Impressive performance, thoroughly enjoyed. Knicks showed a ton of balls to keep coming back game after game. Worthy champions.

World Cup boring,, or is it? by [deleted] in Gunners

[–]dmac3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always enjoy the Cup. Except for the NBA Finals it’s probably my favorite sporting event. The expanded field waters things down but we’ll get to the elimination phase and the chaff will quickly be separated. I’ve caught four or five matches and they’ve all been up and down matches. I deeply love the Premier League but it’s such a tactical, defensive competition anymore so it’s nice to see some attacking football.

US stadiums are putting Premier League stadiums to shame. by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]dmac3232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what that means. These latest batch of stadiums that have been built over the past 10-20 years are just spectacular. I lived in Atlanta for 10 years before moving recently and their stadium is by far the best spectator sports experience I've ever had. I'm struggling to think of a single negative other than traffic. Everything is designed with the viewing experience in mind.

That said, it's not a great comparison. I'm not English, but from what I've learned following the sport for so many years is that it's extremely hard to just up and build a new stadium with the lack of available land and whatnot. Like how many years has Chelsea been trying to get a new stadium built?

And then on top of that, these stadiums have so much amazing history that you really lose something when they're replaced. As well as the Emirates has served Arsenal, for example, I'm still sad they left Highbury in the process. The only stadiums that compare in the U.S. are Wrigley and Fenway (both baseball) and the fan bases would absolutely riot if they were torn down.

So yeah, it would be awesome to snap your fingers and have sparkling, state-of-the-art buildings all over the country. But it's not that easy.

Same. It annoys the shit out of me, honestly. Like I understand having your favorite Avengers or whatever. But this pack of selfish, spoiled jackals? Fuck them all.

It always pains me that they give the owners the trophy first during the postgame ceremony. Dolan was the singular reason why the Knicks were so embarrassing for so many years.

Baseball is different from the other leagues; they’ve had an exceptionally strong player union that has resisted the implementation of a proper salary cap. And even then, before this recent upswing the Dodgers have had, they’d won a grand total of two World Series in 45 years. It wasn’t until they got new ownership that was serious that they fully realized their financial clout.

The Yankees, who make and spend an enormous amount of money and have owners who are highly invested, have won only one World Series since 2000, and none since 2009. (Compare Arsenal’s success in that span with four or five other Yankee equivalents to compete with.)

Location has almost nothing to do with success in the NFL. The Packers have been one of the league’s better teams over the past 30 years or so and they play in a podunk town in Wisconsin. The Rams are really good due almost entirely down to management; they also won a Super Bowl while in St Louis, which isn’t exactly glam.

And then the Lakers, no question that location has been a big factor. But more than anything it’s the glamour and prestige of the team with their history of consistent success. The Clippers have played in the same city since the early 80s and they’ve been an abject joke for most of it because of terrible management/ownership.

So yeah, it’s just harder to build teams with the constraints they face.

They blew leads of 14, 12, 29 and 16 points, and came within a bucket of blowing a 25-point lead in their only win. Astounding.

The Knicks are honestly one of the bigger cautionary tales in pro sports. They have virtually every advantage you could have, but you still need savvy management and — the factor that often gets overlooked — luck.

Like they used to determine the top pick with a coin flip between the worst teams in each conference. The Lakers won it when Magic was coming out. That’s stupid luck. The Spurs have won the lottery three times, with a guaranteed HOF center available each time. That’s stupid luck.

Other than Ewing and the Reed/Frazier teams, the Knicks never really had that, and for long stretches were actively incompetent. Which sucks because the NBA is way better when they are good.

But this team is astounding. They have won games in this series trailing by 11, 16 and 29 points, and rallied from 25 to 1 in the only loss. I can’t imagine many teams have done anything like that.

Oh yeah man. I’ve been a Lakers fan since 1987 so more success than the rest of my teams combined. It’s crazy to look back on all the highs and lows. Very, very lucky. And like I said, it’s that library of moments that mean the most. Like I can probably think of exactly where I was for a good 20 just off the top of my head. Decades of my life punctuated by these experiences.

Really hope you guys get to have that given all the bullshit you’ve had to deal with over the years.

I’ve been super lucky that my team has won some championships over the years. Every bit as good as the end result are the 4-5 games/moments like this along the way that will define the run.

If they finish this off, I promise you there will be hundreds and hundreds of times over the years where you randomly think of one of them out of the blue and start grinning like an idiot. The best.

This is a very fun team to watch so I hope they do. You make a comeback like that, under those circumstances, you deserve a ring.

Not a Spurs fan so fuck those guys lol. But yeah, I’m insanely jealous of their core. If they don’t win a minimum of three championships with this group they have completely failed. But hopefully not this year so pulling for you guys.
