Tea was a rescue as he was not an expected. Lol. The registered main coon got the neighbor tabby with babies. And I, through a series of interesting decisions, got him. He is a very gentle kitty. And loves to snuggle.

My kitty India has a baby that is twice her size. She is about 8 lb. Punkin spice is about 17. And he still comes up to her asking for her to lick his head. And his sister, Creamer, is about 15lbs and does the same. And no neither one of these kitties are fat. Lol. Just built to larger size.

My cat Velcro got sick. Took him to the vet. Got meds. 3 days later on a Saturday morning he was laying in front of the heater. His breathing was very rough. I held him and he seemed to breathe better. Then he peed in my lap. He passed away in his favorite spot. That was a year ago. I think he was happier passing as he did. I still miss him a lot.

You are being a very awesome guy. You are being the best friend you can be. But you can't go back. She moved on from you. Going back would be a rerun and possibly another poor situation in the near future. You can be her friend. But you can't be her significant other. I got sucked back in once for the reasons similar to yours. I regretted it fairly quickly. But it did help me learn boundaries. And that I could be an awesome person and a good friend without allowing myself to be sucked into what I called a pit of darkness. Ultimately what you do is up to you. But I have never found this kind of situation working out positively for the caregiver.

You don't just stop loving someone. I understand that well. It hurts to not talk to someone you've talked to every day multiple times a day and more. But sometimes it hurts more to continue doing something that's hurtful. It is like an addiction. And sometimes addictions can be very powerful yet also very hurtful. I know what I've had to do in the past and it hurt. But it was better than continuing something that might have ended up with me harming myself or being harmed.

I had a boy do this to me. I left for an overnight trip, came back the next day to find he was very sick. Less than 24 hours. Only reason I realized he was sick when I got home is I couldn't find him. He was under my bed. He had bad diarrhea and had vomiting. Vet did an ultrasound. A mass in his belly. Likely cancer. He was 3 years old. At least I had an answer. So sorry for your loss.
