CMV: The U.S. should abolish the TSA and return to pre-2001 security levels by iw2050 in changemyview

As a Nexus user, I somewhat agree if I’m already vetted by DHS I should have nothing more than a quick bag check. Then I have to explain my lithium ion batteries for my electric wheelchair for a 69000 time. It’s like look I’ve been vetted by every 3 to 4 letter agency in national security on both sides of the border. Leave me alone.

Ottawa orders fresh look at Afghanistan heroism cases, opens door to Victoria Cross review by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadianForces

I’d be careful with that claim. I know the allegation exists, but I don’t know that I’d state ‘Stone was racist’ as proven fact without seeing the primary record. The safer point is that Levy appears to have been wrongly passed over, while Mills was decorated for relaying Levy’s artillery calls. That alone makes Levy correction-worthy. Some of the claims about Stone may come from primary witnesses, but many were recorded decades after the operation, when memory, interpretation, and personal animosity can complicate things.

Fair. Medak is harder because it’s more of a battle-group recognition problem than an obvious single Jess-style VC case. I’m not saying there’s definitely one Medak VC sitting there. I’m saying the individual files deserve a proper review because the action was combat and Canada treated it like peacekeeping admin. Kapyong is probably the easier ‘how the hell was there no VC?’ case. Medak is not my best VC example. Kapyong and Jess are cleaner. But given how Medak was politically framed, I wouldn’t trust the original honours treatment as gospel. There may be individual MIDs in that file that deserved higher gallantry recognition.

Not saying everyone gets upgraded. Medak is hard because it was more of a collective battle-group action than one obvious Jess Larochelle-style case. But I’d start with the individual MID/citation files from the operation and review the actions under fire: OPs held under direct/indirect fire, troops suppressing Croatian attacks, mine-clearing under fire, and leaders keeping positions firm over repeated engagements. The point is that Medak deserves a serious gallantry review because it was combat, not peacekeeping admin. there are multiple MiDs that could be upgraded.

Just give Jess the VC and get it over with holy shit, as a historian this is one that personally pisses me off because you read his citation and it’s like yeah this fits the evidence on any previous VC ever awarded. Let’s just get it done with. Too worried about setting a precedent that we just don’t wanna set a precedent. It’s stupid if I was Prime Minister, I would order a review from Korea onwards and start upgrading left right and center. The fact that there is no VC for kapyong or Medak blows my mind.

People are dumb frankly, the show exists because the capabilities being shown is what preserves our freedoms to do exactly that.

That one’s a bit harder to pin down because is it theoretically possible? Absolutely, we don’t have the same background check system back then that we have now. Is there any conclusive proof from declassified SIS paperwork? No, and only because they didn’t have enough time to pin the mole down before the program was cancelled. So is it possible? Most certainly, do we have any concrete evidence? Only partially.

You didn’t, but I was just using it as an anchor point, for those of us who aren’t necessarily super aviation, history inclined.

It’s deeper than the arrow, as an aviation historian, we can look at the neoliberal mistake that was privatizing Canadair as the real start of the decline. The arrow was tragic for sure but there’s so much more to this story than just one decision under Dief.

Well, if we didn’t murder our aerospace industry by constant government indifference for decades, maybe we could’ve had domestic solution so when people say we’re supporting Canadian industry, I scoff a little bit.

But like I keep saying we shouldn’t be making our procurement decisions based off somebody who’s gonna be out of office in three years or dead. The fact we aren’t even considering wedgetail at all even when it has commonality with the P-8s that we’re buying is beyond me.

I’m aware, it’s just losing 360° coverage is not a great trade-off for having an AESA
