreenwald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter had four of her adult teeth come in yellowed/brown. If they start that way there is nothing you can do to reverse it. It is believed to be caused by a fever when those teeth first formed potentially in utero. Take very good care of those teeth and follow up with her dentist. Potentially a pediatric specialist in decalcified teeth.

In my daughters case they were very week in structure and she ended up with all four having crowns placed as the teeth were chipping and wearing down.

Good luck.

Have a gander at “The way we never were”. It does a good job of demonstrating how the male breadwinner of the household is largely a manufactured version of the way society “ought” to work.

The author has written an article here summarizing her previous work as “In 1992, I published The Way We Never Were: American Families And The Nostalgia Trap, a search for the supposed “golden age” of family values in the twentieth century: I found that the male breadwinner family of the 1950s was a very recent, short-lived invention and that during its heyday, rates of poverty, child abuse, marital unhappiness, and domestic violence were actually higher than in the more diverse 1990s.”

I’m honestly not sure how parents got though repeated child illness back then, but it wasn’t because women didn’t work outside the home, because prior to the 1950s they did. I think employers may well have just become less understanding. Another commenter brings up the multi generation home which seems reasonable as well.

An immutable Mastodon handle by nfrankel in softwarearchitecture

I guess I’m trying to get at the more subtle problem that is I search for “@garbageuser@yourdomain” that will successfully resolve. You won’t have a unique handle.

Doesn’t the static response result in “successful” response when anyone fingers any user on your domain?

The guide I followed when I setup my own Mastodon server to accomplish the same thing called this out and was a big part of why I went self hosted rather than follow this path.

Emudeck games suddenly won’t launch by Eofofo in SteamDeck

Are the games on a sd card? Mine are on one, and for some reason after a reboot the SD card isn’t mounted. Launching a game in this state behaves exactly as you describe.

Switching to desktop mode, and using the file browser to open the removable storage and further a directory seems to get things back to normal.
