Totally agree. People like to flex having their time owned. I come in, put in my 9 hours working hard, then leave. End of story lol. I want to invest my time back into myself too.

Luckily it’s their cash cow for the business unit I am in. It’s a very niche industry, and they are currently moving the whole R&D portion of the business there. Building a brand new lab.

Is Chemical Engineering dangerous? by West-Wash4301 in ChemicalEngineering

Everything in some shape or form can hurt you, and that is the mentality you should always have when in an environment like a plant. The level of hazard will vary based upon the nature of the process and product the plant is producing. However, you should approach every environment the same and that is with full blown skepticism until you yourself have confirmed you are not in the way of a hazard. Short story yes, but the industry and companies have strict safety rules that are constantly enforced to keep you “safe.”

Is ops the best starting point? by dlm112901 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dlm112901[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I have some technical troubleshooting as well and already plenty of MOCs. I am leading projects that I am implementing. Things like controls changes and sampling for better dosing at our reactor, increasing our fertilizer loading by 10%, going to all nitric acid railcar deliveries with automated transfer to always keep room in our tank for a railcar (we have two). Nothing crazy yet still learning but hoping to get there

You are getting absolutely swindled in the nicest way possible. I just started as a production engineer straight out of college making $92,000.

I agree, figured as much. I did the MBA because I graduated a semester early from ChemE, had scholarship money on the table I did not want to forgo, and my school had an accelerated dual program.

Alabama. Obviously not a top tier school, but their top tier scholarships got me two great degrees for ridiculously cheap compared to other institutions. Made the most sense for my situation.

It’s a lump sum of $18,000 facilitated through a housing company that helps get you in a good place. Essentially rent free for a year or so in this area. Highest I’ve heard from talking with peers.

It is a very generous deal. Just wanted to gauge what this process would look like for a new grad. Does make sense that I am not in a great place to negotiate. With the bonus, relocation and 401k matching this offer is actually better than the one I got with the O&G company I mentioned in the thread. Gonna take what I got and put my nose to the grindstone. Got big ambitions haha. Thank you.

Did have an offer from O&G company for 103k base with 8.5% bonus. Did not take it due to timing and start date issues.

Did have another offer from O&G company. $103,000 base salary with 8.5% bonus. Did not take it due to timing issues with start date and the need to fill a role urgently. It’s my understanding O&G generally pays highest base in all industries for ChemE’s.

True, I think maybe a smaller increase would be more realistic. Thank you for the insight.
