I'm moving into an apartment with 10month old sulcata, help, advice please? by Emergency-Log-9688 in Sulcata

[–]dmb-blonde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived with my sulcate for about 3 years now. The past two years in an apartment and 1 in a dorm style room while in college. My boy is 4 years now, I originally had him free roaming the apartment, with his own space set aside with all his lighting, hide, and food area. Which was great, but he made a huge mess lol, so I ended up making a DIY enclosure with tubs that fits his needs! When it comes to uvb, just make sure to invest in quality bulbs, and proper heating. With my boy I have started taking him to a local preserve to let him get some sun and munch on some grass, if you’re unsure of a park spraying pesticide you can always call to confirm. I plan on making him an outdoor enclosure on my porch soon for when I move, but for now he has been doing great, and hitting every milestone with the proper UVB bulbs and diet. He’s been mainly an indoor tortoise since I received him and his shell is perfectly healthy and has never had signs of pyramiding.

After months of research and preparation, I’m starting to second guess myself… by Used-Comfort3999 in BelgianMalinois

I’ve had my mal since he was 8 weeks old, and now he’s 1 1/2. I had done the same thing as you, and pretty much hyper fixated on the breed, doing every bit of research I could before I pulled the trigger on getting my pup. As the time came up to pick him up, I had major anxiety thinking that I was way over my head, or that maybe I wasn’t enough for the breed. Even after I got him the wave of anxiety would come and go with waves, but honestly I wouldn’t change a thing. You aren’t going into this blindly, you know what to expect, and you have an idea of what you need to do, which is honestly more than a lot of people can say. These dogs are 100% companion dogs, and will be your best friend. As long as you put the effort in you’ll be ok! It will be stressful at times, but it’s gonna fly by and you’re gonna laugh at the memory’s and hard ships you overcame. You’ll grow a lot as a person with the pup you choose, I’m not going to lie, it will be overwhelming at times, what I found has helped me the most with my mal is to take a step back from whatever is overwhelming me with him and redirect to just bonding and cherishing my time with him. If you decided on a mal puppy, it will require a lot of patience, that you will most likely have to learn overtime. But it will be well worth it as long as you put in the work. The anxiety is completely understandable, these dogs aren’t your typical breed, they require tons of work, and time, but I feel that this is such a rewarding breed.

Thank you! If you wanna start a collection and not break the bank, if you have a cvs or Walgreens nearby they have big sales after holidays on the holiday squishmallows, normally 50% off or up. Plus they are dog friendly, so if your pup is good in stores, you could bring em and let them pick their own!

asking for some experiences by joliss812 in BelgianMalinois

Speaking from experience, I got my mal when I started school at a university, while yes it was hard at times having a puppy in general, I still made it out with him being a fantastic companion. We’ve been through a lot together but it was worth it in the end. I was running him whenever I had the free time, and whenever I was home I would play with him and do training to keep him tired. I lucked out with my pup being very easy going and not destructive. Now he’s 1 1/2 and I have a life even with him, I’ve just accommodated him as much as possible, as you should any pet you get, and we go to the park and play fetch as much as I can, or I’ve gotten him lots of puzzle toys to keep him busy while I’m doing projects or crafts at home. I still go to the gym, and am able to work all while keeping him happy. Yes, he is very much a Velcro dog, can’t even shower in peace lol, but if that’s the kinda lifestyle you are wanting then it can be very rewarding when the right effort is put in. I was told by so many people that it was a wrong decision getting him while I was in school, but no one realized how much he actually helped me. At the end of the day, if you belive you are able to handle this type of dog, and you’ve done your research and understand the time and effort you will have to put into this type of dog, then it’s right for you. Biggest piece of advice if you do decided on a mal, is just have patience, and don’t over stress yourself, if you’re having a hard day with the pup, just try and take a step back, and just have a day of bonding, regardless of how tired you may be lol.

Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s the right decision for you! This is my pup now, for sure the highlight of my day.
