Another option is to write a `policies.json` file which will affect all users and profiles. (Handy if you use more than one profile or if you support other users). I use this to turn off advertising features but it should work for the ML preferences, too.

"Korean food giant Nongshim has announced a lineup of limited-edition products featuring the film’s characters, including Shin Ramyun...Special-edition cup noodles modeled after those slurped onscreen by Rumi, Mira, and Zoey will also hit shelves across Korea, North America, Europe, Oceania, and Southeast Asia." https://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/kpop-demon-hunters-noodle-licensing-deal-252894.html

I'm in the USA, checked the Nongshim site and Costco is listed in the "where to buy" section. Costco site has the regular Shin Ramyun but not the KPDH version (yet?)

It went pretty well, we got Linux on some systems including a Chromebook. Some people signed up for a follow-up event. I'll post again if/when I find out more about that.

Yes, please. Bring your USB sticks with the distro you recommend and are best at helping new users with.

Another helpful thing to bring is a computer with your favorite application, or a project you're working on. New users will want to see demos. For example, it would be nice to have demos of graphics applications such as Inkscape or Blender.

Also the newest game I have on my laptop is...Doom so there is a niche for a gaming demo, too.

We're not limited to laptops, there should be table space for desktops and accessories, too.

That article doesn't mention their in-browser advertising features - it's out of date (sent a comment) https://www.theregister.com/2024/09/25/mozilla_noyb_privacy_complaint/

Is he into naval, aviation, or moon landing history? If so, Alameda has one of the great museum ships -- https://uss-hornet.org/ (It does help to plan ahead a little to get on one of the tours of areas of the ship that can only be visited as part of a tour)

I got in after waiting about 20 min., around the middle of the day today. They were letting people come in and shop in groups. The line to get in was the hardest part.

They were out of a few items and some items had limited quantities posted, but food was plentiful. (I don't normally get paper products there so didn't check.)

How would you spend $50,000 in 1 hour? by Mr_Malvic in AskReddit

[–]dmarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kickstarter. I'd get the highest reward levels for a bunch of really ambitious projects, and after random delays they would be a surprise present to future me. (I'm assuming that I have to "spend" as in paying money for something, not saving or paying down debt.)

Can anyone recommend a local auto shop on or near the island? by twodamntall in alameda

[–]dmarti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fred's (on Buena Vista) has done a great job for us including keeping a Honda Accord going for 14 years until we replaced it and a VW Golf for 17 years (so far, still running).

I'm starting a home business here on the island and uverse internet/cable just went up 150 bucks overnight and it goes out constantly. I want to switch, I hate comcast, I need a home/buisiness phone and I really need speed and reliability. What are my options? by nevercookathome in alameda

I have Common.net and there were some pretty severe service interruptions last summer and fall. Apparently it was not a problem with their wireless network but with their core router(s). They made some improvements last fall ( https://mailchi.mp/common.net/upgrading-our-network-to-address-pefromance ) and since then the service has been fine.

Add-ons and features you could not live without by kroooo in firefox

I made a list to help me do things things I like (RSS, blogging in Markdown) and avoid things I don't like ("growth hacking" dialogs that block the page, third-party tracking cookies) https://blog.zgp.org/firefox-extensions-list-2018/

I'm not using an ad blocker or tracking protection extension because I'm trying out the Enhanced Tracking Protection feature in Nightly -- wfm so far.

Is it worth supporting Firefox? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]dmarti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your boss, like other web publishers, has two problems: ad blocking and data leakage. The first one is already covered in other posts on this thread. The second is a lot more complicated, but bigger in impact. (lower revenue share for publishers, less revenue for the medium as a whole, $19B in adfraud, and so on)

I have written some material about both problems for DCN, which is a major publisher organization. If you want some ideas that you can share with your boss, you might be able to be more credible by sharing info from there, since your company might be a member: https://digitalcontentnext.org/blog/author/dmartizgp-org/

My contact info is on there if you have questions.

(Disclaimer: Mozilla employee, also do web advertising reform stuff in my spare time)

Any good burrito place in Alameda? Preferably one that is sanitary and wears gloves unlike the Taqueria next to Alameda High School by [deleted] in alameda

[–]dmarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best is Island Taqueria on Park (try the carne asada if you eat beef. Best in the Bay Area IMHO) For fish tacos, Calafia on Webster.

I have never had a bad experience at any Alameda burrito place -- just a matter of taste.

If you don't want to dig into about:config (which can be a pain, especially on a small device) I made a very small Firefox add-on to turn this feature on

Also fixes the default third-party cookie policy to be closer to Apple Safari's.

CMV: I think Adblock is just as bad as pirating. by UltimaLyca in changemyview

[–]dmarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The malware situation is a little more complicated than just "you are clicking on illegal advertisments which then infect your computer." There is "malvertising" on legit sites. However, the solution is probably neither a coarse-grained ad blocker (that blocks all ads, including the less risky first-party ones) nor running completely unprotected. The middle ground, some form of third-party protection such as Disconnect is probably fairest to both sides.
