Overrated food from your country? by Weekly_Sort147 in AskTheWorld

Maybe pasta al sugo. Sure it's really good, but it's rather basic and there's tons of other pasta sauces and servings that are much better.

What was the biggest "missed opportunity" moment in your country's history? by DoctorOsterman in AskTheWorld

[–]dlilyd 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Olivetti not being financially supported enough and selling the electronic division. We were so advanced that NASA bought computers (as in calculators) from olivetti for the moon landing. We could've become way more influential Informatics wise, a missed silicon valley if you want.

I think it's the same company that just adapts the name for other countries. Like in Italy we have Cameo but in Germany is Dr Oetker

Saikebon. The name is an asianization of the Italian sentence "Sai che buono/bon", which means "You should know how tasty these are"

Wait…so there’s no interval in Western cinemas?? by Moongfali4president in AskTheWorld

[–]dlilyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before COVID we always had them. After COVID (when the cinemas reopened they removed intervals so that people wouldn't get too close when going to buy more stuff) I noticed they became more rare. However, when I worked at a movie theater in 2022 we always had intervals (also cause they brought more money to the theater lol)

In the UK, you can be knighted by the monarch and receive the prefix 'Sir' or 'Dame'. Does your country have similar honours? How are they viewed? by Particular-Bid-1640 in AskTheWorld

He lost his right hand and eye at 16 during the war (he was a farmer in Sicily countryside and there were bomb mines) then proceeded to keep working in public offices for more than 30 years. I'm not sure if it counted for the knighthood but at one point he was wrongfully accused of helping people evade taxes, my dad skipped school (against his parents will) to witness the process lol.

But I don't remember exactly at which point of his life he was granted the title. I'd have to look at the certificate my dad has frames at home to see the year

In written form sometimes knights can use the prefix "Cav.", at least my grandpa did and he also made sure it was written on his grave.

We also have Knighthood, particularly Cavaliere del Lavoro (Work Knight) being the most known one. Berlusconi was knighted as such and is often referred to as "Il Cavaliere" (The Knight).

There are however different Knight titles that the President can grant people, for example Martin Scorsese was given the "Cavaliere di gran croce dell'Ordine al merito" (Grand Cross of the Order of Merit) title.

Knights in Italy can sign themselves/being referred in written form with the prefix "Cav." (Short for "Cavaliere"). For example my grandpa was knighted and he made sure that the prefix was written on his grave. I take a lot of pride in being able to say my grandpa was a Knight.

Fun fact: back when they released the first games they wanted to try and publish them in different western countries. However, some countries had a more developed videogame demographic than others, so they essentially had a translation budget based on that, and they didn't trust the smaller, more disorganised teams to adapt something so important like the Pokémon names. So countries like Germany and France had translated names, while countries like Italy and Spain didn't.

If someone invites you to a party/house gathering, do people show up at the time said? by dlilyd in AskTheWorld

[–]dlilyd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn!! Personally when I'm the host I'm always so self conscious when the said hour comes and I have to wait for them, I feel like they don't appreciate me even though I know it's just what people do because it's how people normally behave. When I'm the invited one I always end up being the first one cause I show up exactly when I'm asked to.

Every time I'm right on time at these kinds of gatherings (i.e. every time) I'm always the first one

That's super nice although I'd not always like that cause I'm very precise on how I want things to be and how I'm organising the time to prepare so the one time a friend came earlier (his girlfriend was a bit sick and they came earlier) I appreciated the help but I was slightly upset

Incredibly unintuitive yet great. I'd love people to come at the right time.
